Chapter 9: My Father's Last Protection

I couldn't stop looking at the document.

My mother's signature appeared beneath mine.

The date was the same day we buried my father.

I remembered that afternoon.

The funeral home had smelled of lilies and polished wood. My mother had barely spoken. Daniel had handled most of the arrangements while I sat beside my father's photograph, trying to understand how a man who had been part of every important moment in my life could suddenly be gone.

Tyler had held my hand throughout the service.

He had whispered that everything would be okay.

Now I was looking at evidence that someone had used that day to prepare a document granting him access to my inheritance.

"Sarah," I whispered, "could this actually be valid?""

She studied the page.

"Not necessarily. We need the original, the trust's execution requirements, and the witness records. But there are enough irregularities here to justify an immediate challenge.""

Rebecca leaned over the desk.

"Can Tyler actually get the money?""

"Not if we act quickly.""

Sarah picked up her phone and called the trust administrator.

I listened as she explained the suspected forgery and requested an immediate restriction on all transactions involving the account.

After several minutes, she ended the call.

"They've placed a temporary hold.""

I exhaled.

"Thank God.""

"But there's something else.""

Sarah turned the document over.

A handwritten note had been attached to the back.

It read:

Release upon confirmation of beneficiary incapacity or written consent.

I frowned.

"What does beneficiary incapacity mean?""

Sarah looked at me carefully.

"It means someone may have been trying to establish that you were unable to manage your own affairs.""

I thought about the custody petition.

The allegations about postpartum depression.

The claims that I was unstable.

The false stories my mother had signed.

Suddenly, the pieces began fitting together.

"They were trying to make me look mentally incapable.""

Sarah nodded.

"That appears to be one possible explanation.""

Rebecca sat down.

"Tyler told me something similar when I confronted him about his financial problems. He said he needed a way to access money that wasn't technically his.""

I stared at her.

"Did he mention my father?""

"Yes. He said you had an inheritance and that your family had made sure he couldn't touch it.""

I remembered a conversation with Tyler shortly after my father's funeral.

We had been sitting in our kitchen.

He'd asked whether my father had left me anything.

I'd told him there was a trust.

He'd smiled.

"That's wonderful, sweetheart. Your dad would have wanted us to be secure.""

I'd believed him.

Sarah interrupted my thoughts.

"Emily, did your father ever tell you that he had concerns about Tyler?""

I looked up.

"Why?""

"Because the trust document includes a letter from your father.""

She opened another attachment.

It was a handwritten letter dated four months before his death.

My father's familiar handwriting filled the page.

To the trustee,

I want Emily to understand that this money is hers alone. It must never be treated as marital property or used to satisfy the debts or obligations of anyone she marries.

My eyes filled.

The letter continued.

I have concerns about how easily people can become distracted by financial security. Emily has a generous heart. I hope she never mistakes someone's promises for their character.

I covered my mouth.

My father had known something.

Maybe not the details.

Maybe not the affair.

But he had worried that someone might try to take advantage of me.

Sarah continued reading.

If Emily ever becomes a mother, I want her children to benefit from the trust as well. But no spouse, partner, or relative should be allowed to control it without her independent consent.

A tear rolled down my cheek.

My father had been protecting us even after his death.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

There is one additional instruction. If anyone attempts to obtain access through forged documents, the trustee should contact the person named in my sealed letter.

I looked at Sarah.

"Who is that person?""

She opened the next page.

A name appeared.

*Michael Bennett.*

Rebecca looked surprised.

"Michael?""

Sarah nodded.

"Your father apparently knew him.""

I stared at the page.

"How?""

Before Sarah could answer, my phone rang.

Michael.

I accepted.

"Emily, I just received a call from the trust administrator. Sarah told them to contact me.""

"Did you know my father?""

A pause.

Then he answered.

"Yes.""

I sat down.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your father asked me not to unless someone tried to interfere with the trust.""

My heart began racing.

"What did he know?""

Michael exhaled.

"Emily, your father and I worked together years ago. Before I joined the cruise company, I was involved in corporate investigations. He contacted me because he was concerned about Tyler's financial behavior.""

I closed my eyes.

"How long ago?""

"About a year before he died.""

I remembered Tyler complaining that my father didn't respect him.

He'd said Dad was controlling.

He'd accused him of trying to interfere in our marriage.

I had defended Tyler.

I had even stopped inviting my father to certain family dinners because I didn't want another argument.

"Did my father tell you Tyler was stealing?""

"No. He told me Tyler had been asking unusual questions about the trust and had attempted to obtain financial information without your knowledge.""

I felt sick.

"Why didn't Dad tell me?""

"He didn't want to destroy your marriage based on suspicion. He wanted to protect your inheritance without creating a confrontation.""

I wiped my face.

"What did he leave you?""

Michael was quiet for a moment.

"Something he asked me to keep until the trust was threatened.""

Sarah immediately leaned closer.

"What is it?""

Michael answered.

"A sealed envelope. It contains a letter, several bank records, and a recording your father made before he died.""

My heart stopped.

"A recording?""

"Yes.""

"What does it say?""

Michael hesitated.

"Your father believed Tyler wasn't acting alone.""

I looked at Rebecca.

She had gone pale.

"Who else?"" I whispered.

Michael lowered his voice.

"Someone inside your family.""

I stared at the trust document.

"Who?""

"I can't be certain until you hear the recording.""

"Where is it?""

"At my office. I'll bring it to Sarah tomorrow morning.""

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I sat without speaking.

Then Sarah received another email.

This one came from the trust administrator.

She opened the attachment.

It was a transaction request submitted two days earlier.

The amount was $300,000.

The destination account belonged to V. Sterling Consulting LLC.

Vanessa's company.

But the name of the person authorizing the transfer wasn't Tyler.

It was Daniel.

My brother.

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"How could he authorize anything?""

Sarah enlarged the document.

"Because someone has apparently submitted a power of attorney bearing your signature.""

Rebecca leaned closer.

"Is that the same document Tyler used for the house?""

Sarah nodded.

"Possibly.""

Then another notification appeared.

A message from my mother.

Emily, please call me. Daniel has disappeared, and Tyler says the police are looking for him.

I stared at the screen.

Before I could respond, a second message arrived.

He left something at my house. It's a USB drive with your father's name on it.

I immediately called her.

She answered in a whisper.

"Emily?""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Is Daniel there?""

"No. He left this morning.""

"Don't touch the USB drive. Don't give it to anyone. Sarah will arrange to collect it.""

My mother began crying.

"There's something else, sweetheart.""

"What?""

"I listened to part of it.""

My heart hammered.

"What did you hear?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Your father was talking about Tyler.""

I gripped the phone.

"And?""

My mother whispered:

"He said if Tyler ever got close to your inheritance, I should tell you the truth about the night your father died.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What truth?""

There was a long silence.

Then my mother said:

"Emily, your father didn't die believing Tyler was innocent.""

She began sobbing.

May you like

"He died knowing someone in this family had helped him.""

And just as I asked her who, the call suddenly went dead.
