Chapter 11: My Mother’s Last Promise

“That’s impossible.””

Dad said it twice.

Thomas Bennett didn’t argue.

He simply turned the document toward him.

Dad pointed at Lily’s name.

“Rebecca died before Lily was born.””

“I know.””

“Before Amanda and I met.””

“I know.””

“Then how can Lily be named here?””

Thomas removed his glasses.

“She isn’t.””

I frowned.

“But it says Lily.””

“It says Lily Carter.””

Dad looked at him.

Thomas turned to another page.

“Rebecca named a future child.””

Marcus leaned closer.

Thomas read the clause.

“If Daniel Carter becomes the legal or adoptive father of another minor child before Ethan reaches eighteen, that child shall receive specified protections and a limited secondary benefit.””

Dad stopped breathing.

I looked at Lily.

She didn’t understand either.

Thomas explained gently.

“Your mother wanted Ethan protected. But she also knew Daniel might someday rebuild his family.””

Dad covered his mouth.

Thomas continued.

“She didn’t want a future child in your household treated as less deserving of basic security.””

Lily stared at the paper.

“Ethan’s mommy did that?””

“Yes.””

“Even though she didn’t know me?””

Thomas smiled.

“She knew your dad.””

Dad turned away.

His shoulders shook.

I had seen him cry before.

At Mom’s grave.

On the anniversary of her death.

But this was different.

It was grief mixed with something warmer.

Like Mom had reached through all those years and touched him.

Lily walked over.

She slipped her tiny hand into his.

“Daddy?””

Dad crouched and hugged her.

“She thought of you before any of us knew you existed.””

Lily started crying.

“So I am family?””

Dad held her tighter.

“You always were.””

Marcus cleared his throat.

“But there’s an important legal distinction.””

Dad looked up.

“What?””

“The clause activates if you became Lily’s legal or adoptive father.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“Amanda told me the adoption paperwork was completed.””

Marcus frowned.

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

“Who handled it?””

Dad hesitated.

“Amanda said her attorney did.””

Marcus and Thomas exchanged a look.

Dad stood.

“Oh, no.””

Marcus asked, “Did you attend a final hearing?””

“No. Amanda said it wasn’t required because Lily’s biological father had signed consent and the attorney could handle the filing.””

Thomas leaned back.

“That’s unusual.””

Dad pulled out his phone.

Marcus stopped him.

“I’ll verify the records.””

Lily clung to Dad.

“What does that mean?””

He crouched again.

“It means some adults may have made mistakes with paperwork.””

“Are you still my daddy?””

His answer came instantly.

“Yes.””

“But if the paper says no?””

“I don’t care what the paper says about how I feel.””

Lily buried her face in his shoulder.

Marcus stepped outside to make calls.

Twenty minutes later, he returned.

His expression told us everything.

“There’s no finalized adoption.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“What is there?””

“An application was started. Never completed.””

“Why?””

“The biological father’s consent was missing.””

Lily whispered, “Who is he?””

Marcus looked at Dad.

Dad looked at Thomas.

Nobody wanted to say Michael’s name.

Then Dad’s phone rang.

Rachel.

He answered.

“Daniel, Amanda contacted me again.””

“Where is she?””

“I don’t know. But she wants to talk to Lily.””

Dad looked at her.

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Dad said, “Lily doesn’t want to speak right now.””

Amanda’s voice suddenly came through Rachel’s phone in the background.

“Put me on!””

Dad stiffened.

Rachel must have merged the call.

“Amanda?””

“You had no right to take her to Bennett.””

Dad stared at Marcus.

“How do you know where we are?””

Amanda stopped.

That tiny silence betrayed her.

Dad stood.

“You’re watching us.””

“No.””

“Then how did you know?””

“Michael told me.””

Every eye turned toward Marcus.

Michael was no longer with us.

The police had released him after documenting his information because there had been no immediate basis to detain him.

Marcus cursed under his breath.

Dad’s voice hardened.

“What are you trying to do?””

Amanda began crying.

“I’m trying not to lose my daughter.””

“Then come home.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because you’ll take her from me.””

“I’m trying to keep both children safe.””

“You never cared about Lily like Ethan.””

Lily heard that.

She stepped toward the phone.

“That’s not true!””

Amanda went silent.

“Lily?””

“Daddy makes my lunch.””

Amanda inhaled.

“He loves Ethan more.””

“No.””

“He does.””

“No!””

Lily was crying now.

“He came to my school play when you forgot!””

Amanda stopped.

“He stayed when I was sick!””

“Sweetheart—”

“He knows I hate peas!””

Dad knelt beside her.

Lily grabbed his shirt.

“He’s my daddy!””

Amanda’s breathing became ragged.

Then she said something strange.

“Daniel, you don’t understand what Michael will do.””

Dad looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

Amanda whispered, “He wants the money.””

“We know.””

“No.””

Her voice dropped.

“You don’t.””

Dad waited.

Amanda began crying harder.

“The money wasn’t supposed to be for me.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“Who was it for?””

Amanda didn’t answer.

Dad said her name.

Finally she whispered:

“Michael said if I didn’t pay him, he’d take Lily.””

The room went silent.

Dad’s face changed.

“Why would Michael think he could take her?””

Amanda sobbed once.

May you like

Then came the answer.

“Because he’s her father.””
