Chapter 12: The Choice He Couldn't Predict

“Lock the floor!””

Lena shouted over the alarm.

Security officers moved immediately.

Daniel removed the tiny chip from the pendant.

“Samuel cannot get this.””

Dad took my arm.

“Nia, behind me.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“This isn't the time.””

“Mom gave it to me.””

“She gave it to you to protect you.””

“No. She gave it to me because nobody knew I had it.””

Daniel looked between us.

“She may have done both.””

The alarm stopped.

Silence crashed over the office.

Then Samuel's voice came through the intercom.

“Hello, Elijah.””

Dad looked upward.

Samuel continued.

“And hello, Daniel.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You should've disappeared when you had the chance,” Samuel said.

Daniel answered calmly.

“You already took one future from me.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Samuel almost sounded amused.

“And look how useful it made you.””

Daniel's face changed.

That sentence told me everything about Samuel.

Pain was never pain to him.

It was material.

“Where are you?”” Dad demanded.

“Closer than you think.””

Lena checked the security cameras.

“Movement on forty-two.””

We were on forty-four.

Security officers rushed toward the stairwell.

Samuel spoke again.

“Nia, you have something that belongs to me.””

“No.””

“It contains proprietary company information.””

“It contains evidence.””

“Same thing, depending on the lawyer.””

Dad's voice became cold.

“You're going to prison.””

Samuel laughed.

“Perhaps.””

Then his tone changed.

“But first, Nia gets her final choice.””

A monitor activated.

Madison appeared.

She was sitting in Principal Whitaker's office.

Police officers stood nearby.

Samuel wasn't threatening her.

He was showing her.

“Madison Carter destroyed your test.””

I said nothing.

“She humiliated you.””

“Yes.””

“She helped torment scholarship students.””

“Yes.””

Samuel continued.

“And now you have enough evidence to destroy her family publicly.””

Madison could hear him through the screen.

Her face crumpled.

Samuel said:

“Do it.””

I stared at the monitor.

“What?””

“Release everything.””

A folder appeared.

Private financial records.

Messages from Richard Carter.

Family information.

Things unrelated to Madison's bullying.

Things that would hurt people who had nothing to do with what happened.

Dad understood.

“He wants you to retaliate.””

Samuel laughed.

“I want her to choose.””

My mother's words returned.

You don't owe anyone a performance of your pain.

Samuel continued.

“Madison showed you exactly who she is.””

I looked at her image.

Then I answered.

“Yes.””

Madison flinched.

“But that doesn't mean I become you.””

Samuel stopped laughing.

I stepped toward the monitor.

“I'll give the police evidence of what Madison did.””

Silence.

“I'll tell the truth about the group chat.””

Samuel said nothing.

“But I'm not publishing her family's private lives because you want revenge disguised as justice.””

Dad stared at me.

Daniel smiled faintly.

Samuel's voice hardened.

“You're weak.””

“No.””

I looked directly at the camera.

“I'm choosing where it stops.””

The monitor went black.

Lena suddenly shouted:

“We've got him.””

Security footage appeared.

Samuel was entering the forty-third-floor server room.

Dad moved toward the door.

Daniel stopped him.

“He wants you downstairs.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the chip.

“Because he thinks we still have the only copy.””

I understood.

“Do we?””

Daniel smiled.

“Not anymore.””

While Samuel had been talking, Daniel had uploaded M-ORIGINAL.

Not publicly.

To three law firms.

Two federal investigators.

And an independent journalist.

Dad stared at him.

“When?””

“When he started monologuing.””

For the first time all night, I almost laughed.

Lena's radio crackled.

“Security has Vale.””

Dad closed his eyes.

It was over.

Or I thought it was.

Then Daniel opened M-ORIGINAL.

The first file was his recording.

The second contained financial records.

The third contained Mom's investigation.

Then we reached a folder marked:

*WESTBRIDGE — AUTHORIZATION*

Dad opened it.

My stomach dropped.

Project Merit had required someone inside Westbridge to provide student schedules, security blind spots, scholarship records, and disciplinary information.

Samuel had not done it alone.

There were monthly payments.

Dozens of them.

All sent to one recipient.

Principal Thomas Whitaker.

“No,” I whispered.

Dad stared at the screen.

The man who had promised to investigate.

The man who claimed he knew nothing.

The man who had access to every scholarship student in the school.

Daniel opened the most recent payment.

Dated that morning.

Memo:

*FINAL TEST — BROOKS SUBJECT*

Dad grabbed his phone.

“Get officers back to Westbridge now.””

I called Madison.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Chloe called me.

I answered.

“Nia?””

She was crying.

“What happened?””

“Principal Whitaker told the police we could leave.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where's Madison?””

“I thought she was with her dad.””

“She isn't?””

“No.””

“Chloe, where is Whitaker?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“His car is gone.””

Dad heard.

He was already moving.

My phone buzzed with a photograph.

Madison sat in the passenger seat of a car.

Her eyes were wide with fear.

Behind her, visible in the mirror, was Principal Whitaker.

May you like

Underneath the photograph was one sentence.

*YOUR TEST WAS NEVER ABOUT MADISON.*
