Chapter 1

I came home from a business trip two days early and found my 4-year-old daughter on her knees, picking scraps from the dog’s tray while my wife’s son ate pizza at the table.

I knew something was wrong before I even opened the front door.

Our golden retriever, Max, was barking like crazy from inside.

“Emily?” I called.

Nobody answered.

Then I heard my little girl crying.

Not loudly.

The kind of crying a child does when she has learned that making noise only makes things worse.

I dropped my suitcase and ran toward the kitchen.

My daughter Lily was kneeling on the tile floor.

Her tiny hands were reaching into Max’s food tray, picking up pieces of cold chicken and soggy bread.

“Eat it,” my wife Jennifer snapped. “Maybe next time you’ll learn not to waste food.”

Across the room, Jennifer’s 8-year-old son Tyler sat at the dining table eating pepperoni pizza.

There was an entire box in front of him.

Lily looked up and saw me.

“Daddy…”

The piece of food fell from her hand.

Jennifer spun around.

Her face went white.

“Mark, you weren’t supposed to be home until Friday.”

I didn’t answer.

I looked at Lily’s knees.

They were red from the hard floor.

Then I saw Max’s regular dog food sitting untouched beside her.

That meant Jennifer had deliberately put human leftovers into his tray.

“What are you doing to my daughter?”

Jennifer stood quickly.

“Don’t overreact. She was being disrespectful.”

“Disrespectful?”

My voice barely came out.

“She threw away her lunch,” Jennifer said. “I’m teaching her consequences.”

Lily suddenly whispered, “Daddy, I didn’t throw it away.”

Jennifer’s eyes shot toward her.

“Be quiet.”

Something inside me snapped.

I crossed the kitchen before Jennifer could move.

My hands closed around her throat, and I shoved her against the wall.

“You made my four-year-old eat off the floor?”

Jennifer clawed at my wrists.

“Dad!” Tyler screamed.

Then Lily grabbed my pant leg.

“Daddy, please stop.”

I let Jennifer go and immediately picked Lily up.

She wrapped both arms around my neck so tightly I could barely breathe.

That was when Tyler slowly put down his pizza.

He looked at his mother.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” he whispered.

Jennifer froze.

Tyler reached into his backpack and pulled out an old phone.

“I recorded everything because you told me nobody would believe Lily.”

Jennifer lunged toward him.

But Tyler stepped behind me and pressed play.

The first video showed Lily kneeling exactly where I had found her.

The second showed Jennifer locking Lily inside a dark laundry room.

Then Tyler looked at me with tears running down his face.

“Mr. Mark… those aren’t the worst ones.”
