Chapter 5: My Mother’s Daughter

I reached the bridal suite while paramedics were fastening an oxygen mask over my mother’s face.

“Everybody out.””

One paramedic looked at me.

“Mr. Cole, she needs to go to the hospital.””

“She will. I need thirty seconds.””

Eleanor’s eyes opened.

“Mom.””

She turned toward me.

Weakness disappeared from her expression the moment she saw my face.

“You know.””

“Victoria heard you.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I leaned closer.

“Is Claire your daughter?””

Silence.

“Mom.””

“Yes.””

One word.

That was all it took.

I stumbled backward.

Victoria stood near the window, arms wrapped around herself.

Margaret held Lucy’s hand across the room while Milo slept in a portable bassinet hotel staff had brought upstairs.

I looked at Claire’s photograph on my phone.

The woman I had loved.

The woman I had spent eleven years hating.

My mother’s daughter.

My half sister.

My stomach turned.

“No.””

Eleanor pulled away the oxygen mask.

“Not biologically.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She is legally my daughter. Not biologically.””

“Explain it.””

The paramedic tried to intervene.

“Mr. Cole—”

“Please.””

Something in my voice made him stop.

Eleanor swallowed.

“Rebecca Bennett worked for your father.””

“We know.””

“She discovered the financial fraud.””

“And?””

“She threatened to expose him.””

“Thomas told me that.””

“What Thomas doesn’t know is that Rebecca had a child with her when she disappeared.””

“Claire.””

“Yes.””

“But you said Rebecca wasn’t her biological mother.””

“She wasn’t.””

My mother’s eyes filled with shame.

“Claire was abandoned as an infant. Rebecca adopted her privately.””

I struggled to follow.

“So how are you her mother?””

“Because the adoption was never completed.””

Margaret suddenly spoke.

“That isn’t the whole truth.””

Eleanor glared at her.

Margaret stepped forward.

“You signed Claire’s guardianship papers.””

I looked between them.

“When?””

“After Rebecca vanished,” Margaret said.

My mother whispered, “Claire was three.””

I felt dizzy.

“You became her guardian?””

“For eight months.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“You were a child yourself.””

I calculated quickly.

I had been seven.

Fragments surfaced.

A little girl in our old Connecticut house.

Dark curls.

A yellow raincoat.

Someone laughing behind the kitchen door.

I had always assumed she was a neighbor.

“Oh my God.””

Eleanor saw recognition in my face.

“You remember her.””

“The girl with the red bicycle.””

My mother started crying.

“Yes.””

Claire.

I had known Claire before Boston.

Before college.

Before either of us remembered enough to recognize each other.

“What happened after eight months?””

“Charles discovered what I’d done.””

“What did he do?””

“He threatened to take you away from me unless I surrendered guardianship.””

Margaret shook her head.

“You surrendered Claire to strangers.””

“I was terrified!””

“She was three years old.””

“I had Nathan to protect!””

The room went silent.

That sentence explained my mother better than anything else ever had.

Every cruelty had been dressed as protection.

I stared at her.

“Who took Claire?””

“A family in Massachusetts.””

“The Bennetts?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Rebecca’s brother and his wife. They raised her as their own.””

“And Rebecca?””

My mother looked away.

“We never found her.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“That’s another lie.””

Eleanor went still.

I turned toward Margaret.

“What?””

“Rebecca was found.””

“When?””

“Six years later.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

My mother whispered, “Margaret.””

“You’ve lied enough.””

Margaret faced me.

“Rebecca came back when Claire was nine.””

“Why didn’t Claire know?””

“Because Charles paid Rebecca to disappear again.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Rebecca still had evidence.””

“What happened to her?””

“No one knows.””

I looked at Eleanor.

She wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Then another thought struck me.

“Milo’s mother.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Rebecca had another daughter years later.””

“My father’s daughter?””

“Yes.””

“So that part was true.””

“Yes.””

I stared at Milo.

My father’s son.

My half brother.

But something still didn’t fit.

“Why would Claire risk everything to protect him?””

Margaret looked toward Lucy.

“Because his mother asked her to.””

“What was her name?””

“Anna.””

“Anna Bennett?””

“No.””

Margaret hesitated.

“Anna Vale.””

Thomas.

My heart stopped.

“Vale?””

“Thomas’s daughter.””

The room went silent.

“Thomas’s daughter had a child with my father?””

Margaret shook her head.

“Anna was Charles Cole’s daughter.””

“Then why Vale?””

“Because Thomas raised her.””

I sat down.

The secrets had become a maze.

Thomas had raised my father’s secret daughter.

Claire had later protected that daughter’s baby.

And my mother had spent decades trying to keep every connection buried.

Victoria approached me.

“Nathan.””

I barely looked at her.

“What?””

“We need to talk.””

“Not now.””

“Yes. Now.””

Something in her voice made me turn.

She was holding her engagement ring between two fingers.

“I knew about Claire.””

The room seemed to become perfectly still.

“What did you say?””

“Not everything.””

I stood.

“How much?””

“Your mother told me Claire was alive before you proposed.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“She said Claire was unstable. That she had tried to extort your family.””

“And you believed her?””

“I had no reason not to.””

“You had every reason to tell me.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid you would go looking for her.””

“So you helped keep her buried.””

“No.””

“That is exactly what you did.””

She flinched.

Then Lucy suddenly screamed from across the room.

“Daddy!””

We all turned.

She was beside the bassinet.

Milo’s yellow blanket lay on the floor.

The baby was gone.

The connecting door to the hotel corridor stood open.

And resting inside the empty bassinet was a single white envelope.

Across the front, someone had written:

May you like

LOCKER 317. MIDNIGHT.

COME ALONE OR YOU LOSE BOTH OF THEM.
