Chapter 12: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The man outside looked directly into the window.

Then he smiled.

Dr. Hensley.

The same man who had taught me how to calm frightened animals. The same man who had given me my first job at the Brooklyn clinic.

The man who had recommended me to Damien.

I suddenly understood how he'd known exactly where to find me.

"He's the reason I was brought to the penthouse," I whispered.

Damien nodded.

"Someone arranged it.""

Corbin looked toward Julian.

"Who is that man?""

Julian's expression was almost unreadable.

"Someone who worked for Vincent.""

"That's not an answer.""

Julian turned.

"He's Daniel's former business partner.""

My mother covered her mouth.

"Richard Hensley.""

I looked at her.

"You know him?""

"He was the lawyer who helped Daniel build the companies. He was present when we discovered Vincent's fraud.""

"Then why does he want the necklace?""

Elena looked toward the window.

"Because Richard helped create the system that hides the evidence. If the files are released, his name will be everywhere.""

Another burst of gunfire shattered the glass.

Damien pulled me farther behind the desk.

"Everyone downstairs. There's a security tunnel beneath the wine cellar.""

Corbin shook his head.

"I'm not leaving.""

Damien grabbed him.

"You're leaving.""

"Let go!""

Julian suddenly raised his weapon.

"Both of you, stop!""

The room fell silent.

Julian pointed toward the staircase.

"There's another entrance. Richard knows about the tunnel. He's probably already blocking it.""

Damien frowned.

"How do you know?""

"Because I helped him plan the attack.""

My mother stared at him.

"What?""

Julian lowered his weapon.

"I wanted the necklace. I wanted the trust. I thought if I gave Richard the evidence, he'd help me destroy Vincent's control over the family.""

Corbin laughed.

"You're both idiots.""

Julian turned toward him.

"You knew too.""

Corbin's smile faded.

"I knew Richard wanted the necklace. I didn't know he'd bring an army.""

I looked at both men.

"Did either of you ever consider asking me what I wanted?""

Neither answered.

I stood.

"I want the truth. I want my mother safe. And I want everyone who hurt my family held accountable.""

Damien looked at me.

"Then we need to get you out.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Briar—"

"Richard wants the necklace. That's why he came here. We have something he needs.""

I removed the silver pendant.

The tiny microchip rested inside.

Damien looked at it.

"You can't give that to him.""

"I'm not going to.""

I looked at Julian.

"Can the files be accessed without the original necklace?""

He hesitated.

"Yes, but only with the encryption key.""

"Then why does Richard need it?""

"Because the key unlocks the complete evidence archive. Without it, the financial records are incomplete.""

I turned toward the computer on the desk.

"Can you connect it?""

Julian nodded.

I handed him the microchip.

"Do it.""

He looked at me suspiciously.

"Why?""

"Because I'm done letting other people decide what happens to my family.""

He inserted the chip.

The screen flickered.

A password prompt appeared.

Julian typed several commands.

Then a message appeared.

*IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED.*

He turned toward me.

"Your necklace isn't enough. The archive requires a voice recording from Daniel.""

My mother stepped forward.

"I have it.""

She removed a small recorder from her handbag.

It was the same device we'd found in the bank.

Julian connected it.

A familiar voice filled the room.

"Briar. Corbin. Julian.""

My father's voice.

I covered my mouth.

"If you're hearing this, then I failed to protect you. But I left enough evidence to make sure the people responsible cannot escape.""

The recording paused.

Then Daniel continued.

"Richard Hensley was not the only person working with Vincent. Someone inside my own household was feeding him information.""

Damien went still.

The recording continued.

"The person responsible was the one I trusted to protect my children.""

My mother whispered:

"No.""

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"His name is Damien Ashworth.""

I looked at Damien.

He closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"But Damien did not know the entire plan. He believed he was helping me escape. Vincent manipulated him into revealing our location.""

My mother began crying.

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Damien, if you're listening, I forgive you. You were young. You made a terrible mistake, but I know you wanted to save us.""

Damien turned away.

Then the recording ended.

The computer screen changed.

A folder opened.

Hundreds of documents appeared.

Bank transfers. Photographs. Audio recordings. Names.

And one video file labeled:

*THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEARED.*

Julian clicked it.

The footage showed a dark road.

A black car.

A second vehicle following closely behind.

Then a man stepped out.

I recognized him immediately.

Vincent.

But the next figure made me stop breathing.

It was Dr. Hensley.

He approached the driver's side window and spoke to someone inside.

The camera zoomed in.

The person behind the wheel was my mother.

Alive.

Richard opened the car door and dragged her outside.

Then Vincent pointed a gun at Daniel.

My mother screamed.

The video cut to black.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the screen.

"That's how she survived.""

My mother nodded.

"They took me. I was held in a private medical facility for months. I escaped with help from someone who worked there.""

"Who?""

She looked at Shadow.

The dog had moved toward the computer.

He was staring at a second video file.

A recording dated six years earlier.

My mother reached for the mouse.

"Don't open that.""

I turned.

"Why?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because it shows what happened after I escaped.""

I clicked PLAY.

The footage showed a hospital corridor.

A woman in a medical gown was walking beside a nurse.

Then the camera turned toward a little girl sitting in a wheelchair.

She was perhaps eighteen months old.

A silver necklace rested around her tiny neck.

I stared.

"Who is that child?""

My mother covered her face.

Then she whispered:

"Your little sister.""

The door behind us exploded inward.

Richard Hensley walked into the room, holding a gun.

"Thank you, Briar.""

He smiled at the computer.

"You've just found the only person who can destroy everything I've spent eighteen years building.""

Damien raised his weapon.

Richard pointed his gun at my mother.

"Put it down, Ashworth.""

Damien froze.

Richard looked at me.

"Now, sweetheart, we're going to finish what your father started.""

He reached for the necklace.

And then Shadow did something none of us expected.

The dying dog launched himself at Richard's arm.

A gunshot rang through the estate.

May you like

My mother screamed.

And when Shadow fell to the floor, I saw a dark red stain spreading across his chest.
