Chapter 11: The Mother Who Was Erased
Grace stood beside her car, holding a photograph against her chest.
She looked older than Sarah and Rebecca, with silver threaded through her dark hair. Her eyes were red, and there was a thin scar along her jaw.
Rebecca approached her cautiously.
“Where have you been?””
Grace swallowed.
“Everywhere I could go without being found.””
“Why didn't you contact us?””
“Because Michael threatened to kill my child.””
Rebecca's face crumpled.
“Your child?””
Grace nodded.
“The fifth baby.””
Sarah gripped her sister's arm.
“Grace, what happened?””
Grace looked toward the hospital entrance.
“Not here. We need somewhere private.””
Noah unlocked his car.
“Come with us.””
Grace hesitated when she saw my father standing beside the vehicle.
“Daniel.””
He looked as though he'd seen a ghost.
“Grace.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You look surprised.””
“I thought you were dead.””
“You thought a lot of people were dead, didn't you?””
Dad lowered his eyes.
Grace climbed into the back seat beside me. Her hands trembled as she opened the photograph she'd been holding.
Five newborns lay together in a hospital nursery.
The first two wore yellow and blue blankets.
The third was a little girl wrapped in pink.
The fourth was wrapped in white.
The fifth wore a pale green blanket.
I recognized the yellow blanket immediately.
The same one Dad had kept in the attic.
The same one in my baby photograph.
“Who are the children?”” I asked.
Grace pointed to each baby.
“Ethan. Noah. Lily.
Gabriel. And my daughter.””
“What's her name?””
“Amelia.””
Noah leaned forward.
“Where is she?””
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Another sibling. Another child stolen from a mother. Another life built around a lie.
“Why did Michael want all of you separated?”” I asked.
Grace stared out the window.
“Because the five of you were connected to something he wanted to control.””
“What?””
She looked at my father.
“Money.””
Dad shook his head.
“That's not the whole story.””
“Then tell it,” Grace snapped.
He remained silent.
Grace turned back to us.
“My parents owned several properties around Charlotte. When they died, their estate was divided among the family. A trust was established for the next generation, but the terms were complicated. Each child born into the family had a share.””
Claire frowned.
“Are you saying the children were separated because of an inheritance?””
“Not just an inheritance. The trust included a property portfolio, investments, and a controlling interest in a private medical foundation. Michael believed that if he could establish legal guardianship over the children, he could control the trust until they became adults.””
Noah shook his head.
“That sounds insane.””
“It was,” Grace replied.
“But Michael had access to lawyers, doctors, and people willing to alter documents. He didn't need to own the children. He needed to control who was legally recognized as their guardian.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Why would he need five children?””
“Because the trust was designed to protect the family estate from being sold or controlled by one person. Every child had a separate voting interest once they reached adulthood.””
Claire's expression changed.
“That's why the records were altered.””
Grace nodded.
“Michael wanted to keep the children apart until he could establish control over every share.””
Dad finally spoke.
“I never knew about the trust.””
Grace looked at him coldly.
“You signed the documents.””
“Michael told me they were adoption papers.””
“And you didn't read them?””
Dad looked away.
Grace continued.
“I was pregnant with Amelia when Michael found out about the trust. He told me the baby would be safer if I disappeared. I refused. So he took her.””
Her voice broke.
“I spent years searching for her. Every lead ended with a closed file, a missing record, or a person who suddenly couldn't remember anything.””
Rebecca reached for her hand.
“I'm sorry.””
Grace squeezed her fingers.
“I know.””
I looked at my father.
“Did you know about the trust when you took Noah and me?””
“No,” he whispered.
“Not at first.””
“Then when did you find out?””
He stared at the floor.
“When you were five. That's why I took you to the hospital. Michael wanted you to identify a child.””
“Lily?””
Dad nodded.
“He wanted to know whether you remembered her.””
I felt sick.
“What happened when I saw her?””
“You called her by name.””
My throat tightened.
“I remembered her.””
“Yes.””
Dad wiped his face.
“You told Michael that Lily was your sister and that he couldn't take her away. He became furious. He said you were too young to understand what was happening.””
Grace closed her eyes.
“That was the night Claire disappeared.””
Claire shook her head.
“I wasn't missing. I was locked in a storage room until security found me the next morning.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“You never told anyone?”” I asked.
“I did. But the hospital said I'd wandered away from my assigned department. My father tried to file a complaint, and the hospital threatened to dismiss him.””
She looked at Grace.
“Michael had people protecting him.””
Noah pulled out his phone.
“Then we need proof. Something he can't make disappear.””
Grace reached into her bag and removed a small flash drive.
“I have it.””
She placed it on the seat between us.
“Original birth records, trust documents, transfer agreements, and recordings of Michael discussing the placements. I collected them over the years.””
Claire stared at the drive.
“Where did you get these?””
“From Michael's office. He kept copies because he didn't trust anyone else to maintain the records.””
My father looked alarmed.
“Grace, you don't understand what you've done.””
She turned toward him.
“I understand exactly what I've done.””
Then she looked at me.
“Ethan, there's one more thing you need to know. The trust becomes fully active when the oldest child turns eighteen.””
I thought of my birthday, only a few weeks away.
“What happens then?””
“Each child must be identified and appear before an independent trustee. If any child is missing, the estate is frozen.””
Noah stared at her.
“So Michael has been keeping us apart to control the money.””
“That's part of it,” Grace said.
“But there's another reason.””
She looked at Dad.
“Michael believes one of the children knows where the original trust document is hidden.””
My father went pale.
“Which child?””
Grace shook her head.
“He never told me.””
My phone rang.
Tyler.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
His voice was frantic.
“Ethan, you need to get here now. Vanessa found the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones in the attic. She's burning them.””
I sat forward.
“Get out of the house!””
“I can't. She's locked the front door.””
A crash sounded through the phone.
Then Tyler shouted, “Ethan, there's someone else here!””
“Who?””
The line crackled.
A man's voice spoke in the background.
“Give me the drive, Tyler.””
I recognized it instantly.
Michael.
May you like
Tyler screamed.
Then the call ended.
