Chapter 13: The Father Who Knew the Truth
I almost refused to meet him.
After everything that happened, the last thing I wanted was another person connected to Ethan’s family bringing more chaos into my life.
I wanted peace.
I wanted Noah to grow up without constantly being surrounded by lies.
But Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Claire, I wouldn’t suggest this if it wasn’t important.””
My father stood beside me.
“Who is he?””
“Richard Whitmore,” Daniel answered.
“Ethan’s father.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Why would he suddenly want to talk?””
Daniel looked at the message again.
“Because he claims he tried to stop them.””
I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Everyone had a story.
Everyone had an explanation.
Everyone claimed they were protecting someone.
But I agreed.
Not for Ethan.
Not for his family.
For Noah.
The meeting was held at a quiet café far from the courthouse.
Richard Whitmore arrived alone.
That surprised me.
No Diane.
No Ethan.
Just an older man with tired eyes and a face that looked nothing like the confident family image Ethan always presented.
He stood when I approached.
“Claire?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at Noah.
Then back at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology came so quickly that I almost didn’t know how to respond.
“For what?””
“For not warning you sooner.””
I sat down slowly.
“Did you know?””
Richard looked down.
“Yes.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew what they were planning?””
“Not everything.””
He swallowed.
“But enough.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Richard accepted it.
“Because I was a coward.””
The honesty surprised me.
He continued.
“I spent years watching Diane control Ethan. She convinced him that love was a transaction. That people only mattered because of what they could provide.””
I looked away.
“Sounds familiar.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I know.””
A waitress placed coffee on the table.
Nobody touched it.
“What is the secret?”” I asked.
Richard reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“This.””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
A handwritten letter from Ethan.
But the date was years ago.
Before our wedding.
My hands trembled as I read the first line.
*I know Claire’s family will protect her, and I know what I need to do.*
I stopped.
The words blurred.
I kept reading.
Ethan had written about me.
About my father.
About the trust.
About how patient he needed to be.
How he needed to appear independent.
How he needed to make me trust him completely.
I looked up.
“He wrote this before we married.””
Richard nodded.
“I found it after he moved out.””
My chest felt heavy.
All those memories.
Every dinner.
Every promise.
Every “I love you.””
Had they all been part of a plan?
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“I wanted to tell you before.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Diane threatened me.””
I looked at him.
“She threatened you?””
“She said if I exposed Ethan, she would destroy what little relationship we had left.””
I understood then.
Ethan wasn’t the only person trapped by Diane.
But that didn’t excuse his choices.
Richard looked at Noah.
“He’s innocent in all of this.””
“Yes.””
“He deserves better.””
I nodded.
Richard took a breath.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Ethan’s custody request wasn’t his first plan.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What was?””
Richard looked at the table.
“He wanted you to sign temporary guardianship papers after delivery.””
I frowned.
“I never saw those.””
“Because you refused.””
“I never knew about them.””
Richard nodded.
“That’s because the hospital staff member stopped you from seeing the documents.””
My heart raced.
“Melissa?””
“Yes.””
The pieces connected.
They didn’t create the plan after I rejected them.
They created the plan because they expected me to be too exhausted to fight.
Richard looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Claire.””
I folded the letter.
For the first time, I wasn’t asking why Ethan hurt me.
I already knew.
The question was different.
How much further would he have gone?
That evening, Daniel called.
His voice was serious.
“Claire, we received the judge’s preliminary decision.””
My heart jumped.
“What did it say?””
A pause.
Then:
“The court denied Ethan’s emergency custody request.””
I closed my eyes.
A wave of relief passed through me.
“But?””
I knew there was always a but.
Daniel continued.
“Ethan filed an appeal.””
I looked toward Noah’s crib.
“How long can this continue?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then answered:
“Until the court makes a final ruling.””
I looked at my son.
I was tired.
But I wasn’t afraid anymore.
Because Ethan had spent months building a plan.
And now everyone knew the truth.
But Daniel’s next words made my blood run cold.
“Claire, there’s another problem.””
“What?””
“We found a new document.””
“What document?””
May you like
His voice lowered.
“One signed by you.””
