Chapter 3: The Man Who Came Back

My father locked the office door.

That was when I knew this wasn’t about Madison anymore.

This wasn’t about a torn test.

This wasn’t about bullying.

Something much bigger had followed me into that hallway.

I stared at the photograph.

It was old.

I was maybe eight years old.

Standing outside a small house with my mother.

I didn’t remember anyone taking it.

“Who took this?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

He sat down across from me.

For the first time in my life, he looked unsure.

“Your mother never told you anything?””

“Told me what?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“About my family.””

I laughed quietly.

“My family?””

The words sounded strange.

For years, my family had just been my mother and me.

My father was a name on legal documents.

A face I barely remembered.

“You weren’t supposed to find out this way,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Find out what?””

He looked at the closed door.

Then at the windows.

Like he was checking whether someone was watching.

“There are people who have been looking for you.””

“Why?””

He was silent.

That silence scared me more than any answer.

“Dad.””

The word came out naturally.

For the first time in years.

His eyes softened.

Then he said:

“Because of who you are.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could respond, someone knocked.

The principal opened the door slightly.

“Mr. Hayes?””

My father stood immediately.

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here asking for your daughter.””

His expression changed.

“Who?””

The principal looked uncomfortable.

“She said her name is Eleanor Voss.””

My father went completely still.

I noticed.

“You know her?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The principal continued.

“She said this concerns the incident with Madison Carter.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

The principal blinked.

“No?””

“She’s not here because of the incident.””

I looked between them.

“Then why is she here?””

My father walked toward the door.

“Because she knows something about you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?””

He opened the door slightly.

Standing outside was a woman in an elegant black coat.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

Her eyes immediately found mine.

Then she smiled.

Not kindly.

Like someone who had finally found something they had been searching for.

“Hello,” she said.

My father stepped between us.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

The woman ignored him.

She looked directly at me.

“You have no idea how long people have waited for this day.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“Who are you?””

She smiled.

“My name is Eleanor Voss.””

A pause.

“And I’m the reason your father disappeared.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

But Eleanor didn’t move.

Instead, she reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

She handed it to me.

“This belongs to you.””

I looked at my father.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Eleanor smiled.

“Something your mother hid from you.””

My fingers touched the envelope.

And the moment I saw the handwriting on the front, my entire world stopped.

Because it was written by my mother.

May you like

And the message was only one sentence:

*“If you are reading this, your father has finally failed to protect you.””*
