Chapter 14: The Last Lie
“No.””
Charles said it quietly.
Daniel walked toward him.
“Thomas confessed to everything else.””
“Thomas doesn’t confess. He rearranges blame.””
“He gave me dates.””
“Then check them.””
“He gave me Anna’s last voicemail.””
That silenced my father.
Daniel pressed play.
Anna’s frightened voice emerged.
“Daniel, Charles found me. He says I have to come with him. I don’t trust him. If I don’t call you by morning—”
The message ended.
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“That was the last time I heard her.””
Charles looked devastated.
“I was trying to save her.””
“Where did you take her?””
“A safe house.””
“Where?””
“Connecticut.””
“Then why did she die in London?””
“She didn’t.””
Silence.
Claire stared at him.
“What?””
Charles looked at Daniel.
“Anna Vale is alive.””
Daniel stumbled backward.
“No.””
“She survived.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I had told you sooner.””
“Where is she?””
“Federal protective custody.””
Daniel grabbed Charles by the shirt.
“You let me bury an empty coffin?””
Charles didn’t resist.
“I needed Thomas to believe she was dead.””
Daniel shoved him away.
“You’re all the same.””
His voice broke.
“You decide who gets to grieve. Who gets to know. Who gets to lose years.””
I understood that anger better than anyone.
I stepped beside him.
“He’s right.””
Charles looked at me.
“You don’t get to call lies protection anymore.””
My father nodded.
“I know.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Prove she’s alive.””
Charles looked at Marcus.
“Call Agent Foster.””
Marcus made the call.
Seven minutes later, a woman appeared on video.
Anna.
Alive.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Anna?””
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Daniel.””
He sat down hard on the cemetery curb.
Milo began fussing in Claire’s arms.
Anna heard him.
“Is that…”
Daniel turned the camera.
Their son.
Anna started sobbing.
“My baby.””
For several seconds, nobody else existed.
Not Thomas.
Not the money.
Not the Cole family.
Just two parents staring at the child they thought they had lost.
Daniel whispered, “Why didn’t you contact me?””
Anna wiped her face.
“Charles said Thomas was watching you.””
“You believed him?””
“I had seen Thomas’s files. He knew everywhere you went.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“When can I see you?””
“Soon.””
A federal agent beside her interrupted.
“We need to end the call.””
Anna nodded quickly.
“Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“Don’t disappear.””
He looked at Milo.
“I won’t.””
The screen went dark.
Then federal vehicles entered the cemetery.
An agent approached me.
“Mr. Cole?””
“Yes.””
“Thomas Vale is in custody.””
“On what charges?””
“For now, financial crimes, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and obstruction. More may follow as evidence is reviewed.””
Rebecca lifted the ledger.
“This will help.””
“So will I,” Charles said.
The agent stared at him.
“You’re Charles Cole?””
“My death certificate says otherwise.””
“That’s going to be a conversation.””
“For everyone.””
By sunrise, the cemetery had become a crime scene.
Thomas’s offshore transfer had been stopped.
Richard Ashford was detained for questioning before boarding a private flight.
Several Meridian accounts were frozen pending investigation.
The merger was suspended.
And my wedding was officially over.
But one question remained.
Claire.
We stood away from the others beneath an old oak tree.
Lucy slept against my shoulder.
Milo slept against Claire.
It almost looked like a family.
Almost.
“I don’t know what happens now,” I said.
Claire looked at me.
“That makes two of us.””
“I want to know Lucy.””
“You should.””
“Every day.””
Her expression became cautious.
“I won’t let you buy your way into her life.””
“I don’t want to.””
“You’re Nathan Cole.””
“I know.””
“You solve problems with money.””
“Not this one.””
She studied me.
“What do you want?””
“The truth?””
“Yes.””
“I want the years back.””
Her eyes filled.
“So do I.””
“But we can’t have them.””
“No.””
“I want to know what cereal Lucy hates. What makes her laugh. Which stuffed animal she refuses to sleep without.””
Claire smiled through tears.
“Mr. Buttons.””
“Who?””
“Purple rabbit. Missing one ear.””
I smiled.
“Good start.””
She laughed.
It was small.
But I remembered that laugh.
Boston.
Twenty-four years old.
Cheap coffee.
A ninety-dollar locket.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” I said.
Claire frowned.
“For what?””
“For believing them.””
“You were manipulated.””
“I still hated you.””
“I hated you too.””
“Fair.””
She looked down.
“Sometimes hatred was easier.””
“Than what?””
“Missing you.””
I swallowed.
Before I could answer, Victoria approached.
She stopped several feet away.
“I’m leaving.””
I nodded.
“My father will need lawyers.””
“He will.””
“I’ll cooperate with investigators.””
“Good.””
She looked at Claire.
Then Lucy.
Then me.
“I did love you.””
“I know.””
“I’m sorry that I made love another secret.””
There was nothing useful to say.
Victoria walked away.
Claire watched her.
“She’s not evil.””
“No.””
“Just afraid.””
“Fear has done enough damage in this family.””
Claire nodded.
Then Lucy stirred against my chest.
“Daddy?””
“I’m here.””
Her eyes opened halfway.
“Are you getting married?””
Claire froze.
I looked at the ruined white flower still pinned to my coat.
“No, sweetheart.””
Lucy thought about that.
“Good.””
Claire almost laughed.
“Why good?””
Lucy wrapped her arms around my neck.
“Because Mommy still has your necklace.””
Claire’s face went bright red.
“Lucy.””
“What?””
I looked at the gold locket around Claire’s neck.
The same locket Lucy had placed in my hand at the wedding.
Claire touched it instinctively.
“I gave it back to her,” I said.
Lucy yawned.
“Mommy kisses it when she thinks nobody sees.””
“Lucy!””
For the first time in twenty-four hours, I laughed.
Then my phone rang.
Federal investigators.
I answered.
“Nathan Cole.””
The agent sounded tense.
“Mr. Cole, we opened the red file recovered from Thomas Vale’s vehicle.””
“What’s inside?””
“A DNA report.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Whose?””
The answer erased my smile.
“Yours.””
My grip tightened.
“What does it say?””
May you like
A pause.
“According to this report, Charles Cole is not your biological father.””
