Chapter 11: The Confession Behind the Barn
The police arrived within minutes.
Daniel showed them the documents connecting the farmhouse to Richard Voss.
The investigator explained that there was credible information suggesting an elderly man was being held against his will.
Officers moved toward the main house.
Another group approached the barn.
I stayed beside Opal.
She was trembling.
"That's my husband," she kept saying.
"That's my Walter.""
An officer approached Daniel.
"Mr. Price, we need you to remain here.""
"Of course.""
"Do any of you know whether there are weapons inside?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Richard usually kept security personnel at the property. I don't know if they're still there.""
The officers moved forward.
A loud command echoed across the field.
"Police! Come outside!""
A door slammed.
Someone ran.
Then came the sound of breaking glass.
I grabbed Opal's arm.
"Stay here.""
She shook her head.
"I am not leaving without Walter.""
Before I could answer, the farmhouse door opened.
Trevor emerged with his hands raised.
Two officers approached him.
"Turn around!""
He obeyed.
I watched as they handcuffed him.
Monica appeared behind him.
She was shouting.
"You have no right to do this! This is private property!""
An officer instructed her to step outside.
She reluctantly obeyed.
Then she saw me.
Her face changed.
"Rebecca!""
I stepped forward.
"Hello, Monica.""
"What are you doing here?""
"Looking for the people you helped disappear.""
She glanced toward the small building.
Then she looked at Trevor.
He wouldn't meet her eyes.
Monica lowered her voice.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"That's what you always say when you're frightened.""
She took a step toward me.
"You need to listen. Richard is dangerous. He's been controlling everything.""
I almost laughed.
"You were wearing our father's watch when you threatened me nineteen days after my release.""
Her jaw tightened.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
She looked away.
Before she could answer, an officer emerged from the building behind the barn.
"Mr. Price!""
Daniel hurried forward.
"We found someone.""
Opal pushed past me.
The elderly man was being helped down the steps.
His clothes were loose, his hair uncombed, and he leaned heavily on a walking stick.
But there was no doubt.
It was Walter.
Opal stopped several feet away.
"Walter?""
He raised his head.
For a moment, he seemed unable to recognize her.
Then his lips moved.
"Opal?""
She rushed toward him.
He dropped his walking stick and caught her in his arms.
She held his face between her hands.
"You're alive.""
Walter began crying.
"I'm sorry.""
"Seven years," she whispered.
"Seven years!""
"I know.""
"Why didn't you come home?""
He looked over her shoulder.
At Richard's farmhouse.
Then at the police officers.
"Because I was afraid.""
I approached slowly.
"Walter?""
He turned.
His eyes settled on my face.
"Rebecca Hale.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
He looked devastated.
"Your father would never have forgiven me.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did my father do?""
Walter lowered himself onto a chair the officers had brought outside.
"Thomas tried to stop Richard. He discovered the shell companies and realized they were being used to move money through several legitimate businesses.""
"Was my father involved?""
Walter looked down.
"He helped create the original financial structure. But he didn't know Richard was stealing.""
"Why didn't he report him?""
"Because Richard threatened his family.""
I stared at him.
"What family?""
"Your mother. You. Monica.""
My voice became sharper.
"Then why did you let them frame me?""
Walter's eyes filled.
"I didn't know what they had done until it was too late.""
I shook my head.
"You were alive. You knew Richard was responsible. You could have told the police.""
Walter closed his eyes.
"He had evidence that I had helped him move money during the early years. He threatened to release it and make me look like the mastermind.""
"And you believed him?""
"I was weak.""
Opal took his hand.
"Walter...""
He looked at her.
"I know. There's no excuse.""
Daniel approached.
"Mr. Hargrove, we need to ask you about the missing funds.""
Walter nodded.
"I'll tell you everything.""
Then he looked directly at me.
"Rebecca, your sister didn't just help Richard. She was the one who arranged the final transfer that put you in prison.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because Richard needed someone to take responsibility for the missing money. Someone with a clean financial history and authority over the company.""
"But Monica was my employee.""
"Exactly. She had access to your records, passwords, and signatures.""
I looked toward my sister.
She was standing beside the police vehicle.
Her face was expressionless.
Walter continued.
"Richard promised Monica that she would receive control of your company once you were convicted.""
I swallowed.
"And Trevor?""
Walter's voice became bitter.
"Trevor was supposed to receive a larger share of the stolen money.""
I remembered the wedding ring I had pawned to buy food after my release.
The house.
The company.
The four years.
All of it had been part of a financial arrangement.
Then Walter reached into his jacket and removed a small folded paper.
"There's something else you need to know.""
He handed it to Daniel.
"These are the instructions Thomas gave me before he died.""
Daniel unfolded the paper.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He looked at me.
"Your father left a trust account.""
"How much?""
Walter answered quietly.
"Almost twelve million dollars.""
I stared at him.
"That's impossible.""
"Your father knew Richard would eventually try to steal everything. He moved the legitimate assets into a protected trust.""
"Who controls it?""
Walter looked toward Monica.
"Your sister has been trying to get control of it for years.""
Daniel examined the paper again.
"There's a beneficiary.""
He turned it toward me.
My name was printed clearly.
Rebecca Elizabeth Hale.
But beneath it was another name.
Monica Elizabeth Hale.
I looked up.
"Why are both of us listed?""
Walter sighed.
"Because your father wanted his daughters to share everything.""
Then he said something that made the entire situation even more complicated.
"Rebecca, Monica was supposed to receive half the trust. But your father placed one condition on her inheritance.""
"What condition?""
May you like
Walter looked toward the farmhouse.
"She had to tell the truth about what happened to your mother.""
