Chapter 2

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Tyler stood behind me with the old phone pressed against his chest.
Jennifer stared at him.
Not like a mother looking at her frightened son.
Like someone looking at a witness she had forgotten to silence.
“Give me that phone,” she said.
Tyler shook his head.
“Tyler.”
Her voice changed.
Soft.
Controlled.
The voice she used whenever company came over.
“You don’t understand what you recorded.”
“I understand,” he whispered.
Jennifer stepped toward him.
I moved between them.
“Don’t.”
She looked at my hands.
Then at the red marks already forming around her neck.
“You put your hands on me, Mark.”
The words hit me hard.
Because she was right.
No matter what I had seen.
No matter how angry I was.
I had crossed a line.
I looked at Lily in my arms.
She had gone completely still.
Her face was buried against my shoulder.
She had watched me lose control.
I hated that.
I hated myself for giving Jennifer something she could use.
But I couldn’t undo it.
“I shouldn’t have touched you,” I said.
Jennifer blinked.
She hadn’t expected that answer.
“But nobody is touching either of these kids again.”
“They’re my children too.”
“Lily is not your child.”
Jennifer’s mouth tightened.
“I have raised her for three years.”
“You made her eat from a dog tray.”
“She needed discipline.”
Tyler suddenly spoke.
“You made her sleep in the laundry room too.”
Jennifer spun toward him.
“Stop lying.”
“I have a video.”
The room went silent.
Tyler unlocked the phone.
His fingers were shaking so badly that he entered the passcode wrong twice.
I carried Lily to the dining table and sat down with her on my lap.
Max pushed against my leg.
Lily immediately reached for him.
Her little fingers disappeared into his fur.
“Can Max stay?” she whispered.
“Max stays.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Tyler pressed play.
The video was dark.
At first I could barely understand what I was seeing.
Then I recognized the laundry room.
The phone had apparently been positioned behind a basket in the hallway.
Jennifer stood in the doorway.
Lily was inside.
She was wearing pajamas.
Her hair was wet.
She was crying.
“I want Daddy.”
Jennifer folded her arms.
“Daddy isn’t here.”
“I want my bed.”
“You wet your bed.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re always sorry.”
“I won’t do it again.”
“You said that last time.”
Jennifer switched off the laundry room light.
The screen went almost black.
Lily screamed.
Not loudly.
One sharp, terrified sound.
Then she immediately covered her own mouth.
I felt my daughter stiffen against me as she heard her own voice from the recording.
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t watch another second.
“How long?” I asked.
Jennifer rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please.”
“How long did you leave her in there?”
“She wasn’t locked in all night.”
Tyler looked at me.
“Until morning.”
I stared at him.
He swallowed.
“I tried to open it.”
Jennifer snapped, “You were supposed to stay in your room.”
Tyler flinched.
That one movement told me more than any explanation could.
“How long has this been happening?”
Tyler’s eyes filled.
“Since you started traveling more.”
I felt sick.
My job had required three trips in the past two months.
Two nights.
Three nights.
This trip had been scheduled for five.
Every time, Jennifer sent pictures.
Lily smiling at breakfast.
Lily in clean pajamas.
Lily holding a stuffed animal.
I had looked at those photos in hotel rooms and thought everything was fine.
Jennifer had even joked that Lily barely noticed I was gone.
I believed her.
I looked down at my daughter.
“Baby, did Jennifer hurt you?”
Lily stared at Max.
She didn’t answer.
Jennifer immediately said, “See? Because I didn’t.”
Tyler’s voice cracked.
“She told Lily bad girls get taken away if they complain.”
My chest tightened.
Jennifer stepped toward him.
“You ungrateful little—”
I stood.
“Stay where you are.”
This time I didn’t touch her.
I didn’t even move closer.
I simply took out my phone.
Jennifer’s expression changed.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling the police.”
Her confidence disappeared for the first time.
“Mark, think about this.”
“I am.”
“You assaulted me.”
“I know.”
“You could be arrested.”
“I know.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think they’re just going to hand Lily to you after they see my neck?”
“No.”
That answer stopped her.
I looked at Tyler.
“Do you want the police to see the videos?”
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
Jennifer’s face twisted.
“Tyler, I am your mother.”
Tears spilled down his cheeks.
“I know.”
The words sounded like an apology.
That broke something in me.
Not anger this time.
Something worse.
Because Tyler loved her.
Of course he did.
Children can be terrified of someone and still love them.
They can be hurt by a parent and still desperately want that parent to become safe.
I understood that now.
I called 911.
Jennifer began pacing.
“You’re destroying this family.”
“No,” Tyler whispered.
She stopped.
He looked at her.
“You did.”
Ten minutes later, two patrol cars pulled into the driveway.
By then, I had taken pictures of Lily’s knees.
I had also noticed a small bruise beneath her sleeve.
When I touched the fabric near it, she pulled away.
“I bumped the door,” she whispered.
Tyler looked at the floor.
Jennifer heard him breathing differently.
“Don’t you dare,” she said.
Officer Elena Martinez entered first.
Her partner, Officer Grant, followed.
They separated us immediately.
Jennifer talked first.
She cried.
She showed them her neck.
She told them I had come home unexpectedly, become violent, and attacked her in front of the children.
She did not mention the dog tray.
She did not mention the laundry room.
When Officer Grant asked me what happened, I told him everything.
Including what I had done.
“You put both hands around her neck?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know. A few seconds.”
“Did she lose consciousness?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten to kill her?”
“No.”
“Did you prevent her from breathing?”
“I don’t know.”
The officer studied me.
I wanted to defend myself.
I wanted to tell him what I had seen.
But I knew excuses would only make things worse.
“I lost control,” I said. “It was wrong.”
He nodded once.
Then Officer Martinez came into the hallway.
“We need to see the phone.”
Tyler was sitting with Lily on the couch.
He handed it over.
“Please don’t delete anything.”
“We won’t.”
“There’s a folder called School.”
Jennifer went pale.
Officer Martinez looked at him.
“Why is it called School?”
“So Mom wouldn’t open it.”
Jennifer shouted from the kitchen.
“He has been manipulated by Mark!”
Tyler started crying.
Lily covered her ears.
Officer Martinez immediately ordered Jennifer to stop yelling.
Then she opened the folder.
There were seventeen videos.
Seventeen.
Not two.
Not three.
Seventeen.
Some were only a few seconds long.
Others were several minutes.
I watched Officer Martinez’s face change as she scrolled through the thumbnails.
“What is this one?” she asked.
Tyler pointed.
“That was Tuesday.”
She played it.
The video showed Jennifer standing over Lily at the kitchen table.
There was a plate in front of Lily.
Broccoli.
Nothing else.
Tyler sat several feet away.
His plate had chicken, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.
“I’m hungry,” Lily said.
“You should have eaten at lunch.”
“I did.”
“No, you wasted food.”
“I didn’t.”
Jennifer grabbed Lily’s plate.
“Then you can wait until breakfast.”
Tyler’s voice came from behind the camera.
“She ate her lunch, Mom.”
Jennifer looked toward him.
The video jerked.
“You stay out of it.”
“She did.”
“You want to lose dinner too?”
The video ended.
Officer Martinez opened another.
Lily was standing in a hallway.
Her favorite stuffed rabbit was on the floor.
Jennifer picked it up.
“Tell me what you did.”
“I spilled juice.”
“And?”
“I said sorry.”
“And?”
Lily looked confused.
Jennifer held the rabbit over a trash bag.
“And I’m bad.”
My entire body went cold.
“I’m bad,” Lily repeated.
Jennifer dropped the rabbit into the trash.
Lily began sobbing.
The video ended.
I heard a small sound beside me.
Lily.
She was watching.
I quickly crouched.
“You are not bad.”
She stared at me.
“Jennifer said—”
“I don’t care what Jennifer said.”
I kept my voice soft.
“You are not bad. You are four. Four-year-olds spill things. Four-year-olds make mistakes. Daddy makes mistakes too.”
Her eyes moved toward the kitchen.
I knew what she was thinking.
She had watched mine twenty minutes earlier.
“I made a bad choice when I grabbed Jennifer,” I said quietly. “That was wrong.”
Lily studied my face.
“You were mad.”
“Yes.”
“Because of me?”
“No.”
I swallowed.
“Never because of you.”
Her little chin trembled.
Officer Martinez turned away for a second.
Then Tyler tugged at her sleeve.
“There’s another one.”
He pointed to a video near the bottom.
“This is the worst one I saw.”
Jennifer heard him.
“No.”
For the first time, she sounded afraid.
“Tyler, don’t.”
Officer Martinez pressed play.
The video began in the upstairs hallway.
Jennifer was speaking to someone on the phone.
Lily was sitting against the wall.
Her face was wet with tears.
Jennifer’s voice was clear.
“Yes, I know.”
Pause.
“No, Mark still thinks she’s having tantrums because she misses him.”
Another pause.
Then Jennifer laughed.
Not loudly.
But I heard it.
“I told you. By the time he figures it out, she’ll be too scared to tell him anything.”
I stopped breathing.
The person on the other end said something too faint for the phone to capture.
Jennifer answered.
“No. Tyler won’t say anything.”
Tyler’s face crumpled beside me.
Jennifer continued.
“He knows what happens if he does.”
The video shook.
Tyler must have been hiding behind the stair railing.
Then Lily spoke.
“Can I have water?”
Jennifer covered the phone.
“You already had water.”
“I’m thirsty.”
“Go to your room.”
“But—”
“Now.”
Lily stood.
Jennifer grabbed her arm.
The video caught Lily crying out.
Then Jennifer dragged her toward the bedroom.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Officer Martinez handed the phone to her partner.
“Upload everything.”
Jennifer immediately began shouting.
“That is taken out of context!”
“Ma’am, stop.”
“You don’t understand!”
Officer Grant stepped toward her.
She backed away.
Then Officer Martinez looked at me.
Her expression was serious.
“Mr. Carter, we have two separate problems here.”
I already knew.
My stomach dropped.
“One involves possible child abuse.”
I nodded.
“The other involves your admitted assault on your wife.”
Lily tightened her grip around my hand.
“Are you taking Daddy?”
Officer Martinez crouched.
“Sweetheart, I need to talk to your daddy for a little while.”
“No.”
Lily wrapped both arms around my leg.
“No, no, no.”
I closed my eyes.
This was the consequence of what I had done.
Jennifer watched from the kitchen.
And for one second, I saw satisfaction flicker across her face.
She knew it too.
My mistake had given her exactly what she needed.
Officer Grant approached me.
“I need you to turn around.”
Lily screamed.
“Daddy!”
Tyler ran to her and grabbed her shoulders.
I turned around.
The handcuffs closed around my wrists.
Jennifer smiled.
Then Tyler looked at Officer Martinez.
“There’s one more video.”
Jennifer’s smile vanished.
May you like
Tyler wiped his tears.
“It shows why she wanted Mr. Mark to get angry.”
