Chapter 8

We left Dr. Reeves with certified copies of everything he was legally permitted to release.
Jonathan spent most of the drive back making calls.
Federal investigators.
A family-law attorney.
A forensic accountant.
The clinic's current legal department.
I stared out the window.
Claire sat beside me.
For once, she didn't speak.
Neither did I.
There are betrayals that make you angry.
Then there are truths so large they leave no room for anger.
My wife had hurt our daughter.
My best friend had been sleeping with her.
They had tried to remove me from my company.
My daughter's biological origin might trace back to a criminal scheme involving stolen embryos.
And my father had died weeks after discovering it.
Every answer opened another door.
Behind each door was something worse.
When we reached Boston, my phone exploded with messages.
Rebecca.
Howard.
Company counsel.
Reporters.
One subject line repeated.
BENNETT HOLDINGS CEO FAMILY CRISIS.
I opened the first article.
Someone had leaked the paternity report.
The headline implied I had discovered my daughter wasn't mine during a boardroom fight.
My stomach turned.
Lily was three years old and already being turned into gossip.
"Who leaked this?" I asked.
Claire looked at her phone.
"Ethan."
"You know that?"
"He threatened to."
"When?"
"Last week."
I stared at her.
"You knew he planned to expose Lily publicly?"
"He said only if necessary."
"And you stayed with him?"
Her face collapsed.
"I thought I could control him."
"You couldn't even control yourself."
She took the words without defending herself.
Rachel called.
"Don't come to my building."
"Why?"
"Reporters are downstairs."
I closed my eyes.
"How's Lily?"
"She has no idea. Maria is keeping her away from the windows."
"I'm coming."
"No. Go somewhere else first. I'll move her."
I hated that she was right.
Our family attorney arranged a private residence outside the city.
By evening, Lily was there with me.
When she saw me, she ran into my arms.
"Daddy!"
One word.
Everything else disappeared.
I dropped to my knees.
She hugged me.
I held her so tightly that she giggled.
"Daddy squish me."
I loosened my arms immediately.
"Sorry, bug."
She touched my face.
"You sad?"
My throat closed.
"A little."
She kissed my cheek.
"Better?"
I nearly broke.
"Much better."
She looked behind me.
"Mommy?"
I couldn't answer quickly enough.
Maria stepped in.
"Mommy is busy, sweetheart."
Lily's expression changed.
Not disappointment.
Relief.
I saw it.
So did Maria.
That settled something inside me.
Whatever came next, Claire would not be alone with Lily until professionals decided it was safe.
My family-law attorney agreed.
Emergency custody papers were filed that night based on the recordings and hospital documentation.
Claire did not fight them.
That surprised me.
Instead, she sent one message.
I deserve this. Lily doesn't. Protect her.
For the first time, she wasn't trying to manipulate me.
At least I hoped not.
At ten that night, Jonathan arrived with a forensic accountant named Maya Chen.
She placed a laptop on the table.
"We traced Meridian."
"To Ethan?"
"Indirectly."
"Who owns it?"
"Three layers of entities. Final beneficial owner appears to be the Cole Family Legacy Trust."
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
"But here's the interesting part."
She pulled up records.
"The trust predates Ethan's involvement in your company."
"Created by his mother?"
"Yes."
"Using money from the clinic?"
"Possibly."
Maya showed us old transactions.
Clinic funds had flowed into consulting entities.
Those entities purchased stakes in biotech companies.
Some eventually became investments held by Margaret Cole.
Ethan's family had not been cheated out of a fortune.
They may have built one from the clinic scheme.
"Does Ethan know?" I asked.
"We don't know."
Jonathan leaned back.
"But his recent transfers to Meridian suggest he was moving Bennett Holdings money into the same structure."
"Why?"
Maya changed screens.
"Because Bennett Holdings was running out of accessible cash."
I frowned.
"We have over seventy million liquid."
"Not anymore."
My stomach dropped.
She showed me.
Accounts had been pledged as collateral.
Lines of credit.
Guarantees.
Documents bearing my electronic signature.
I had never seen them.
"Those are forged."
"We think so."
"How much exposure?"
"Potentially thirty-two million."
I stood.
"How?"
"Ethan had executive authority. Someone also used your credentials."
"Claire?"
Maya looked uncomfortable.
"Maybe."
I called Claire.
She answered immediately.
"Daniel?"
"Did you ever use my company login?"
Silence.
"Claire."
"Yes."
I closed my eyes.
"How many times?"
"I don't know."
"How many?"
"Maybe six."
"Why?"
"Ethan said you asked him to have me upload documents when you were traveling."
"I never did."
"I know that now."
"Did you sign anything electronically?"
"Some authorizations."
Maya mouthed, Ask when.
"When?"
Claire gave dates.
Maya typed them in.
Her face changed.
"Those match."
I nearly threw the phone.
"You helped him move thirty-two million dollars."
Claire gasped.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"No. He said they were restructuring documents."
"You didn't ask me?"
"He said it was confidential."
"So you committed fraud because my boyfriend—"
I stopped.
The word was wrong.
Her boyfriend.
My business partner.
My wife.
My entire life had become absurd.
Claire started crying.
"I didn't know."
"You never wanted to know."
Silence.
Then she said, "There's something in the safe."
"What safe?"
"At our house."
"The study?"
"No. My dressing room."
I had no idea she had a safe.
"What is inside?"
"Copies of everything Ethan gave me."
Maya sat upright.
"Everything?"
"Documents. Notes. A flash drive."
"Why did you keep them?" I asked.
"Because about a month ago I stopped trusting him."
"After sleeping with him for how long?"
"Daniel."
"How long?"
She whispered, "Five months."
I closed my eyes.
Five months.
"Give me the safe combination."
"I'll come with you."
"No."
"He'll know where it is."
"Combination."
She gave it.
Private security escorted Jonathan and me to the house.
Claire had not returned since the previous night.
The place felt dead.
Lily's toys were still in the living room.
A cup sat near the sink.
Normal life frozen in place.
Upstairs, I found the safe behind a shoe cabinet in Claire's dressing room.
The combination worked.
Inside were folders.
A flash drive.
Cash.
A second phone.
And an envelope addressed to Daniel.
My name was written in my father's handwriting.
I froze.
Jonathan saw it.
"Don't touch anything else."
I put on gloves.
Opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Daniel,
If Claire gives you this, then everything has gone wrong.
I stared at the page.
My father had given the letter to Claire.
She had hidden it for four years.
I continued.
I made a mistake by believing I could protect you from the truth until I understood it fully. There are people around you who may use your trust against you. One of them may be someone you consider family.
My heart pounded.
I read faster.
Edward Cole's role in the clinic operation is documented. Margaret knew more than she admitted. Their son Ethan was young when much of this occurred, and I have no proof he participated. Do not punish him for his father's crimes without evidence.
I stopped.
Even knowing what Edward had done, my father had tried to protect Ethan from guilt by association.
That sounded like him.
Stubborn.
Harsh.
But fair.
Then came the final paragraph.
If anything happens to me before the investigation is complete, Samuel Reeves has the medical files. I have placed the financial evidence with someone I trust completely.
No name.
Only initials.
M.G.
Jonathan read over my shoulder.
"Do those initials mean anything?"
I shook my head.
Then the second phone inside Claire's safe vibrated.
We both jumped.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
You went to Reeves.
Another message.
You should have left the past buried.
Jonathan stared at me.
"Do not respond."
Then a photograph appeared.
It had been taken from across the street.
It showed Rachel carrying Lily into the temporary residence two hours earlier.
My blood froze.
May you like
A final message arrived.
Your father didn't listen either.
