Chapter 11: Locker 214

Daniel grabbed Melissa's arm and pulled her behind a concrete pillar.

The SUV shot past them.

Brakes screamed.

Detective Harris's voice came through Daniel's earpiece.

"Stay down!""

Police vehicles surged into the garage from both entrances.

The SUV accelerated toward the exit.

It never made it.

Two police cars blocked the ramp.

The driver slammed on the brakes.

Officers surrounded the vehicle.

"Hands where we can see them!""

Daniel stayed behind the pillar.

Melissa was shaking violently.

"Is that Eric?""

"No.""

"Then who?""

"I don't know.""

"Melissa.""

"I swear.""

Officers pulled the driver from the SUV.

Harris approached minutes later.

"Daniel, you're clear.""

"Who is he?""

"Not Eric.""

"Does Melissa know him?""

Harris looked at her.

She shook her head.

The driver was a man in his twenties.

Daniel had never seen him.

Harris said, "We'll identify him.""

Melissa grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

"The photograph.""

She handed it to him.

Rachel sat on the cabin porch holding baby Lily.

The back had been carefully peeled open.

Written beneath the paper backing were two numbers.

214.

And 7319.

"Locker and code," Melissa whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

"When did you find this?""

"Today.""

"Why was it in Lily's backpack?""

"I don't know.""

"You took it from a four-year-old.""

"I knew Rachel hid things around Lily.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"That's why you kept searching her room.""

Melissa looked away.

"Yes.""

"And that's why you wanted her gone.""

Melissa's eyes filled.

"At first, yes.""

"At first?""

"I thought if Lily lived somewhere else, I could search without you noticing.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Do you hear yourself?""

"I know.""

"No. I don't think you do.""

Melissa covered her face.

"I hated what I became.""

Daniel felt no sympathy.

"You had a thousand chances to stop.""

"I was scared.""

"So was Lily.""

Melissa dropped her hands.

That silenced her.

Harris approached.

"We're taking Ms. Carter in.""

Melissa nodded.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Open the locker before Eric does.""

"Why?""

"Because Rachel told Martin it contained the one thing that could prove who was really moving the money.""

"What is it?""

"I don't know.""

Harris escorted Melissa away.

Daniel watched her disappear into a police vehicle.

Then he called Ben.

"Kids?""

"Safe.""

"Lily awake?""

"She's coloring.""

"Put her on.""

A moment later:

"Daddy!""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Hey, sweetheart.""

"Are you coming back?""

"Yes.""

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

She lowered her voice.

"Is Melissa coming?""

"No.""

A pause.

"Okay.""

That tiny sound of relief strengthened Daniel's resolve.

"Lily, I need to ask you something.""

"Okay.""

"Do you remember Uncle Eric?""

"Your work friend?""

"Yes.""

Lily became quiet.

"Did he ever visit Mommy Rachel?""

"Uh-huh.""

Daniel's chest tightened.

"When?""

"I don't know.""

"That's okay. What do you remember?""

Lily thought.

"He was loud.""

"Did he yell?""

"Mommy did.""

"What did she say?""

Lily's answer came slowly.

"She said, 'Get out.''"

Daniel looked at Harris.

"Anything else?""

"Uncle Eric said Mommy couldn't prove it.""

Daniel felt cold.

"Lily, did you see him?""

"No. I was in my bed.""

Rachel had been alive.

Lily had been in the house.

Eric had been there.

"Thank you, sweetheart.""

"Did I do good?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"You don't ever have to earn 'good' with me. Okay?""

Lily didn't fully understand.

But she said, "Okay.""

Central Station was nearly empty that evening.

Harris arranged access to the locker area.

Locker 214 stood near the back.

Daniel entered 7319.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small metal case.

Harris photographed everything before removing it.

The case contained an old digital recorder.

Three USB drives.

A sealed envelope.

And a notebook.

Daniel recognized Rachel's handwriting.

The first page contained dates.

Names.

Account numbers.

Then:

MARTIN — records.

MELISSA — access/recruitment.

ERIC — directs transfers.

Daniel whispered, "She mapped the whole thing.""

Harris turned pages carefully.

Dozens of victims.

Trust funds.

Estates.

Business accounts.

Money had been moved through Carter Development, then distributed through shell companies.

At the back of the notebook, Rachel had written:

If anything happens to me, listen to recording 7.

Harris connected the digital recorder through evidence equipment.

Seven audio files.

He selected the last.

Rachel's voice came first.

"Eric, leave my house.""

Then Eric:

"You're making this bigger than it needs to be.""

"You stole from children.""

"I moved money.""

"You stole.""

"Martin made mistakes.""

"Don't blame Martin for your orders.""

Daniel clenched his jaw.

Rachel continued.

"I copied everything.""

Eric's voice changed.

"Where?""

"Somewhere you'll never find.""

"Give it to me.""

"No.""

A loud sound.

Not violence.

Something striking a table.

Then Eric said:

"You have a husband and a baby. Think carefully.""

Rachel answered:

"I am thinking about them.""

"You destroy me, you destroy Daniel's company too.""

"I'll tell Daniel tonight.""

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at the machine.

Harris said quietly, "This is significant.""

"Enough to arrest him?""

"It supports a larger case.""

Daniel looked at Rachel's notebook.

"Keep going.""

The sealed envelope was next.

Written across the front:

FOR DANIEL ONLY.

Harris photographed it.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was another letter.

Shorter.

Daniel read:

"Daniel, if you're reading this, I failed to tell you in time.""

He swallowed.

"Eric has threatened me, but threats aren't what frighten me most.""

Daniel continued.

"Martin told me Eric has been asking questions about my medication.""

Daniel stopped.

Harris looked up.

"What medication?""

Daniel whispered, "Rachel was taking antibiotics before she went to the hospital.""

He kept reading.

"I found one bottle in the kitchen that I don't recognize. I saved it.""

Daniel's hands shook.

The final line read:

"It's in the locker beneath this one.""

Everyone looked down.

Locker 215.

Harris crouched.

May you like

Its door was already open.

And it was empty.
