Chapter 1: The Voice Behind the Door
“DON’T OPEN IT!””
Vanessa’s scream ripped through the restaurant just as I lifted the meat tenderizer over my head.
I was eight years old.
The tool was so heavy I needed both hands to hold it.
My father came running around the corner.
“Emma! Put that down!””
But I wasn’t looking at him.
I was staring at the padlock hanging from the old metal storage door.
Because thirty seconds earlier, my mother had called me.
My mother who had been missing for seven months.
My mother everyone said had abandoned us.
And she had whispered five words I couldn’t stop hearing.
“I’m at Vanessa’s restaurant.””
Then the call had died.
“Emma.”” Dad slowed as he approached me.
“Honey, give me the tenderizer.””
“No.””
His face changed.
I had never told my father no like that.
Behind him, Vanessa appeared in the service corridor. Her normally perfect blond hair was loose around her face, and one hand gripped the wall.
“Daniel,” she said, breathing hard.
“Get that thing away from her.””
I pressed my back against the storage door.
“No!””
“Emma, what happened?”” Dad asked.
“Mommy called me.””
Everything stopped.
Even the kitchen noise seemed to disappear.
Dad stared at me.
Vanessa didn’t.
She stared at the old phone clenched in my left hand.
“That’s impossible,” Dad whispered.
“She called.””
“Emma—”
“She said she was here.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, she’s confused.””
“I’m not confused!””
My voice cracked.
Dad flinched.
For seven months, I had cried quietly.
I had asked where Mom was.
I had asked why she didn’t call on my birthday.
I had asked why she left her favorite blue sweater in the closet if she planned to disappear forever.
Adults always had answers that sounded reasonable.
Mom needed space.
Mom was angry.
Mom wasn’t ready to come home.
Then eventually—
Mom had chosen a different life.
But I had heard her voice.
“Sweetheart, listen to me,” Mom had whispered.
I could still hear the fear in it.
Dad crouched.
“Show me the phone.””
I handed it to him.
The recent call showed an unfamiliar number.
Twenty-three seconds.
Dad’s eyebrows pulled together.
Vanessa immediately said, “Anyone could have called.””
I looked at her.
“It was Mommy.””
“Emma, you’re upset.””
“I KNOW MY MOMMY’S VOICE!””
My scream echoed down the corridor.
Dad stood.
His face had gone pale.
“Vanessa, what’s behind this door?””
Her answer came too quickly.
“Inventory.””
“Then why is it locked?””
“Because employees steal.””
Dad looked at the padlock.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
I whispered, “I heard something.””
Vanessa froze.
Dad turned.
“What?””
I pressed my ear against the cold metal again.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
“See? There’s nobody—”
SCRAPE.
Dad’s head snapped toward the door.
A faint sound came from inside.
Three slow knocks.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
My whole body went cold.
“Mommy?””
Vanessa lunged forward.
“Emma, move!””
I swung the tenderizer down.
CLANG!
The padlock jumped.
Dad grabbed my wrist before I could swing again.
“Enough!””
“She’s in there!””
“You could break your hand!””
“THEN YOU OPEN IT!””
Dad stared at me.
I had tears running down my face now.
“Please.””
Something changed in him.
He released my wrist.
Then he faced Vanessa.
“Key.””
She folded her arms.
“There is nobody in there.””
“I didn’t ask.””
“Daniel—”
“Give me the key.””
Her face hardened.
“This is my restaurant.””
“And that’s my daughter crying against a locked door because she thinks her missing mother is inside it.””
Vanessa stepped closer to him.
“She’s eight. She’s traumatized. You’re encouraging a fantasy.””
Dad looked down at the phone again.
Then he pressed the unfamiliar number.
We waited.
One ring.
Two.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
And from somewhere nearby—
very faintly—
a phone began ringing.
Not in Vanessa’s pocket.
Not in the kitchen.
Behind the locked door.
Dad slowly lowered his phone.
I whispered, “Daddy.””
His face emptied of color.
The ringing stopped.
Then came a weak voice.
“Daniel?””
My father stumbled backward.
I knew that voice.
So did he.
“Claire?””
A hand struck the other side of the metal door.
“Daniel!””
Dad grabbed the padlock.
“Claire!””
Vanessa suddenly seized his arm.
“Wait.””
Dad turned toward her.
I had never seen him look at anyone that way.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“Why,” Dad repeated, “is my wife behind your locked door?””
“She came here acting crazy.””
“You told me you hadn’t seen her in seven months.””
“She showed up today.””
“When?””
“Daniel, please listen—”
Dad ripped his arm away.
“KEY!””
Vanessa flinched.
Two servers had appeared at the far end of the hallway.
The kitchen manager stood behind them.
Everyone was staring.
Vanessa glanced at the witnesses.
Then at the lock.
Then at Dad.
And suddenly her fear disappeared.
Her expression became strangely calm.
“You open that door,” she said softly, “and you’re going to wish you hadn’t.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“It’s a warning.””
My fingers tightened around the tenderizer.
Dad held out his hand.
“Emma.””
I gave it to him.
He wrapped both hands around the handle.
Vanessa backed away.
“Daniel.””
He raised it.
“Last chance. Give me the key.””
She said nothing.
Dad swung.
CLANG!
The lock twisted.
Again.
CLANG!
A screw tore loose from the old metal bracket.
From inside, Mom cried, “Hurry!””
Vanessa suddenly ran.
“Stop her!”” Dad shouted.
But everyone hesitated.
And Vanessa disappeared around the corner.
Dad hit the lock a third time.
The bracket ripped free.
I grabbed the door handle.
“Mommy!””
“Emma, wait—”
I pulled.
The heavy door opened six inches.
A smell rushed out.
Dust.
Cleaning chemicals.
Something sour.
Then a hand appeared through the gap.
Thin fingers.
A familiar silver wedding ring.
I screamed.
“Mommy!””
Dad yanked the door open.
And there she was.
My mother.
Alive.
Sitting on the floor.
Her hair was tangled. Her face was pale. There was a bruise near her temple, and her hands shook as she reached for me.
I threw myself against her.
She held me so tightly I could barely breathe.
“My baby.””
“You came back!””
“Oh, Emma.””
Dad stood frozen in the doorway.
“Claire…”
Mom looked over my shoulder at him.
And whatever Dad saw in her eyes made him stop moving.
“Claire, what happened?””
Mom’s arms tightened around me.
Then she looked toward the hallway where Vanessa had vanished.
“She knows.””
“Knows what?””
Mom swallowed.
“Daniel, Vanessa didn’t just lock me in here.””
May you like
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She’s the reason you thought I left.””
