Chapter 4: The Man From My Past

I stared at Graham Vale’s name until the letters blurred.

Five years.

Five years since I had watched that man walk out of Hawthorne Capital carrying a cardboard box and promising my father we would regret humiliating him.

Now his name was sitting on my phone.

Connected to Margaret.

Connected to Harbor Point.

Connected to the documents that could destroy Whitmore Design.

“Claire?””

Ethan’s voice pulled me back.

I locked my phone.

“Who is Graham Vale?”” he asked.

Margaret made a sound behind us.

Tiny.

Almost nothing.

But I heard it.

So did Richard.

He turned toward his wife.

“You know that name.””

Margaret shook her head too quickly.

“No.””

I watched her carefully.

“Margaret.””

“I said no.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

“I’m not afraid.””

Richard held up the bank documents.

“You forged my signature, put our home up as collateral, and now a man connected to Claire’s company appears in the middle of a corporate leak.””

His voice cracked.

“Stop lying to me.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

“I was fixing things!””

“By forging my signature?””

“By keeping your company alive!””

Richard stepped backward as if she had struck him.

Vanessa whispered, “Mom, what did you do?””

Margaret pointed at Richard.

“Your father did nothing while the company bled money. Every month he came home pretending everything was under control.””

“I was restructuring,” Richard said.

“You were failing.””

The cruelty in her voice silenced everyone.

Then she looked at me.

“And she knows exactly how this works.””

“No,” I said.

“Don’t bring me into your marriage.””

“You run an investment company. Don’t pretend you’ve never made ruthless decisions.””

“Ruthless and criminal are different words.””

Her eyes narrowed.

Ethan stepped beside me.

“Claire, tell us who Graham is.””

I looked at Richard.

“Do you have somewhere private?””

He gestured toward the study.

We returned inside.

Richard closed the door.

Margaret remained standing.

I didn’t.

I sat on the edge of a chair because suddenly I was twenty-six again, standing beside my father in a hospital corridor while Graham Vale tried to force him out of his own company.

“Graham was an executive at Hawthorne Capital,” I said.

“What happened?”” Ethan asked.

“He was brilliant. Charming. Extremely good at making people believe his interests were their interests.””

Margaret looked away.

I continued.

“My father trusted him.””

“How much?”” Richard asked.

“Enough to make him chief strategy officer.””

Richard frowned.

“And then?””

“We discovered Graham had been using confidential investment information for personal deals. He was feeding information to outside partners and taking hidden compensation.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Did he go to prison?””

“No. The evidence was complicated. We fired him, sued him, recovered part of the money, and settled several claims.””

Ethan studied me.

“You said he nearly destroyed your father’s company.””

“He did more than damage the balance sheet.””

My throat tightened.

“My father had built Hawthorne Capital over thirty years. Graham made him question every person around him.””

I remembered Dad sitting alone in his office after midnight.

Not angry.

Broken.

He had asked me one question.

How did I not see him?

Six months later, Dad suffered a heart attack.

He recovered initially.

Then complications followed.

He died the next year.

I had never blamed Graham for my father’s death.

Not literally.

But some wounds didn’t appear on financial statements.

Richard turned to Margaret.

“How do you know him?””

“I don’t.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“What did you find?””

“Graham’s consulting company sent the files.””

“Directly?””

“Through two intermediaries. But yes.””

“Can you prove it?””

“We’re close.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Anything else?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“His company received a payment three months ago.””

“From whom?””

Daniel told me.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Ethan stood.

“Claire?””

I looked at Richard.

“The payment came from Whitmore Strategic Holdings.””

Richard frowned.

“We don’t have a company called Whitmore Strategic Holdings.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Vanessa whispered, “Mom.””

Richard’s face changed.

“You created a shell company?””

Margaret grabbed her handbag.

“I’m leaving.””

Richard blocked the door.

“No.””

“Move.””

“Did you pay Graham Vale?””

“Move, Richard.””

“Answer me!””

She shoved his shoulder.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Mom!””

“Everyone stop!””

Margaret’s voice cracked through the room.

For the first time that evening, she looked less like an arrogant woman protecting her status and more like someone trapped inside a burning building.

“Yes!””

Silence.

She breathed hard.

“Yes, I paid him.””

Richard’s face went gray.

“How much?””

“Two hundred thousand.””

Vanessa gasped.

“Where did you get two hundred thousand dollars?””

Margaret looked at the floor.

Richard lifted the bank documents.

“The loan.””

She didn’t answer.

“Oh my God.””

Richard sat down.

“You borrowed against our assets to pay him.””

“He promised he could guarantee Harbor Point.””

“You bribed someone?””

“No!””

“What do you call it?””

“Consulting.””

I almost laughed.

“Graham always liked that word.””

Margaret glared at me.

“He told me everyone does it.””

“Graham tells people whatever they need to hear.””

“He had information.””

“Stolen information.””

“I didn’t know that!””

“Did you ask?””

She fell silent.

That was the answer.

Richard looked shattered.

“What happens now?””

I was about to respond when someone knocked on the study door.

We all froze.

The door opened.

The man who had served Richard was gone.

In his place stood an elderly housekeeper.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

“Yes?””

“There’s another gentleman outside.””

Richard frowned.

“Who?””

“He says he has an appointment with Mrs. Whitmore.””

Every eye turned toward Margaret.

Her face lost all color.

“What gentleman?”” Ethan asked.

May you like

The housekeeper swallowed.

“He said his name is Graham Vale.””
