Chapter 7: The Voice Outside the Door

"Rachel? I know you're in there.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

The screen remained black, but the audio continued.

A soft knock.

Then another.

Rachel whispered somewhere close to the microphone.

"She's here.""

Daniel leaned toward the computer.

The investigator beside him, Detective Harris, lifted one hand.

"Don't touch anything.""

Melissa's voice came again.

"Rachel, open the door. We need to talk.""

Rachel didn't answer.

A door handle rattled.

"Please leave," Rachel finally called.

Melissa laughed softly.

"You came to Martin's office threatening people, and now you don't want to talk?""

"I said leave.""

"Daniel knows you're meeting with accountants behind his back?""

Rachel's breathing changed.

"You stay away from my husband.""

There was a pause.

Then Melissa said, "So Martin didn't tell you everything.""

Rachel went silent.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

On the recording, a lock clicked.

The next sounds were muffled.

Footsteps.

A chair scraping.

Then Rachel's voice became clearer.

"What didn't he tell me?""

Melissa answered.

"Ask Daniel where he was the night of the Mercer Foundation dinner.""

Daniel frowned.

The Mercer Foundation dinner.

Four years earlier.

Before Lily was born.

He had attended with Rachel.

Hundreds of people had been there.

"What does that have to do with anything?"" Rachel asked.

"You really don't remember me?""

Silence.

Then Rachel whispered, "Wait.""

Melissa laughed.

"There it is.""

Daniel closed his eyes, forcing himself to remember.

A ballroom.

Champagne.

Rachel wearing a dark blue dress.

He remembered bumping into a young woman near the coat check.

She'd dropped a stack of folders.

Daniel had helped gather them.

She'd thanked him.

He hadn't thought about her again.

Until now.

"My God," Daniel whispered.

Harris looked at him.

"You remember something?""

"I met Melissa years before she claimed we met.""

The audio continued.

Rachel sounded stunned.

"You were working that dinner.""

"Temporary staff," Melissa replied.

"I remember you too.""

"Why?""

"Because your father spent the whole night talking about Lily's future.""

Rachel's voice hardened.

"You listened to a private conversation?""

"I listened to wealthy people discuss money like it was weather.""

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

Rachel said, "So that's where this started?""

"No.""

A chair creaked.

Melissa's voice became colder.

"That's where I learned your name.""

Rachel whispered, "Get out.""

"You asked for the truth.""

"I asked you to leave.""

"Martin owes me.""

"Martin is going to prison.""

"Then maybe you should think carefully about what happens to everyone around him.""

Rachel's voice shook.

"Is that a threat?""

"No.""

A pause.

"It's advice.""

The recording went quiet.

Then came footsteps.

A door slammed.

For several seconds, Daniel heard only Rachel breathing.

Then she returned to the camera.

The picture came back.

Her face filled the screen.

She was crying now.

"Daniel.""

He felt his chest cave inward.

"If you're watching this, I need you to understand something.""

Rachel wiped her cheek.

"I didn't tell you because I thought I could fix it first.""

She held up a photograph.

Daniel couldn't see it clearly.

"I remembered Melissa after she mentioned the foundation dinner.""

Rachel turned the photograph toward the camera.

A group of event workers stood beneath a banner.

Melissa was among them.

But she wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was Martin.

Daniel whispered, "They knew each other years earlier.""

Harris nodded.

Rachel continued.

"Martin told me Melissa only learned about Lily's trust recently. That's a lie. They were connected before my father even finalized it.""

She placed the photograph down.

"I don't know how far this goes.""

Her expression changed.

"But I know this: Melissa has been watching our family for years.""

The video ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

Harris removed the USB drive.

"We'll preserve this as evidence.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You heard the threat.""

"I heard language that could be interpreted that way. We need context.""

"My wife died three days later.""

"I know.""

"And Melissa married me.""

"I know.""

"Then tell me what you're thinking.""

Harris remained careful.

"I'm thinking we need Rachel's medical records, Martin's financial records, and every communication between Martin and Melissa.""

Daniel hated the calmness.

But he understood it.

Evidence first.

Answers second.

His phone vibrated.

Ben.

Daniel answered immediately.

"Everything okay?""

Ben's voice sounded wrong.

"Daniel, where's Lily's blue backpack?""

Daniel stood.

"Why?""

"She says something's missing.""

"What?""

In the background, Daniel heard Lily crying.

Then her little voice:

"Daddy?""

"I'm here, sweetheart.""

"My picture is gone.""

"What picture?""

"The Mommy picture.""

Daniel's heart accelerated.

"Where did you keep it?""

"In my backpack.""

"What did it look like?""

"Mommy Rachel holding me.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Okay. We'll find it.""

"No, Daddy.""

Lily began crying harder.

"Melissa took it.""

Daniel went still.

"When?""

"Today.""

"How do you know?""

"She told Grandma she needed the back.""

"The back of the picture?""

"Yes.""

Daniel looked at Harris.

The detective was already listening.

Daniel asked, "What was on the back?""

Lily sniffled.

"Mommy's secret numbers.""

Harris grabbed a notepad.

Daniel's voice softened.

"What numbers?""

"I don't know.""

"Did Mommy write them?""

"Uh-huh.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rachel had hidden something else.

"Sweetheart, did Melissa say where she was taking the picture?""

Lily hesitated.

"She said she had to get there before you did.""

Daniel's pulse jumped.

"Get where?""

Lily answered with the innocence of a four-year-old who had no idea what her words meant.

"Mommy Rachel's little house.""

Daniel stared at Harris.

Rachel had never owned another house.

At least, not one Daniel knew about.

Then Harris's computer chimed.

A records search had returned.

He turned the screen toward Daniel.

A property was listed under Rachel's maiden name.

A small cabin forty miles outside town.

Daniel had never seen it.

Harris reached for his jacket.

"Stay here.""

Daniel stood.

"That's my wife's property.""

"And Melissa may already be there.""

"I'm coming.""

Harris started to object.

Then another officer entered.

"Detective?""

"What?""

"We just got a hit on Melissa Carter's vehicle.""

Daniel's chest tightened.

"Where?""

May you like

The officer looked directly at him.

"Heading toward the same cabin.""
