Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Hired to Watch Me
For three years, I had believed Vanessa entered my life by chance.
We met at a charity auction in Atlanta. She laughed at my terrible joke about overpriced champagne, asked about my daughter, and listened when I spoke about Emily. She never pushed me to move on before I was ready. She never complained when I canceled dates because Lily was sick or frightened by a thunderstorm.
Now Detective Collins was telling me that Vanessa had been hired to follow me.
"Explain that," I said.
"We interviewed Thomas Bell, the former employee of the security firm," Detective Collins replied.
"He remembers Vanessa being assigned to monitor your movements and report on your business meetings, personal relationships, and access to family documents.""
"Who hired her?""
"James Carter.""
I gripped the phone.
"What was he looking for?""
"According to Bell, James wanted to know whether you had discovered irregularities in the family accounts. He also wanted information about your plans for Lily's inheritance.""
I stared at the sleeping child beside me.
"How long was she watching me?""
"Bell believes the assignment began approximately six months after your wife's death.""
Six months.
That was when I had finally returned to work full-time. When I had started attending charity events again. When James had encouraged me to meet people and reminded me that Emily would want me to be happy.
He had been pushing me toward Vanessa before I knew she existed.
"Did James tell Vanessa to seduce me?""
"We can't establish that yet. Bell says the original assignment was surveillance, but he remembers James later asking Vanessa to submit personal reports about your emotional state and your relationship with your daughter.""
My stomach turned.
"He was studying me.""
"That's one possible interpretation.""
"No. He was finding out how to manipulate me.""
Detective Collins paused.
"Michael, there's something else. Bell says Vanessa reported that you were most vulnerable when you felt guilty about Emily's death. He also remembers a discussion about introducing someone into your household who could influence your financial decisions.""
I ended the call and sat motionless.
Vanessa hadn't merely pretended to love me.
She had learned exactly how to make me trust her.
She had studied my grief, my loneliness, and my desperate wish to give Lily a stable family. She had used the most painful parts of my life as a map.
And I had handed her the keys.
A knock sounded at the apartment door.
I checked the security camera before opening it.
Daniel stood outside, carrying a paper bag of groceries.
"How's Lily?""
"Sleeping.""
He stepped inside and placed the bag on the counter.
"I heard from Collins. Are you holding up?""
I gave a bitter laugh.
"Do I look like I'm holding up?""
"No.""
He sat beside me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then I told him about Vanessa's surveillance assignment.
Daniel shook his head.
"James must have been planning this for a long time.""
"He was planning it before Vanessa and I ever met.""
"Maybe longer than that.""
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?""
Daniel hesitated.
"When your father died, James asked me to help organize the company archives. There were boxes of old contracts, insurance files, and bank statements. One folder contained a list of people who had access to the family accounts.""
"Who was on it?""
"James. Richard Hale. Your mother. And you.""
I frowned.
"That makes sense. We were all involved in the estate.""
"Yes, but there was another name handwritten at the bottom.""
"Whose?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Vanessa Reed.""
I stared at him.
"How could she have access to the accounts before she knew me?""
"That's what I couldn't understand. I assumed she was an employee or contractor. When I asked James, he told me not to concern myself with administrative details.""
I stood and paced the room.
Every answer made the conspiracy larger.
If Vanessa had been connected to the family business before meeting me, then our relationship hadn't been a coincidence. If James had hired her to monitor me, then he might have known she would eventually gain access to my home.
And if Emily had discovered the scheme, her death might have been the event that made the entire plan possible.
My phone rang again.
Detective Collins.
"We found the original trust amendment," she said.
"It was stored in a private archive belonging to Richard Hale.""
"Does it have my signature?""
"No. The original bears your mother's signature, but the witness section is blank. The version sent to you appears to have been altered.""
I closed my eyes.
"So the document I saw was a forgery.""
"That's what the preliminary examination suggests. We're arranging forensic handwriting analysis and reviewing the electronic files associated with the amendment.""
"Can you arrest James?""
"Not based on this alone. We have grounds to investigate the financial fraud, but the circumstances of Emily's death require more corroboration.""
I forced myself to breathe.
"Then what do we need?""
"Evidence connecting the financial scheme to the accident. Bell mentioned that Vanessa kept a private notebook during her assignment. If we can locate it, it may contain details about her communications with James.""
"Where is it?""
"He believes she stored it in a rented unit under a different name.""
I looked toward the window.
"Find it.""
"We're working on that.""
After the call, I walked into Lily's room.
She had woken and was sitting up, rubbing her eyes.
"Daddy?""
"I'm here.""
She held out her arms.
I lifted her onto my lap.
"Are we safe?""
I wanted to promise her that we were. I wanted to tell her the bad people were gone and that nothing frightening would ever happen again.
But she deserved the truth.
"The police are helping us, sweetheart. And I won't let anyone hurt you.""
She rested her head against my chest.
"Can I tell you another secret?""
My heart tightened.
"Of course.""
She whispered, "Vanessa had a little book. She wrote things in it when she thought nobody was looking.""
"What kind of things?""
"She wrote your name. And Mommy's name.""
I looked down at her.
"Where did you see it?""
"In her suitcase. Before the wedding, she told me not to touch it.""
Lily paused.
"One time, I saw a picture inside. It was Mommy's car.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Was there anything written on the picture?""
She nodded.
"Vanessa said, 'This is the one that changes everything.''"
I held Lily closer and immediately called Detective Collins.
When I told her what Lily remembered, she went silent.
Then she said, "Michael, the rental unit has just been located. Officers are on their way.""
"What's inside?""
"We don't know yet.""
A few minutes later, my phone buzzed with an update.
The police had opened the unit.
They had found Vanessa's notebook.
And on the first page was a sentence that made my blood run cold.
*Operation Second Family: Phase Three begins when Michael signs the marriage documents.*
Below it was a handwritten date.
The date of my wedding.
The date Vanessa had planned to become my wife.
May you like
And beneath that, one final line:
*If James fails, Richard will eliminate the remaining witness.*
