Chapter 3: The Truth My Wife Hid

“James?””

The voice belonged to my older sister, Rachel.

I stepped away from my mother.

“Rachel, I need you to come over.””

There was a pause.

“What happened?””

I looked toward the kitchen.

At the rag still lying on the floor.

At the coffee cup my mother had left beside it.

At the woman I had trusted inside my home.

“I found Mom hurting Emily.””

Silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

“What?””

My mother’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked nervous.

“James, don’t involve your sister.””

I ignored her.

“Rachel, did you know?””

Another pause.

That was all I needed.

“You knew?””

Rachel sighed.

“I was going to tell you.””

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?””

My mother stepped closer.

“Hang up.””

“No.””

“James.””

“No, Mom. I want to hear this.””

Rachel’s voice trembled through the phone.

“After Lily was born, Mom called me.””

“What did she say?””

“She said Emily was being dramatic. She said you were too distracted by your wife to see the truth.””

I looked at Linda.

“She told you she was making Emily work?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She said she was teaching her.””

My hands shook.

“Teaching her what?””

My sister was quiet.

Then she answered.

“Teaching her not to become like your father’s first wife.””

I frowned.

“What does that even mean?””

My mother’s eyes widened.

“Rachel.””

But my sister continued.

“She told me Emily needed to learn her place.””

The room went completely silent.

Emily stood at the top of the stairs holding Lily.

She had heard everything.

My mother looked up at her.

“You weren’t supposed to hear that.””

Emily hugged our daughter closer.

“Was that what you thought of me?””

Linda looked away.

“I was trying to make you stronger.””

Emily slowly walked downstairs.

Her voice was quiet.

But stronger than I had ever heard it.

“No.””

My mother stared at her.

“No?””

“You weren’t trying to make me stronger.””

Emily looked at the floor.

“You were trying to break me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

My mother had always controlled everything.

The family gatherings.

The holidays.

The decisions.

But I had never seen the damage until it happened to someone I loved.

Linda shook her head.

“You’re turning my son against me.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

Her expression froze.

“My choices did that.””

Emily looked at me.

“James, I don’t want you to lose your mother because of me.””

I walked toward her.

“You didn’t do this.””

“But she’s your family.””

I looked at Lily in her arms.

Then at my wife.

“This is my family.””

My mother’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

I answered without hesitation.

“I’m choosing the person who needed me and was hurt while I wasn’t looking.””

She grabbed her purse.

“You’ll regret this.””

Maybe she believed that.

Maybe she thought I would apologize after a few days.

Maybe she thought I was still the little boy who needed her approval.

But as she walked toward the door, something fell from her purse.

A small notebook.

She didn’t notice.

I picked it up.

At first, I thought it was just a grocery list.

Then I saw Emily’s name written on the first page.

And underneath it were dates.

Instructions.

Rules.

My blood ran cold.

Because my mother hadn’t just been trying to control my wife.

May you like

She had been planning it.

And the next page revealed something I never expected to see.
