Chapter 13: The Last Secret My Mother Left Behind
I stared at the message until the screen went dark.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.
Someone had been watching us.
Not just today.
Not just since Madison.
For years.
My father took the phone from my hand.
His expression changed as he read the message.
“This isn’t possible.””
I looked at him.
“You know who sent it.””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
For the first time, I wasn’t seeing the powerful businessman everyone else feared.
I was seeing the man who had been carrying a secret too heavy for one person.
“It’s someone I thought was gone.””
Claire’s face tightened.
“No.””
My grandfather looked at her.
“You know too?””
Claire slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
My patience disappeared.
“Everyone knows everything except me.””
My voice echoed through the room.
“My whole life has been people deciding what I can handle.””
Nobody interrupted.
“I’m done.””
I pointed at the phone.
“Who sent this?””
My father looked away.
Then Claire spoke.
“Your mother’s sister.””
I froze.
“My aunt?””
Claire nodded.
“Her name was Evelyn.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because nothing about my life made sense anymore.
“I have an aunt who has been watching me for years?””
My grandfather answered quietly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Silence.
Then my father said:
“Because she believed your mother made the wrong choice.””
“What choice?””
Claire looked at the necklace.
“The choice to let you live a normal life.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t sound like something to hate someone for.””
“It depends on what you believe.””
Claire sat down.
“Evelyn believed people like us were born with responsibilities.””
I looked at the necklace.
“And my mother didn’t?””
“No.””
Claire smiled sadly.
“Your mother believed people were born with choices.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because that sounded exactly like her.
Even though she was gone, I could still hear her voice.
Don’t let anyone tell you who you are.
My father walked toward the table.
“We need to leave.””
Claire shook her head.
“Too late.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She wanted us to come here.””
My grandfather frowned.
“What?””
Claire pointed toward the machine.
“The recording wasn’t finished.””
I looked at the device.
“But it stopped.””
Claire pressed a hidden button on the side.
A second light appeared.
The machine activated again.
My mother’s voice returned.
This time, quieter.
More serious.
“If you are hearing this part, then you have already discovered the truth.””
I held my breath.
“I need you to understand something.””
The screen showed a new image.
A picture of me as a child.
“You were never the reason they came.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then what was?””
My mother continued.
“The reason they came was because of what I discovered.””
A document appeared.
A symbol.
A map.
My grandfather stepped closer.
“What is that?””
Claire looked shocked.
“I’ve never seen that.””
My mother’s voice continued.
“There is a system hidden beneath the world’s most powerful families.””
The screen showed names.
Companies.
Organizations.
People.
“They have spent generations controlling information.””
My father whispered:
“The Voss network.””
My mother continued.
“They don’t fear power.””
A pause.
“They fear losing control.””
Then the final image appeared.
A photograph.
A young woman.
My mother.
Standing beside another person.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized him.
The man from the first photograph.
The man everyone thought was dead.
My grandfather.
But this picture was different.
It showed my grandfather holding a baby.
Me.
My hands started shaking.
My grandfather looked away.
“You knew.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew me before.””
He said nothing.
“You held me.””
His silence was the answer.
Anger rose in my chest.
“Why did you pretend you were a stranger?””
His face changed.
“Because I failed your mother.””
The room became quiet.
Before I could ask what he meant, the building shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
My father looked toward the door.
“They found us again.””
Claire stood.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“They didn’t find us.””
May you like
She looked at the necklace.
“They found her.””
