Chapter 4: Before She Met Me

“No,” I said into Vanessa’s phone.

“She told me she’d never met Rachel.””

Mark Hale went silent.

Across the living room, Vanessa gripped the banister so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Then Mark said, “Daniel, that’s a lie.””

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

I stepped away.

“Hang up!”” she shouted.

“You don’t know who he is!””

“I know exactly who he is. Your uncle.””

“He’s not my uncle. He’s a bitter old man who hated my father.””

Mark heard her.

“That sounds like Vanessa.””

“Tell me what you found,” I said.

“Not over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because there are photographs, letters, and a flash drive. And because after what I found, I don’t trust anyone in Thomas’s family.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“Listen to him, Daniel. He wants money.””

Mark ignored her.

“Do you remember Rachel working at Preston Medical Center?””

I did.

Before Emily was born, Rachel had worked there as an administrative coordinator.

“Yes.””

“My brother was on the hospital foundation board.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Rachel discovered something involving Thomas,” Mark continued.

“I don’t know the entire story yet. But I know they met repeatedly.””

“And Vanessa?””

“I have a photograph of Vanessa with Rachel.””

My stomach dropped.

“What kind of photograph?””

“Coffee shop. Summer of 2018. They’re sitting together.””

That was months before Rachel became pregnant.

Years before Vanessa supposedly met me at a charity fundraiser.

“Send it.””

“Daniel—”

“Send it now.””

A few seconds later, Vanessa’s phone buzzed.

I opened the message.

The photograph was grainy but clear enough.

Rachel sat near a café window.

Across from her was a younger Vanessa.

Same dark hair.

Same sharp jawline.

Same silver bracelet Vanessa still wore sometimes.

Emily looked up at the screen.

“That’s Mommy.””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

Vanessa backed away.

“Pictures don’t prove anything.””

“You told me you never met her.””

“I forgot.””

“You forgot meeting my dead wife?””

“It was one coffee!””

“Then why lie?””

“Because I knew you’d react exactly like this!””

I almost laughed.

“You mean after discovering you’ve been withholding food from my daughter while hiding documents about her mother?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“She is not innocent.””

Emily recoiled.

I pointed toward the stairs.

“Go upstairs.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“What?””

“Pack a bag.””

“This is my home.””

“Not tonight.””

“You cannot throw me out because a six-year-old told you some dramatic little story.””

Caleb stood up.

“It’s not a story.””

Vanessa turned.

“Caleb, stop.””

“No.””

His voice shook, but he stayed standing.

“You told us not to give Emily food.””

Ava began crying.

“Mom said Daddy Daniel would leave us if Emily liked us too much.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“What?””

Ava wiped her cheeks.

“She said Emily wanted you all to herself.””

Vanessa marched toward her.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Ava backed into Caleb.

I moved between them.

“Don’t go near them.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked around the room and seemed to understand that nobody was standing beside her.

Her own children were afraid of her.

My daughter was hiding behind me.

And every lie she had built was cracking.

“I did everything for this family,” she said.

“No. You controlled this family.””

“You were never here!””

“I worked.””

“And I raised your child!””

“You punished my child for existing.””

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You don’t know what her mother did.””

There it was again.

Rachel.

“What did Rachel do to you?””

Vanessa stopped.

Mark was still on the phone.

I had almost forgotten.

He spoke quietly.

“Ask her about the forty-eight thousand.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“I saw the statement,” I said.

“Your father paid Rachel.””

“That had nothing to do with me.””

“What did he buy?””

“He didn’t buy anything.””

Mark interrupted.

“Thomas called it a settlement.””

Vanessa shouted toward the phone.

“You weren’t there!””

“No,” Mark replied.

“But I found his ledger.””

“What ledger?”” I asked.

“A handwritten record of payments. Rachel’s name appears three times.””

Three.

The statement upstairs showed only one.

“How much?””

“The first was twelve thousand. The second was forty-eight thousand. The third was listed as pending.””

“For how much?””

“Two hundred thousand.””

I stared at the wall.

Vanessa sank onto the bottom stair.

“What was Rachel supposed to do for that money?””

Mark hesitated.

“I think the better question is what Thomas wanted her not to do.””

Emily leaned against me.

I covered her ears gently.

“Say it.””

“Your wife was threatening to go to the police.””

Vanessa made a choking sound.

“About what?””

“I don’t know yet.””

“You found her letter.””

“Part of one. Thomas kept documents everywhere. I’m still sorting through them.””

“Where are you?””

“Fort Worth.””

“I’m coming.””

Vanessa jumped up.

“No!””

Everyone stared at her.

She realized her mistake immediately.

“Daniel, it’s late. The kids are upset. Think about what you’re doing.””

“I finally am.””

I ended the call after Mark texted me an address.

Then I called my mother.

She answered on the second ring.

“Daniel?””

“Mom, I need you to come get Emily.””

Silence.

Then her voice changed.

“What happened?””

“I’ll explain when you get here.””

“Is Emily safe?””

I looked at my daughter.

“She is now.””

“I’m leaving.””

When I hung up, Vanessa whispered, “You’re turning everyone against me.””

“No. They’re hearing the truth.””

I took Emily upstairs to pack pajamas.

As I zipped her little overnight bag, she climbed onto the bed.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at me?””

I stopped.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

“Because I told.””

I sat beside her.

“Emily, listen to me. You will never be in trouble for telling me when someone hurts you.””

She studied my face.

Then she whispered, “Even if Vanessa says you’ll stop loving me?””

My chest tightened.

“She said that?””

Emily nodded.

“She said Mommy made you sad, and I make you remember Mommy.””

I pulled her against me.

“That is not your fault.””

A minute later, she whispered something against my shirt.

“There’s another secret.””

I leaned back.

“What secret?””

“Vanessa used to go in your office when you were sleeping.””

“When?””

“A lot.””

“What did she do?””

Emily looked toward the hallway.

“She opened the box with Mommy’s things.””

I stood.

Rachel’s box.

Letters.

Photographs.

Her old phone.

I had kept everything locked inside my office closet.

I ran downstairs.

The office door was open.

The closet safe stood behind several hanging coats.

I entered the code.

The door clicked.

The box was there.

But when I opened it, Rachel’s old phone was gone.

And taped to the bottom of the empty compartment was a small white note.

Four words were written in Vanessa’s handwriting.

*You should have burned it.*
