Chapter 6

The little girl’s name is Ava.
Police learn that before midnight.
Ava Reynolds.
Six years old.
Her mother is Danielle Reynolds.
Danielle used to work at Bellini Development.
Carmine remembers the name.
Barely.
“She was in finance.”
Rachel nods.
“Senior accounting analyst.”
“When did she leave?”
“About six years ago.”
“Why?”
Rachel looks uncomfortable.
“She was terminated.”
“By who?”
“Adrian.”
Carmine looks at Samuel.
“When exactly?”
Rachel checks archived records.
“Two weeks after Sofia opened her internal inquiry into foundation vendors.”
Carmine feels another piece click into place.
“Find Danielle.”
Police already have.
She lives forty minutes outside the city.
Detective Ruiz meets Carmine and Samuel there the next morning, but makes one thing clear.
“You do not confront her.”
“I’m not here to confront anyone.”
“You’re here because she agreed to speak only after hearing your name.”
That surprises him.
Danielle opens the door herself.
She is in her late thirties.
Tired eyes.
Guarded expression.
She looks at Carmine for a long time.
“You look older.”
“So do you.”
Ruiz gives him a warning look.
Danielle almost smiles.
“Still charming.”
They sit in a modest living room.
Ava is not there.
“She’s with my sister,” Danielle explains.
Carmine looks at a photograph of Ava.
Same little girl.
Same face.
“Why does Adrian have pictures of your daughter?”
Danielle’s expression hardens.
“Because she’s his.”
Silence.
Carmine leans back.
“Adrian has a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since before she was born.”
Carmine looks at Samuel.
Nobody in the family knows this.
“Why hide her?”
Danielle laughs without humor.
“Ask him.”
“Tell me.”
“He said a child outside marriage would damage his standing with your grandfather.”
“My grandfather died eight years ago.”
“I know.”
“So why keep hiding her after that?”
“Because secrets become habits.”
Danielle looks at Ruiz.
“Am I in trouble?”
“No,” Ruiz says. “We’re trying to find Adrian and Helena Bellini.”
Danielle’s eyes flick toward Carmine.
“They’re together?”
“You knew about Helena?”
Danielle looks down.
“I knew there was a woman.”
“How?”
“Adrian talks when he’s angry.”
“When did you last speak to him?”
“Three days ago.”
Carmine leans forward.
“What did he want?”
“My help.”
“With what?”
“He wanted old accounting credentials.”
“Why?”
“He said he needed archived foundation files.”
“Did you give them?”
“No.”
Danielle’s jaw tightens.
“He threatened to stop paying Ava’s school tuition.”
Carmine looks at Samuel.
“Does Adrian pay?”
“Sometimes.”
Danielle laughs bitterly.
“He likes control more than fatherhood.”
Ruiz asks, “Did he mention leaving the country?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
“Where?”
“He said Switzerland.”
That matches the airport ticket.
“Did he mention Helena?”
“He called her reckless.”
Carmine’s attention sharpens.
“What did he say?”
“That she had pushed too hard with the boy.”
“The boy being Leo?”
“I assumed.”
Danielle looks at Carmine.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For not calling you.”
“You knew?”
“Not about the abuse.”
“About what?”
Danielle hesitates.
“Years ago, Sofia came to me.”
Carmine stops breathing.
“What?”
“She suspected foundation fraud.”
“Why you?”
“Because I processed vendor payments.”
“What did you tell her?”
“The truth.”
Danielle’s eyes fill slightly.
“Adrian was overriding approvals.”
“Then why were you fired?”
“Because Sofia confronted him too soon.”
Carmine looks away.
“She trusted him.”
“She loved the family.”
“Did you give Sofia evidence?”
“Yes.”
“Was it on the flash drive?”
“Probably.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
Danielle’s voice sharpens.
“I tried.”
Carmine turns back.
“What?”
“I requested three meetings.”
“I never saw them.”
“Adrian controlled your executive schedule when Rachel was on maternity leave.”
Carmine remembers.
Six years ago.
Rachel had been gone for four months.
Adrian’s assistant coordinated most internal access.
Danielle continues.
“Then I received a severance agreement and a warning.”
“From Adrian?”
“From company legal.”
Samuel frowns.
“Who signed it?”
Danielle gives him a name.
“Martin Cole.”
Samuel’s face changes.
Carmine sees it.
“Who is Martin Cole?”
“Former deputy general counsel.”
“Former?”
“Retired four years ago.”
Danielle walks to a closet.
She returns with a folder.
“I kept everything.”
Inside is the termination agreement.
The warning letter.
Copies of invoices.
And one handwritten note from Sofia.
Thank you for telling me the truth. I’ll make sure Carmine knows.
Carmine has to stop reading.
Danielle watches him.
“She loved you.”
“I know.”
“She was afraid of what this would do to your family.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Danielle’s voice softens.
“I don’t think you do.”
Carmine looks at her.
“She was terrified that if she accused Adrian without perfect proof, you would lose your cousin while losing her.”
Carmine shuts his eyes.
Sofia carried all of it alone.
He hates that.
He hates himself for not seeing.
Ruiz asks Danielle about the phone found in Helena’s car.
Danielle studies the photo.
“That’s Adrian’s.”
“Why is Ava the lock screen?”
“He uses different phones for different parts of his life.”
“How many?”
“At least three.”
“Can you contact him?”
Danielle hesitates.
“Yes.”
Ruiz leans forward.
“How?”
“He calls Ava every Friday.”
Today is Friday.
At 4:00 p.m., police set up a controlled call.
Danielle sits at her kitchen table.
Ruiz records legally with Danielle’s consent under applicable procedures.
Carmine waits in another room.
At 4:17, the phone rings.
Danielle answers.
“Hello?”
Adrian’s voice.
“Put Ava on.”
“She’s not here.”
“Where is she?”
“With my sister.”
“Why?”
“Because police came.”
Silence.
Then:
“What did you tell them?”
“Nothing.”
“You better mean that.”
Danielle looks at Ruiz.
“Why is your phone in Helena’s car?”
Another silence.
Adrian’s voice changes.
“What?”
“Police found it.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Where are you?”
“None of your business.”
“Are you with Helena?”
Adrian curses.
Then:
“Listen to me. If anyone asks, you haven’t heard from me.”
“Why?”
“Because Carmine is losing his mind.”
In the other room, Carmine’s jaw tightens.
Danielle continues.
“He says you stole money.”
“He says whatever makes him look innocent.”
“What about Leo?”
A longer pause.
“That kid is the reason everything blew up.”
Carmine feels rage rise.
Danielle’s voice trembles.
“What did you do to him?”
“Nothing.”
“Helena did.”
“That was her problem.”
“You knew.”
“I knew she was trying to get him sent away.”
“Why?”
Adrian exhales.
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.”
“He controls shares.”
“He’s eight.”
“He controls shares.”
Carmine closes his eyes.
There it is.
No shame.
No hesitation.
A child reduced to voting power.
Danielle asks, “Where’s Helena?”
Adrian does not answer.
“Adrian?”
His voice lowers.
“She made a mistake.”
Carmine looks at Ruiz.
“What mistake?”
Danielle asks.
“She tried to keep leverage.”
“What leverage?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Is she hurt?”
Adrian becomes impatient.
“I have to go.”
“Wait. Ava misses you.”
That stops him.
For a second, the father beneath the criminal appears.
“Tell her I love her.”
“Come tell her yourself.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because Carmine will destroy me.”
Carmine whispers, “You did that yourself.”
Adrian continues.
“Danielle, there’s a storage unit.”
Ruiz straightens.
“What?”
Danielle asks.
“If something happens, there’s money for Ava.”
“Where?”
“I’ll text you.”
“Why are you telling me now?”
“Because I don’t know who Helena already talked to.”
“What does that mean?”
The call disconnects.
Minutes later, a text arrives.
A storage facility address.
Unit 314.
Code.
Police obtain access.
Carmine is not allowed inside until the unit is cleared.
Then Ruiz calls him.
“You need to see this.”
The storage room is filled with boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Cash.
Passports.
One passport has Adrian’s photo under another name.
Another has Helena’s photo.
There are also copies of medical records.
Leo’s.
Carmine opens a box labeled BELLINI FAMILY.
Inside are files on him.
Sofia.
Leo.
Board members.
Private weaknesses.
Divorces.
Affairs.
Debts.
Adrian had been collecting leverage for years.
Samuel pulls out a folder.
“Carmine.”
Inside is a copy of Sofia’s original letter.
Not the hidden one.
A different letter.
Addressed to Adrian.
Adrian,
I know what you did.
If you do not tell Carmine yourself, I will.
The date is seven days before Sofia died.
Carmine’s stomach twists.
“She confronted him.”
Ruiz finds another document.
A hospital visitor log.
Adrian visited Sofia the night before she died.
Carmine stares.
“I was there.”
“You left for two hours,” Samuel reminds him gently.
He remembers.
Leo had a fever.
Carmine went home to settle him.
Adrian volunteered to sit with Sofia.
When Carmine returned, Sofia was asleep.
Adrian was gone.
Ruiz watches him carefully.
“Do not jump to conclusions.”
“I’m not.”
But his mind is.
Then an officer calls from the back of the unit.
“Detective.”
They gather around an open metal case.
Inside are multiple prepaid phones.
One begins ringing.
Everyone freezes.
Ruiz signals for silence.
She answers.
“Hello?”
Helena’s voice erupts through the speaker.
“Adrian?”
Ruiz says nothing.
“Adrian, answer me.”
Helena is crying.
Real panic.
“He left me.”
Ruiz speaks.
“Helena, this is Detective Ruiz.”
Silence.
Then a sharp breath.
“Where are you?”
Helena whispers.
“I need protection.”
“From Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“The blood in your car?”
“Not mine.”
Ruiz looks at Carmine.
“Whose?”
Helena starts sobbing.
“I don’t know.”
“Where are you?”
“I’ll tell you if Carmine agrees to something.”
Ruiz’s face hardens.
“This is not a negotiation.”
“I know what happened to Sofia.”
Carmine steps forward.
Ruiz raises a hand to stop him.
Helena continues.
“Adrian told me everything.”
Carmine cannot stay silent.
“Helena.”
She gasps.
Then laughs weakly.
“Of course you’re there.”
“Tell me where you are.”
“Promise you won’t let them arrest me.”
“I can’t promise that.”
“Then I’m hanging up.”
“Helena.”
“What?”
Carmine’s voice becomes quiet.
“Did Adrian hurt Sofia?”
Silence.
Long enough that Carmine hears his own heartbeat.
Then Helena whispers:
May you like
“Not the way you think.”
And the line goes dead.
