Chapter 14: My Aunt’s Confession
Mom almost dropped the phone.
“What did you say?””
Rachel sobbed.
“I’m sorry.””
Dad reached for the phone, but Mom stepped away.
“No.””
Her voice was frighteningly calm.
“Say it again.””
“I told Graham.””
“You told him what?””
“That you were searching for Robert’s records.””
Mom closed her eyes.
I had never met Aunt Rachel many times, but I remembered her laugh.
Her Christmas presents.
The purple backpack she sent me when I started school.
Mom had trusted her.
For seven months, Rachel had been the one person Mom believed was safe.
“Why?”” Mom whispered.
Rachel cried harder.
“He had me trapped.””
“How?””
“Debt.””
Dad shook his head.
“Of course.””
Rachel heard him.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“I’m sorry.””
Dad’s voice was cold.
“You can apologize after you tell us where Graham is.””
“I don’t know.””
Ruiz motioned for Mom to keep her talking.
Mom asked, “When did this start?””
“Three years ago.””
Before Mom disappeared.
Before Vanessa became part of our daily lives.
Rachel explained that her small event-planning company had nearly collapsed.
A lender appeared.
Easy money.
No credit questions.
She signed.
Months later, Graham revealed the loan came through one of his shell companies.
“He said I could work off the debt.””
Mom whispered, “By spying on me?””
“At first it was harmless.””
“There is nothing harmless about spying on your sister.””
“I know.””
“You gave him my medical records?””
Rachel stopped crying.
That silence answered.
Mom’s face crumpled.
“Rachel.””
“He wanted your old insurance forms.””
“My pregnancy records?””
“I didn’t know why.””
“That’s how he fabricated the DNA test.””
“I didn’t know!””
Mom screamed.
“You keep saying that!””
I flinched.
She saw me and immediately lowered her voice.
Rachel whispered, “I gave him information. I never knew he would threaten Emma.””
“But when you found out?””
Silence.
Mom’s eyes filled.
“You kept helping.””
“He said he’d destroy me.””
“You let me believe Daniel might hurt our daughter.””
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
Mom’s voice broke.
“But I was alone because my own sister was feeding him everything I did.””
Rachel cried.
“I’m sorry.””
Ruiz stepped closer.
“Rachel, this is Detective Ruiz. If you want any chance of helping your sister now, tell me where Graham is.””
“I don’t know.””
“What does he want?””
“Robert’s ledger.””
“Anything else?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
“What?””
“Daniel’s signature.””
Dad stared.
“On what?””
“I don’t know exactly. Something involving the trust.””
Elaine spoke from across the garage.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
“The sealed trust cannot be dissolved while Daniel lives unless he signs a renunciation.””
Dad laughed.
“So that’s the schedule.””
Ruiz looked at him.
“What?””
“Vanessa’s message. ‘The date stays unless he signs.’”
Elaine nodded.
“If Daniel signs away his rights, control shifts.””
“To whom?””
Elaine hesitated.
“Custodial trustee.””
Mom stared.
“You.””
“No. I was removed years ago.””
“Then who?””
Elaine looked at Samuel.
Samuel’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
Dad went still.
“Vanessa gets control of Emma’s trust?””
“Temporarily,” Elaine said.
“If Daniel dies before Emma reaches adulthood.””
Everything clicked.
Graham needed Dad to sign.
If Dad refused, Graham had another path.
The date beside Dad’s name.
Mom whispered, “He was going to kill Daniel.””
Ruiz didn’t contradict her.
Rachel suddenly said, “Claire?””
Mom turned back to the phone.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“Graham told me tonight was the last chance.””
“For what?””
“To get Daniel’s signature.””
Dad asked, “Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Rachel!””
“I swear!””
Then she stopped.
“Wait.””
We heard movement.
“Rachel?”” Mom asked.
Her breathing quickened.
“He’s here.””
Ruiz immediately signaled officers.
“Where are you?””
“My apartment.””
“Lock yourself in a room.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“He has a key.””
A door opened on Rachel’s end.
Mom whispered, “Run.””
Footsteps.
Rachel gasped.
Then Graham’s voice came through.
“Hello, Claire.””
Mom gripped the phone.
“Don’t touch her.””
“That depends on Daniel.””
Dad stepped forward.
“I’m here.””
“Good.””
“What do you want me to sign?””
“A simple document.””
“You release Rachel first.””
Graham laughed.
“You still think you’re negotiating.””
Ruiz silently traced the call.
Dad kept talking.
“You need me alive.””
“For another hour.””
Mom grabbed Dad’s arm.
Graham continued.
“Bring Robert’s ledger.””
“Where?””
“Lake Mercer.””
Elaine shook her head violently.
Dad ignored her.
“The boathouse?””
“Yes.””
“Rachel comes home if I do?””
“If you follow instructions.””
Ruiz mouthed: Keep him talking.
Dad asked, “And Vanessa?””
Graham paused.
“What about her?””
“You tried to shoot her.””
“No.””
Everyone froze.
Dad frowned.
“You fired through my window.””
Graham laughed.
“If I wanted Vanessa dead, Daniel, Vanessa would be dead.””
Ruiz’s eyes narrowed.
“Then who fired?””
“That is a much better question.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ruiz’s radio crackled.
An officer from our house had reviewed footage from the shooting.
They had recovered a partial image from a neighbor’s camera.
The shooter was not Graham.
Smaller build.
Approximately five foot six.
Female.
Dad looked at Elaine.
Elaine looked at Mom.
Mom whispered one name.
“Vanessa.””
But Vanessa had been inside when the shots were fired.
Ruiz shook her head.
“Couldn’t be.””
Samuel suddenly spoke.
“Rachel.””
Mom turned.
“No.””
“She’s five-six.””
“No.””
“Claire—”
“She was on the phone with Graham.””
“Was she?””
Everyone went silent.
Ruiz asked for the neighbor footage.
A grainy frame appeared.
A woman in black crossed the backyard before the shooting.
Her face was mostly hidden.
But something hung from her neck.
A small gold pendant.
A sun.
Vanessa’s necklace.
Dad whispered, “Vanessa was wearing that tonight.””
Ruiz looked toward the house.
“Not when we arrested her.””
Dad stared.
“What?””
“She wasn’t wearing any necklace.””
Mom’s eyes widened.
“So who had it?””
Then my phone buzzed.
Another unknown message.
A photograph appeared.
Vanessa sat handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle.
Alive.
Below it:
*SHE WAS NEVER THE ONLY DAUGHTER.*
Elaine collapsed into a chair.
Samuel stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Elaine began shaking.
Dad stepped closer.
“Elaine.””
She covered her face.
“Tell us.””
Finally she looked up.
“I had twins.””
Silence.
“Vanessa and Victoria.””
Mom stared.
“Where is Victoria?””
May you like
Elaine’s answer came as barely a whisper.
“With Graham.””
