Chapter 9: The Secret Behind Noah’s Test

The DNA request form felt heavier than paper should.

I stared at Ethan’s signature.

My husband.

The man who had held my hand during the ultrasound.

The man who cried when Noah was born.

The man who now wanted proof that the child he helped create was his.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Daniel.””

He lowered his voice.

“Because Ethan is questioning paternity.””

My heart sank.

“He thinks Noah isn’t his?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“That’s what the filing suggests.””

A thousand memories rushed through my mind.

The nights Ethan placed his hand on my stomach.

The way he told everyone he couldn’t wait to be a father.

The pictures he took before Noah was born.

Was all of that fake?

Or was this just another strategy?

My father looked furious.

“He knows exactly what he’s doing.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“He is creating doubt.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

He pointed to the document.

“If he convinces the court there is uncertainty, he can delay decisions and create more pressure.””

I looked toward Ethan.

He was sitting beside his attorney.

Not looking at Noah.

Not looking at me.

Just waiting.

Like this was a business negotiation.

Not his family.

The judge returned.

The hearing continued.

Ethan’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor, given recent concerns regarding the child’s parentage, we request immediate genetic testing.””

My stomach twisted.

The judge looked at Ethan.

“Mr. Whitmore, is this your request?””

Ethan stood.

“Yes.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I simply want certainty.””

I looked at him.

Certainty.

That was the word he chose.

Not trust.

Not love.

Certainty.

The judge looked at me.

“Mrs. Morgan?””

I stood slowly.

My body still wasn’t fully healed.

But I forced myself upright.

“I have no issue with the truth being known.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“But I want the court to understand something.””

The judge nodded.

I looked directly at my husband.

“My son is not a weapon.””

The courtroom became silent.

“He is not something you use because you are losing control.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

For the first time, his mask slipped.

“You’re making this personal.””

I stared at him.

“It is personal.””

My voice shook.

“He’s our child.””

The judge ordered the test.

But before the hearing ended, Daniel requested one more piece of evidence.

“What evidence?”” the judge asked.

Daniel stood.

“A recorded conversation.””

Ethan’s attorney immediately objected.

“Objection.””

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Explain.””

Daniel opened a folder.

“This recording was obtained legally from a business security system.””

My heart raced.

“What conversation?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“One between Mr. Whitmore and his mother.””

Ethan’s face changed.

Completely.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

The recording played.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Diane’s voice.

“You need to stop pretending you love her.””

My blood ran cold.

Then Ethan answered.

“I know.””

The courtroom froze.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Diane continued.

“The trust is protected. You should have gotten access by now.””

Ethan sighed.

“I’m trying.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I already knew.

But hearing it was different.

Hearing his voice.

Hearing him admit it.

The recording continued.

Diane said:

“And the baby?””

A pause.

Then Ethan answered.

“Once everything is settled, the child gives me another connection to the family.””

My hands went cold.

Another connection.

Not son.

Not baby.

Connection.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked at me.

And for the first time since our marriage…

I saw him exactly as he was.

Not the man I loved.

Not the father I hoped he would become.

Just a man who had calculated every move.

Then Daniel leaned toward me and whispered:

“Claire, there’s one more part of the recording.””

I looked at him.

“What part?””

His expression was serious.

“The part where Ethan talks about what he planned to do after he gained control.””

I felt my heart stop.

May you like

Because whatever came next…

Was the reason he had been so desperate to take Noah from me.
