Chapter 6

Detective Ruiz refused to let me go alone.

I refused to let Lily go at all.

For the first time in days, we agreed on something.

Christopher wanted a reaction.

He wanted fear.

He wanted me desperate enough to follow instructions.

Instead, police planned a controlled response.

I texted the unknown number.

I need proof you have the box.

The reply came almost immediately.

A video.

Christopher sat at a table.

Older than the schoolyard picture.

Tired.

Angry.

The blue metal box was in front of him.

He lifted it.

Then looked into the camera.

“Michael, Vanessa has lied to you for years.”

His voice was calm.

That made him more frightening.

“She lied to Rachel.”

“She lied to me.”

“And now she has lied to Lily.”

He tapped the box.

“The truth is here.”

Then he smiled.

“Your daughter deserves to know who her father is.”

The video ended.

I nearly threw the phone.

Ruiz stopped me.

“Keep your head.”

“He’s talking about my child.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Ruiz stared at me.

“Michael, if he wanted to help Lily, he wouldn’t be threatening you.”

That steadied me.

He was right.

Whatever Christopher believed, this wasn’t about love.

It was about possession.

Control.

Exactly what Vanessa had said.

The DNA results arrived that afternoon.

Ruiz didn’t tell me over the phone.

He came to the safe house.

That told me enough.

Lily was drawing in the kitchen with Maria.

Ruiz handed me an envelope.

“I thought you should read it yourself.”

I didn’t want to open it.

Not because I feared losing Lily.

Nothing could make me stop loving her.

But because I feared what the result meant about Rachel.

About my marriage.

About every memory.

I opened it.

Probability of biological paternity: 0.00%.

I stared at the page.

The words blurred.

Ruiz gave me time.

I finally whispered, “I’m not her biological father.”

“No.”

I sat down.

For several seconds, I heard nothing.

Then Lily laughed in the next room at something Maria said.

That sound brought me back.

I folded the paper.

“She’s still my daughter.”

Ruiz nodded.

“Yes.”

“Does she need to know?”

“Not today.”

I looked toward the kitchen.

“Christopher is her father?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“He thinks he is.”

“Yes.”

“Test him.”

“We need his DNA.”

“Then catch him.”

“We’re trying.”

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT.

Ruiz photographed the screen.

I typed.

I’ll come. Lily stays with me until I see the box.

Christopher replied.

NO LILY. NO DEAL.

I looked at Ruiz.

“He’s obsessed.”

“Yes.”

“What happens if I refuse?”

“We find another way.”

But Christopher didn’t give us time.

A news alert appeared thirty minutes later.

County jail evacuation after electrical fire.

I opened it.

Smoke.

Fire trucks.

Prisoners being transferred.

Then Ruiz’s phone rang.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then cursed.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“Vanessa escaped during the transfer.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“Transport van was struck at an intersection.”

“By who?”

“A stolen pickup.”

Ruiz was already moving.

“Christopher.”

“Likely.”

I grabbed his arm.

“You think they’re working together?”

“I think we can’t assume anything.”

Within an hour, a statewide search was underway.

Then Maria received a phone call.

She answered.

Her face drained.

“Who is it?”

She handed me the phone.

Vanessa.

“Michael.”

“Where are you?”

“Listen to me.”

“You escaped custody.”

“Christopher forced the van off the road.”

“Are you with him?”

“No.”

“Then turn yourself in.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because he’ll take Lily.”

“He doesn’t have Lily.”

“Not yet.”

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa was breathing hard.

“He knows where you are.”

I looked at Ruiz.

He signaled for officers to move.

“How?”

“Someone inside the police department is helping him.”

Ruiz stiffened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because Christopher told me the address.”

I looked around the safe house.

Suddenly every wall felt unsafe.

Vanessa continued.

“You have to leave.”

“Where are you?”

Silence.

“Vanessa.”

“I went to the cabin.”

My heartbeat accelerated.

“Why?”

“To finish this.”

“What are you doing?”

“I found the box.”

“You’re with Christopher?”

“No.”

“Then who sent me the video?”

“He recorded it earlier.”

I looked at Ruiz.

“Where is he now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is the box?”

“I have it.”

I almost shouted.

“Then bring it to police.”

“No.”

“Vanessa!”

“Rachel made me promise.”

“Rachel is dead!”

The words came out harsher than I intended.

Vanessa went quiet.

Then said, “That is exactly why I can’t break the promise.”

“What promise?”

“That Emma would stay hidden.”

My pulse pounded.

“You know where she is.”

“No.”

“You just said—”

“I know how to find her.”

Ruiz moved closer, listening.

Vanessa continued.

“The blue box contains coordinates.”

“Coordinates to Emma?”

“I think so.”

“Open it.”

“I did.”

My breath caught.

“What else is inside?”

“A letter.”

“From Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“To who?”

“You.”

My chest tightened.

“Read it.”

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

“You need to read it yourself.”

“Then bring it.”

“I’m trying.”

A loud sound came through the phone.

Vanessa gasped.

“What was that?”

No answer.

“Vanessa?”

Footsteps.

Then a man’s voice.

“Hello, Michael.”

Christopher.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“What did you do to her?”

“Nothing she didn’t earn.”

“Put Vanessa back on.”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“You know what I want.”

“Lily isn’t coming.”

A pause.

Then Christopher laughed.

“You still call her Lily.”

My skin crawled.

“That’s her name.”

“No.”

His voice changed.

“Rachel named her Claire.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Vanessa changed it when she helped you file the adoption paperwork.”

“What adoption paperwork?”

Another laugh.

“Oh, Michael.”

Ruiz was typing something to officers.

Tracing.

Christopher continued.

“You truly have no idea.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Rachel knew the baby wasn’t yours.”

I felt sick.

“She told me after she was born.”

“You’re lying.”

“She begged me to leave you both alone.”

“Why?”

“Because she thought I killed Emma.”

“Did you?”

Silence.

Then Christopher said, “Vanessa did.”

My hand tightened.

“That’s not what she says.”

“Vanessa lies when she breathes.”

“Where is Emma?”

“If I knew, do you think I would be asking?”

“What’s in Rachel’s letter?”

“You’ll never know unless you bring my daughter.”

I heard Vanessa groan in the background.

“Is she hurt?”

“Vanessa is alive.”

“Let her go.”

“Bring Lily.”

“No.”

“Then Vanessa dies.”

I almost said I didn’t care.

After what Vanessa had done to Lily, part of me wanted to.

But I couldn’t.

I had already crossed one line when I hit her.

I wouldn’t cross another.

“Give me two hours.”

“One.”

“Two.”

“One.”

He hung up.

Ruiz looked at his team.

“Did we get it?”

An officer shook his head.

“Call routed through several relays.”

Ruiz cursed.

Then Lily appeared in the doorway.

We all froze.

She was holding Charlie.

“How much did you hear?”

She looked at me.

“Am I really not your daughter?”

My heart broke.

I crossed the room and dropped to my knees.

“You are my daughter.”

“But the man said—”

“I don’t care what any man says.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Did Mommy lie too?”

I hugged her.

“I don’t know.”

“Was my name Claire?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you my real daddy?”

That question hurt more than the DNA report.

I pulled back and held her face gently.

“I changed your diapers.”

She blinked.

“I stayed up when you had fevers.”

Her lip trembled.

“I taught you to swim.”

A tiny nod.

“I was there when you got your first prosthetic.”

She began crying.

“I held you when you were scared.”

I pressed my forehead against hers.

“A piece of paper can tell us about biology.”

I swallowed.

“It cannot tell me whether I’m your daddy.”

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

I held her.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number again.

This time it was not Christopher.

A woman.

“Michael Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Anna.”

“Who are you?”

She hesitated.

Then said, “I knew Rachel.”

My body went still.

“How?”

“She brought a child to me seven years ago.”

My pulse exploded.

“What child?”

The woman started crying.

“Emma Whitmore.”

Ruiz grabbed another phone and began tracing.

I barely noticed.

“Is Emma alive?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Where?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Why are you calling?”

“Because Christopher found me.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Where are you?”

“I ran.”

“Does Emma know?”

“She’s not with me anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

Anna’s breathing became shaky.

“Rachel arranged for Emma to live with another family.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then how do we find her?”

“Rachel left a code.”

“In the blue box?”

“Yes.”

“Christopher has it.”

Silence.

Then Anna whispered.

“No.”

“What?”

“The coordinates in the box do not lead to Emma.”

Cold moved through me.

“Where do they lead?”

Anna answered.

“To the place where Rachel hid the evidence against Christopher.”

“What evidence?”

May you like

Her reply was barely audible.

“Proof that Emma was never his only victim.”
