Chapter 1

"When I came home from work, I heard my five-year-old daughter screaming from the living room—and found my mother-in-law striking both of her little hands with a thin cane.

“Stop!”

I dropped my purse and ran toward them.

My daughter, Emma, was sitting on the floor with tears streaming down her face.

My mother-in-law, Margaret, raised the cane again.

I grabbed her wrist before it came down.

“What are you doing to my child?”

Margaret yanked her arm away.

“She needed to learn to keep her eyes to herself.”

Emma crawled behind me.

“Mommy, I didn’t do anything.”

I looked at her shaking hands.

“Tell me what happened.”

Margaret snapped, “She’s lying.”

Emma shook her head desperately.

“I saw Grandma in your bedroom.”

The room went silent.

I turned toward Margaret.

“My bedroom?”

Emma nodded.

“She opened your closet and took something from the box on the top shelf.”

Margaret’s face changed instantly.

“That child has an imagination.”

I knew exactly which box Emma meant.

Nobody except my husband and I was supposed to know it existed.

I looked back at the cane in Margaret’s hand.

“You hurt her because she saw you stealing from me?”

Margaret stepped toward Emma again.

“Don’t you dare accuse me—”

I ripped the cane from her hand and struck it against Margaret’s arm, forcing her back.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

My husband, Ryan, suddenly walked in from the backyard.

“What the hell is happening?”

Margaret immediately started crying.

“Your wife attacked me!”

Emma ran into her father’s arms.

“Grandma was hitting me because I saw her take Mommy’s things.”

Ryan stared at his mother.

Margaret went completely still.

I ran upstairs and opened my closet.

The hidden box was gone.

Then I heard Ryan shout from downstairs.

“Mom… why do you have this?”

I rushed back down.

He was holding an old envelope he had pulled from Margaret’s handbag.

Written across the front was my name.

Underneath it were the words: “DNA RESULTS — DO NOT SHOW SARAH.”
