Chapter 13: Rachel’s Other Child

“There is another child.””

For a moment, I couldn't make the words mean anything.

I stood outside the police station with Vanessa ten feet away and traffic moving through downtown Dallas as if my life hadn't just split open again.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Mom’s voice trembled.

“I think you need to read this yourself.””

“Is the child mine?””

“I don't know.””

“Mom.””

“Rachel doesn't say in the first paragraph.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

“I'm coming home.””

I ended the call.

Vanessa stood.

“What happened?””

“Rachel left Emily a letter.””

Her face changed.

“You found it?””

“You knew about it.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you give it to Emily?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I found it with Rachel’s phone.””

“And told a six-year-old not to open it?””

“I didn't know what else to do.””

“You could have given it to me.””

“I was afraid of what was inside.””

I shook my head.

“That's been your answer for everything.””

I walked away.

At Mom’s house, Emily ran to me.

“Daddy!””

I lifted her.

For a few seconds, I just held her.

She smelled like strawberry shampoo and the pancakes Mom apparently made after we left.

“Grandma said Mommy wrote me something.””

“She did.””

“Is Mommy mad at me?””

My throat tightened.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Are you sure?””

“Absolutely.””

She looked relieved.

That hurt.

I carried her to the couch.

Caleb and Ava were upstairs.

Mom handed me the letter.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

Rachel’s handwriting covered three pages.

Emily leaned against me.

“Can you read it?””

I nodded.

“Together.””

I started.

“Dear Emily, if your father is sitting beside you when you hear this, then the most important thing I prayed for came true—you still have him.””

Emily smiled.

I continued.

“You were four months old when I wrote this. You are asleep beside me wearing the yellow pajamas your daddy says make you look like a duck.””

Emily giggled.

“I like ducks.””

“So did your mom.””

My voice nearly failed.

I kept reading.

“Daniel, if you're reading too, I'm sorry. I kept things from you because I thought I was protecting you. I understand now that secrets don't protect families. They only decide who gets hurt last.””

Mom sat across from us.

Tears ran silently down her face.

Then came the line.

“There is another child.””

I stopped.

Emily looked up.

“Who?””

I continued.

“Her name is Vanessa Hale.””

My heart dropped.

Not a hidden baby.

Not another daughter of mine.

Rachel meant Vanessa.

“I discovered that Vanessa is Robert’s daughter. Daniel, that makes her your half sister.””

I exhaled slowly.

We already knew.

But the next paragraph was new.

“I also discovered Thomas knew long before Vanessa did. He blamed Robert for destroying his marriage, but he couldn't stop loving Vanessa as his own daughter. That contradiction poisoned him.””

Emily frowned.

“What does poisoned mean?””

“It means being angry for so long that it changes how you treat people.””

She considered that.

“Like Vanessa?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Rachel continued.

“Thomas told me something else. He believed the truth about Vanessa would eventually reach Daniel. He wanted me to make sure it never did.””

Mom whispered, “Why?””

I read on.

“Because Daniel’s father left something for both of his children.””

I stopped.

“Something?””

The letter explained.

Before Robert died, he had updated a private trust.

One beneficiary was me.

The other was unnamed publicly but identified through sealed instructions.

His biological daughter.

Vanessa.

Thomas discovered it after Robert’s death.

Instead of telling Vanessa, he buried it.

“He stole her inheritance,” Mom whispered.

“Looks like it.””

The trust wasn't enormous.

But it wasn't small either.

Rachel estimated Vanessa’s share had been worth around $300,000 when Robert died.

With investments, it could be much more now.

Rachel had found evidence Thomas secretly diverted the money.

That explained part of the foundation fraud.

He had been replacing money he had taken elsewhere.

I continued reading.

“Daniel, Vanessa has every right to know what Robert left her. But please remember this: money does not repair childhood, and truth does not automatically heal people. What Vanessa chooses to do with the truth will be her responsibility.””

I stopped.

That sentence felt written for the woman Vanessa would become.

Then came Rachel’s final paragraph.

“Emily, if you're old enough to understand this, I want you to know something about your father. Daniel will blame himself for things he could not see. Don't let him.””

I couldn't continue.

Emily took the paper.

Her reading was still slow, but she sounded out the next sentence.

“Your... daddy... loves... big.””

Mom covered her mouth.

Emily looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

I laughed through tears.

“I’m not sure.””

“I think it means you love me this big.””

She stretched both arms wide.

I pulled her into my chest.

“That sounds right.””

Later, after Emily fell asleep beside Mom, I photographed every page and sent them to Detective Santos.

Then I called the attorney who handled my father’s estate.

He had retired.

His former firm still existed.

By late afternoon, I was speaking with a partner named Grace Whitmore.

“Yes,” she said after checking archived records.

“There was a private trust.””

“Was there a second beneficiary?””

“I need authorization before discussing details.””

“I can send Rachel’s documents.””

“That would help.””

“What happened to the trust?””

A pause.

“Mr. Cross, there was litigation after your father died.””

“I never knew that.””

“You were a minor. Thomas Hale challenged part of the trust.””

My pulse jumped.

“Did he win?””

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“The second beneficiary never came forward.””

“Because Thomas never told her.””

“That may explain it.””

“Where is the money?””

“Some funds were distributed to you at twenty-five.””

I remembered receiving an investment account I thought came from Dad’s life insurance.

“And the rest?””

Grace hesitated.

“The undistributed portion appears to have remained in trust.””

“How much?””

“I'll need to calculate it.””

Then she said something that made me sit upright.

“There’s another condition.””

“What?””

“If both biological children of Robert Cross were identified, each was entitled to equal shares.””

“Meaning Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“And Thomas knew.””

“If the documents you described are authentic, it appears possible.””

I looked through the window at Emily sleeping safely on Mom’s couch.

“What happens now?””

“We verify Vanessa’s identity.””

I almost laughed.

“I have a DNA report.””

Grace paused.

“You have what?””

Before I could answer, another call came through.

Detective Santos.

I switched over.

“Daniel, we found the Mercedes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Thomas’s?””

“Yes.””

“After seven years?””

“It was sold to a collector after his death.””

“And?””

“The current owner preserved it extremely well.””

I stood.

“Did you test it?””

“We found something on the passenger-side front panel.””

“What?””

“Trace material consistent with automotive paint.””

I stopped breathing.

“What color?””

May you like

Santos answered quietly.

“The same manufacturer color code as Rachel’s car.””
