Chapter 5

I did not go home.
That surprised Ethan.
It probably surprised Claire too.
For years, both of them had known exactly how to manipulate me.
Mention my father.
Question my loyalty.
Create an emergency.
I would move.
This time, I didn't.
"Send me a photo of the letter," I told Ethan.
"I'd rather explain in person."
"Then there is no letter."
"There is."
"Send it."
"Daniel—"
"Five seconds."
He hung up.
A minute later, three photographs arrived.
The document looked old.
My father's signature was at the bottom.
Jonathan asked me to forward everything.
I did.
Then he called.
"Don't trust this yet."
"Does it look real?"
"It looks convincing."
"What does it say?"
"Your father created a separate family trust shortly before his death. According to these pages, forty-nine percent of Bennett Holdings would transfer into trust for Lily upon a triggering event."
"What triggering event?"
"If you became incapacitated, died, or were removed as chief executive for cause."
I stared at the screen.
"Removed for cause."
"Yes."
"And Ethan scheduled a board meeting to remove me."
"Yes."
Rachel understood before I did.
"If Daniel gets removed, the shares move into Lily's trust."
Jonathan said, "According to this document."
"And Lily is three," Rachel said.
"Meaning someone controls the trust for her."
I scrolled.
Trustee.
My eyes stopped on a name.
Claire Bennett.
I felt the room tilt.
If the document was real, removing me from the company wouldn't just cost me my position.
It would move nearly half my ownership into a trust controlled by my wife.
And if Claire was working with Ethan...
"They don't need me to sign anything," I said.
Jonathan exhaled.
"Maybe the papers Claire tried to get you to sign were a fallback."
"Or something worse."
"We'll know once we retrieve them."
I looked toward Lily.
She shifted beneath the blanket.
I lowered my voice.
"Why would my father appoint Claire?"
"You said the trust was created before his death?"
"Yes."
"How was your relationship with Claire then?"
Perfect.
At least I thought it was.
My father adored her.
That was the irony.
For years he had called me reckless.
He had refused to give me control of the family investment company until I proved I could run my own business.
But he trusted Claire.
He once told me she was the steady one in our marriage.
If only he could see us now.
My phone buzzed again.
Ethan.
Come to the board meeting tomorrow. You deserve to hear everything.
I showed Jonathan.
"Go," he said.
Rachel looked shocked.
"You just told him not to go anywhere near Ethan."
"A board meeting with counsel present is different."
"You're coming?" I asked.
"Absolutely."
At six thirty the next morning, I drove to Bennett Holdings headquarters.
Maria stayed with Lily at Rachel's apartment.
Rachel came with me.
She had no official role in the company, but she owned three percent inherited from our father.
That gave her the right to attend certain shareholder matters.
Ethan had clearly forgotten that.
The building lobby felt different.
Employees avoided my eyes.
Two security guards stood near the elevators.
My badge worked.
Barely.
At the twenty-third floor, our chief operating officer, Rebecca Sloan, met us.
"Daniel, what's happening?"
"You tell me."
"I got an email at two in the morning saying there are allegations against you."
"What allegations?"
"Misuse of company funds. Harassment. Undisclosed conflicts."
I almost smiled.
They had gone for everything.
"Do you believe them?"
Rebecca looked me straight in the eye.
"No."
"Then don't make decisions until you see evidence."
The boardroom doors opened at eight.
Ethan sat at the far end.
He looked exhausted.
Claire sat beside him.
That hurt more than I expected.
She wore a navy suit.
Her hair was perfect.
She looked like she was attending a charity luncheon instead of helping my best friend remove me from my company less than twenty-four hours after hurting our daughter.
Beside them sat an attorney I didn't recognize.
Jonathan leaned toward me.
"That's Paul Mercer."
"You know him?"
"Corporate litigation. Expensive."
I sat.
Claire wouldn't look at me.
Ethan did.
"Thank you for coming."
I laughed once.
"This is my company."
"That's what we're here to discuss."
The board members shifted uncomfortably.
Jonathan placed a folder in front of him.
"Before anyone begins, be advised that Mr. Bennett disputes every allegation and reserves all rights concerning attempted fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, destruction of evidence, and conspiracy."
Ethan's attorney spoke.
"That's inflammatory."
Jonathan smiled.
"Good morning, Paul."
The tension was immediate.
Ethan opened a packet.
"Over the past six months, concerns have arisen regarding Daniel's leadership."
"Which concerns?" I asked.
He looked at me.
"Volatility."
I nearly laughed.
"You're sleeping with my wife."
Every person in the room froze.
Claire closed her eyes.
Ethan's attorney said, "This is not relevant."
"It becomes relevant when the man trying to remove me from my company is secretly involved with the trustee who gains control of forty-nine percent if I'm removed."
One board member, Howard Levin, leaned forward.
"What?"
Ethan stared at me.
"You saw the trust."
"I saw a photograph of something you claim is a trust."
Claire whispered, "Daniel, please."
I looked at her.
"Did you know about it?"
She said nothing.
"Did you know?"
"Yes."
The room erupted.
Questions.
Voices.
Ethan tried to restore order.
I didn't let him.
"How long?"
Claire swallowed.
"About a year."
"You knew for a year that my father left forty-nine percent of my company to Lily under conditions that could be triggered by my removal?"
"It wasn't your company when the trust was written."
"Answer the question."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
"Your father told me not to."
That stopped me.
"What?"
She looked at me for the first time.
"He made me promise."
"He's dead."
"I know."
"So why keep the promise now?"
Tears appeared in her eyes.
"Because he told me you would destroy everything if you learned the truth."
I leaned back.
There it was again.
My father.
Even dead, he was still being used against me.
Jonathan slid a document toward the board.
"We are requesting immediate independent authentication of the alleged trust."
Paul Mercer objected.
Howard raised a hand.
"No. He's right."
Ethan stiffened.
Howard continued.
"If this trust affects ownership upon Daniel's removal, we cannot vote without determining whether the document is valid and whether any directors have conflicts."
Another board member nodded.
Claire whispered something to Ethan.
He shook his head.
I watched them.
Then Rebecca entered the room without knocking.
Her face was pale.
"Ethan."
He glared at her.
"We're in session."
"You need to see this."
She placed a printed banking report on the table.
I recognized the account number.
Company operating reserve.
Rebecca pointed at three transactions.
Five hundred thousand dollars.
Eight hundred thousand.
One point two million.
All transferred over four months.
Recipient: Meridian Strategic Consulting LLC.
I had never heard of it.
"Who authorized these?" I asked.
Rebecca looked at Ethan.
His face changed.
"Those were approved expenses."
"Approved by whom?"
"Finance."
Rebecca shook her head.
"Finance says your executive code approved them."
Ethan's attorney leaned close to him.
I looked at Jonathan.
"Find Meridian."
He was already typing.
The boardroom had become silent.
Thirty seconds later, Jonathan turned his laptop.
A Massachusetts corporate registration page was on-screen.
Meridian Strategic Consulting.
Registered manager: Paul Mercer.
Every eye turned to Ethan's attorney.
Paul went still.
Jonathan smiled without humor.
"This morning is becoming extremely educational."
Paul closed his folder.
"I advise my client that this meeting should adjourn."
"Which client?" I asked. "Ethan or Meridian?"
He didn't answer.
Howard stood.
"This meeting is suspended."
Ethan slammed his hand onto the table.
"No."
Everyone stopped.
He looked around.
"We are voting."
"No, we're not," Howard said.
"If we delay, Daniel will bury this."
I slowly stood.
"Bury what?"
Ethan's mask finally cracked.
"Everything your father did."
Claire whispered, "Ethan, stop."
He ignored her.
"Your father wasn't the man you think he was."
"Neither are you."
"He stole from my family."
I frowned.
"What?"
Ethan's breathing changed.
For the first time, this didn't look rehearsed.
This looked personal.
"My father built the technology that made Bennett Capital its first fortune."
I looked at Rachel.
She was confused too.
Ethan continued.
"Your father cut him out."
"Your father was an accountant."
"That's what you were told."
Claire grabbed Ethan's arm.
"Don't."
He pulled away.
"My mother spent twenty years trying to prove it. She died broke while your family bought another house."
I stared at him.
"So this is revenge?"
His eyes burned.
"This is restitution."
"You slept with my wife for restitution?"
He flinched.
Claire looked down.
I stepped closer to the table.
"You used my daughter for restitution?"
"No."
"I heard you."
"That wasn't about hurting her."
"What was it about?"
"Protecting what belongs to her."
I laughed.
"Lily does not need protection from me."
Ethan's expression shifted.
And I realized he knew something else.
Something he believed would change everything.
He reached into his briefcase.
Claire whispered, "Please don't."
He placed a laboratory report on the table.
My name was printed at the top.
Then Lily's.
I stared at the words.
PATERNITY ANALYSIS.
My heart stopped.
"No."
Claire started crying.
I looked at her.
"No."
She covered her mouth.
May you like
I couldn't make myself pick up the paper.
Ethan said quietly, "Daniel, Lily isn't biologically yours."
