Chapter 9: The Family Meeting

The family group exploded.

Messages appeared one after another.

*What happened?*

*Is Emily okay?*

*Is the baby safe?*

But the worst part wasn’t the questions.

It was the assumptions.

My mother had already planted the idea.

Before anyone knew the truth.

Emily sat beside me, staring at the phone.

“I can’t believe she did this.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“You didn’t do it.””

“But I trusted her.””

Emily reached for my hand.

“You trusted your mother.””

That sentence hurt because it was true.

I had spent years believing love meant giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

But sometimes that same belief could blind you.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was my aunt.

I answered.

“James?””

“Your mother says there are problems at your house.””

I looked at Emily.

“What problems?””

“She says Emily is overwhelmed.””

I almost laughed.

Overwhelmed.

That was the word my mother wanted everyone to use.

Not abused.

Not hurt.

Not mistreated.

Overwhelmed.

“She’s lying.””

My aunt became quiet.

“James, your mother is worried.””

“No.””

I looked at Emily.

“She’s controlling.””

My aunt sighed.

“You’re angry right now.””

“No. I’m awake.””

There was silence.

Then my aunt said:

“Your mother invited everyone over tonight.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“She wants to talk.””

I knew immediately.

A performance.

A room full of people.

My mother telling her version first.

Making Emily look unstable.

Making herself look like the victim.

“I’ll be there.””

Emily looked at me.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes, I do.””

The evening came quickly.

When we arrived at my mother’s house, almost everyone was already there.

My uncles.

My aunts.

My cousins.

All sitting quietly.

Waiting.

My mother stood in the center of the living room.

She looked sad.

Not angry.

Sad.

It was the perfect expression.

“James.””

I didn’t respond.

She looked at Emily.

“I’m sorry things have gotten this far.””

Emily held Lily closer.

My mother sighed.

“I only wanted to help.””

I looked around.

Everyone was watching.

Waiting for me to defend her.

Then my mother pulled out a folder.

“I have proof.””

My stomach tightened.

She handed papers to my aunt.

“These show Emily has been struggling since the birth.””

I stepped forward.

“Those are hospital records.””

My mother looked surprised.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you still believe her?””

I stared at her.

“She was recovering from childbirth.””

My mother shook her head.

“That’s exactly what I mean.””

She turned to everyone.

“He’s too emotional to see what’s happening.””

I felt the room change.

Then Emily stepped forward.

Her voice was quiet.

But steady.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held Lily close.

“You’re wrong.””

My mother smiled.

“Emily—”

“No.””

For the first time, Emily interrupted her.

“You don’t get to speak for me anymore.””

The room went silent.

My mother’s expression hardened.

Emily continued.

“You wanted everyone to believe I was weak.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“But you forgot something.””

She looked at me.

“I’m not alone anymore.””

My mother stared at her.

Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.

“You really want James to know everything?””

Emily froze.

I looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?””

My mother smiled.

“Ask your wife why she never told you about the phone call she received before Lily was born.””

Emily’s face went pale.

May you like

And suddenly, I realized there was still one secret left.

A secret even my wife had been afraid to tell me.
