Chapter 8

Helena is taken into police custody before she says more.

Carmine wants answers immediately.

Ruiz refuses to let him interfere.

“She came to us voluntarily.”

“She came to my gate.”

“And now she has counsel.”

“She said Sofia recorded Adrian confessing.”

“I heard.”

“Where is the recording?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

Carmine hates waiting.

But this time he does it.

He stays with Leo.

He makes breakfast.

Badly.

Leo stares at the burned toast.

“Rosa makes it better.”

“I know.”

“Helena made it better too.”

Carmine looks at him.

Leo goes quiet.

“You can say good things about her.”

Leo looks surprised.

“She did bad things.”

“Yes.”

“But she made good pancakes.”

“Both can be true.”

Leo thinks.

“That’s confusing.”

“People are.”

At noon, Samuel arrives with news.

“Helena made a deal to cooperate.”

“With prosecutors?”

“Discussions are ongoing.”

“What did she give them?”

“A location.”

Carmine stands.

“What location?”

“Adrian kept a private safe in an apartment downtown.”

“Apartment?”

“Leased through a shell company.”

“Did Helena stay there?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know the combination?”

“Yes.”

Police search it.

Inside they find cash, jewelry, forged identity documents, and another archive of leverage files.

But no confession recording.

Then they find a small digital recorder.

Broken.

Memory card missing.

Helena claims Adrian destroyed it years ago after failing to locate Sofia’s original copy.

Carmine feels rage and disappointment.

“So we’re back where we started.”

“Not exactly,” Samuel says.

“Why?”

“Helena says Sofia made two recordings.”

Carmine looks at him.

“One on a digital recorder.”

“And the other?”

“She doesn’t know.”

“Then how does she know it exists?”

“Adrian told her.”

According to Helena, Adrian visited Sofia that night intending to pressure her into surrendering evidence.

Sofia secretly recorded the conversation.

Adrian realized midway through.

He took one recorder.

But Sofia laughed at him.

She told him he was too late.

There was another copy.

Adrian spent years trying to find it.

“He thought it was in the house,” Carmine says.

“Yes.”

“That’s why Helena searched Sofia’s room.”

“Yes.”

“And why she married me?”

Samuel pauses.

“Helena says Adrian introduced the idea.”

Carmine gives a bitter laugh.

“Of course.”

“He knew you met Helena at the foundation gala.”

“Wait.”

Carmine looks up.

“I didn’t meet her randomly?”

“No.”

Samuel’s face is grim.

“Adrian arranged her invitation.”

Carmine remembers that night.

Helena in a blue dress.

Laughing at his terrible joke.

Pretending not to know who he was.

Every memory changes shape.

“She targeted me.”

“Yes.”

“From the beginning.”

“It appears so.”

Carmine walks to the window.

“How much did she get paid?”

“Helena claims it wasn’t supposed to become marriage.”

“What was it supposed to be?”

“She was supposed to get close enough to access the house.”

“Then?”

“She says she fell in love with the lifestyle.”

Carmine almost laughs.

“Not me.”

Samuel says nothing.

“Say it.”

“She says she did develop feelings for you.”

Carmine turns.

“And that made starving my son difficult?”

Samuel sighs.

“She claims Adrian pushed the Westbridge plan.”

“She still did it.”

“Yes.”

“She scratched her own car.”

“Yes.”

“She locked Leo away.”

“Yes.”

“She threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“Then feelings don’t matter.”

Samuel nods.

“No.”

At 3:00 p.m., Ruiz calls.

“We need you at the estate.”

“Why?”

“We think we know where Sofia put the second recording.”

Carmine drives back with Daniel.

Police are already in the sunroom.

The piano has been moved.

The bench removed.

A forensic technician points at the underside of the piano.

“There’s an old repair cavity.”

Carmine remembers.

Sofia’s piano had been damaged during a move years ago.

A craftsman replaced part of the lower panel.

Technicians remove it.

Inside is nothing.

Carmine’s hope collapses.

Then Leo’s voice comes from the doorway.

“That’s not Mommy’s hiding place.”

Everyone turns.

Carmine frowns.

“What?”

Leo walks to the piano.

“Mommy showed me when I was little.”

“You remember?”

“A little.”

He presses one decorative wooden piece near the left leg.

It does not move.

He presses another.

A tiny panel springs open.

Inside is a folded silk handkerchief.

And a memory card.

Carmine stares.

Leo smiles faintly.

“Mommy called it the secret tooth.”

The forensic specialist copies the card.

There is one audio file.

Dated the night before Sofia died.

Carmine sits.

Ruiz warns him.

“This may be difficult.”

“Play it.”

Sofia’s voice.

Weak.

But sharp.

“Close the door, Adrian.”

A door closes.

Adrian:

“You look terrible.”

Sofia:

“Cancer does that.”

Adrian:

“You asked me here.”

Sofia:

“To give you one last chance.”

Silence.

Adrian:

“For what?”

Sofia:

“To tell Carmine what you’ve been doing.”

Adrian laughs.

“You think he’ll listen to you now?”

“He listens to me.”

“He pities you.”

Carmine’s face tightens.

Sofia does not react.

“I have the invoices.”

“So?”

“I have Danielle’s records.”

“She’s a disgruntled employee.”

“I have the shell-company registrations.”

Long silence.

Then Adrian’s voice changes.

“What do you want?”

“The money returned.”

“Impossible.”

“You stole from a pediatric cancer fund.”

“I borrowed.”

“You stole.”

“I moved money.”

“To yourself.”

“I was building something.”

“Your own control.”

Adrian sighs.

“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.”

“No. Just you.”

Despite everything, Carmine almost laughs.

That was Sofia.

Adrian becomes angry.

“You think Carmine deserves everything?”

“This isn’t about Carmine.”

“It’s always about Carmine.”

There it is.

The grievance.

The obsession.

“He got the chair. The shares. Grandfather’s approval. You.”

Sofia’s voice softens.

“I was never something to win.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No. I know exactly what you mean.”

A chair scrapes.

Adrian says:

“Give me the evidence.”

“No.”

“You’re dying.”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do with it?”

“Make sure the truth survives me.”

Silence.

Then Adrian says something that chills the room.

“You’re going to leave Carmine alone with a child and a collapsing company.”

“He won’t be alone.”

“He’ll break.”

“No.”

“He signs whatever is put in front of him when he’s overwhelmed.”

Carmine closes his eyes.

Years.

Adrian had been planning around that weakness for years.

Sofia answers:

“Then maybe I’ll leave him a reminder to read.”

A pause.

Adrian:

“Where’s the trust amendment?”

Sofia:

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere you’ll never touch.”

“Leo’s shares belong with the family.”

“Leo is the family.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes. Control.”

Then a sharp sound.

Carmine sits forward.

Ruiz raises a hand.

Another sound.

Sofia coughs.

Adrian says:

“Give me the recorder.”

Sofia laughs weakly.

“You’re standing too close to it.”

Noise.

A struggle.

Not violent enough to tell exactly what happened.

Then Sofia:

“Get out.”

Adrian:

“Give it to me.”

“Get out.”

A nurse’s voice appears in the distance.

Adrian leaves.

The recording continues.

Sofia breathes heavily.

Then whispers:

“If Carmine hears this…”

A long pause.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”

Carmine covers his mouth.

Her next words break him.

“I was trying to protect your last days with me from becoming another war.”

The recording ends.

Nobody speaks.

Finally Ruiz says:

“This gives us direct evidence of financial crimes and attempted concealment.”

“Not murder.”

“No.”

Carmine nods.

Oddly, he feels relief.

Adrian betrayed Sofia.

Intimidated her.

Tried to steal evidence.

But he did not cause her death.

At least there is that.

Then Daniel enters.

“Sir.”

Carmine looks up.

“What?”

“Adrian called the main estate.”

“From where?”

“Unknown.”

“What did he say?”

Daniel hesitates.

“He wants to speak to Leo.”

Carmine stands.

“No.”

“He says he’ll surrender if Leo speaks to him first.”

“No.”

Ruiz agrees.

“We don’t use children as negotiators.”

Daniel nods.

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“He said Leo has something that belongs to him.”

Carmine’s expression hardens.

“What?”

Daniel hands over a transcript from the recorded call.

Adrian’s exact words:

Tell Carmine the boy took my key at Christmas. I want it back.

Carmine looks at Leo.

Leo’s face changes.

“Leo?”

The boy reaches slowly into the pocket of his hoodie.

Everyone stares.

Leo pulls out a small silver key.

“I forgot.”

Carmine kneels.

“Where did you get that?”

“Uncle Adrian dropped it.”

“When?”

“Christmas.”

“Why did you keep it?”

Leo looks guilty.

“It had a lion on it.”

The key is engraved with a lion.

Samuel examines it.

“This isn’t a house key.”

Ruiz looks closer.

“Safe-deposit key?”

Daniel checks the markings.

“Could be.”

Carmine looks at Leo.

“Did Adrian know you took it?”

Leo shakes his head.

“Not then.”

“How does he know now?”

Leo’s eyes widen.

“I told Helena.”

“When?”

“A long time ago.”

Carmine understands.

Helena told Adrian.

And suddenly Adrian wants the key badly enough to surrender.

Which means whatever it opens may be more important than everything police have found so far.
