Chapter 1: The Dinner Invitation

“Is this really what you’re wearing?””

Those were the first words Margaret Whitmore said to me when she opened the door.

Not hello.

Not welcome.

Not even my name.

Her eyes traveled slowly from my cream blouse to my black pants, then stopped at the small leather flats on my feet.

I smiled.

“Yes. I hope that’s okay.””

Margaret’s lips tightened.

Behind her, the Whitmore house glowed with warm golden light. Crystal chandeliers hung above polished marble floors. Somewhere deeper inside, soft piano music floated through hidden speakers.

Everything looked expensive.

Everything was designed to make visitors notice that it was expensive.

My boyfriend, Ethan, stepped forward.

“Mom.””

“What?”” Margaret said innocently.

“I was only asking.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Claire, you look beautiful.””

I squeezed his hand.

“I’m fine.””

That seemed to disappoint Margaret more than if I had become angry.

She moved aside.

“Well. Come in.””

I had been dating Ethan Whitmore for eleven months.

He was kind, funny, stubborn, and completely different from the family I had heard about.

Ethan worked as an architect in Boston. We had met in a coffee shop when he accidentally knocked my tea onto my laptop.

He had nearly had a heart attack.

I had laughed.

Three hours later, we were still talking.

But somehow, despite meeting my friends and spending countless weekends together, Ethan had kept postponing the moment when I would meet his parents.

Now I understood why.

His father, Richard, rose from a leather chair when we entered the living room.

“Claire.””

He shook my hand.

His grip was firm, his smile professional.

“So you’re the mystery woman.””

“I suppose I am.””

Ethan’s younger sister, Vanessa, remained seated on the sofa.

She glanced at my clothes.

Then at my handbag.

Then at my shoes.

I saw the judgment happen in real time.

“Cute bag,” Vanessa said.

“Thank you.””

“What brand is it?””

“No idea.””

She blinked.

“You don’t know?””

“It was a gift.””

Vanessa exchanged a glance with Margaret.

The kind of glance people think you don’t notice.

I noticed.

I simply didn’t react.

Dinner was served twenty minutes later.

The table looked like something from a luxury magazine. Silver cutlery. Crystal glasses. Fresh flowers arranged between tall candles.

Margaret sat directly across from me.

“So, Claire,” she began, “Ethan says you work in business.””

“I do.””

“What exactly do you do?””

“I work with several companies.””

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

“That sounds mysterious.””

“It’s mostly boring.””

“Administrative work?”” Margaret asked.

“Sometimes.””

Ethan glanced at me.

He knew exactly what I was doing.

Or rather, what I wasn’t doing.

I wasn’t lying.

I simply wasn’t volunteering information.

Margaret lifted her wineglass.

“And your family?””

“My father passed away several years ago. My mother lives in Vermont.””

“I’m sorry,” Richard said.

“Thank you.””

Margaret continued.

“Was your father in business too?””

“Yes.””

“Successful?””

Ethan put down his fork.

“Mom.””

“What? I’m making conversation.””

I met Margaret’s eyes.

“He did well.””

She nodded slowly, apparently interpreting my answer however she wanted.

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“So where do you live?””

“Back Bay.””

Her eyebrows rose.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Renting?””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

The table became strangely quiet.

Margaret recovered first.

“Ethan mentioned you had an apartment.””

“A home,” Ethan corrected.

Margaret ignored him.

“Back Bay is expensive.””

“I’ve heard.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You’ve heard?””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Vanessa, enough.””

But Vanessa shrugged.

“I’m just curious. Ethan has always dated ambitious women.””

There it was.

The first real insult.

Delivered with a smile.

I took a sip of water.

“And now he’s dating Claire,” Margaret said.

Ethan stared at his mother.

“Meaning?””

Margaret delicately cut her salmon.

“Meaning Claire seems very… grounded.””

Vanessa covered a smile with her napkin.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

I could have ended it then.

I could have told them.

I could have watched their expressions change.

But I had spent enough years around wealthy people to know something important.

Money changes how people treat you.

Sometimes the only way to discover who they really are is to let them believe you don’t have any.

So I smiled.

“Grounded sounds nice.””

Margaret studied me.

For the first time, irritation flashed across her face.

She wanted me embarrassed.

She wanted me defensive.

Instead, I asked Richard about architecture.

Dinner continued.

Then dessert arrived.

Margaret placed her spoon beside her plate.

“Claire, may I be candid?””

Ethan groaned.

“Mom, please don’t.””

“I’m speaking to Claire.””

I folded my hands.

“Go ahead.””

Margaret leaned back.

“My son has worked extremely hard to build his life. His career is finally taking off. He needs someone beside him who understands the world he’s entering.””

“Margaret,” Richard warned.

But she continued.

“Someone with connections. Social confidence. Ambition.””

Ethan pushed his chair back.

“That’s enough.””

I touched his arm.

“Ethan.””

“No, Claire.””

His face was red.

“She invited you here and spent the entire night interviewing you like you’re applying for a job.””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“I’m protecting my son.””

“From what?””

Her eyes flicked toward me.

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I stood.

“Thank you for dinner.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Claire—”

“It’s okay.””

I turned to Margaret.

“The salmon was wonderful.””

She seemed almost confused by my politeness.

Then I picked up my bag and walked toward the front door.

Ethan followed me outside.

Cold evening air brushed my face.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered.

“You warned me.””

“Not enough.””

I kissed his cheek.

“Call me tomorrow.””

Then I reached into my bag and pressed the button on my key.

Behind us, an engine came alive.

Not the quiet hum of an ordinary sedan.

A deep, sharp roar rolled across the circular driveway.

Ethan smiled despite himself.

Inside the house, Vanessa appeared at the window.

Then Margaret.

Then Richard.

I walked toward the black Lamborghini parked beneath the trees.

Vanessa’s mouth fell open.

Margaret stepped closer to the glass.

I opened the driver’s door.

And just before I climbed inside, Ethan’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His smile disappeared.

“Claire.””

Something in his voice stopped me.

“What?””

He slowly turned the phone toward me.

There was an email on the screen.

From his father.

The subject line contained two words that made my stomach tighten.

*Hawthorne Acquisition.*

May you like

Ethan stared at me.

“Claire… why does my father have your last name in a confidential acquisition file?””
