Chapter 2: Camera Twelve

Nobody spoke.

The security director, Mr. Alvarez, placed his laptop on Headmaster Wallace's desk.

Madison stared at it.

Her mother recovered first.

“Before anyone plays anything,” Mrs. Carter said, “I want to know whether parents have consented to—”

“It's school security footage,” Mr. Alvarez interrupted.

Headmaster Wallace looked irritated.

“Robert, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

“No.””

The voice came from behind me.

Dad.

He stood in the doorway wearing his navy work uniform. There was grease near one sleeve, and his work boots looked painfully out of place against Westbridge's polished marble floor.

I'd never been happier to see anyone.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

Not Madison.

Not Wallace.

Me.

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Did anybody hit you?””

“No.””

“Did anybody put their hands on you?””

I hesitated.

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“Who?””

Tyler suddenly became very interested in the carpet.

Wallace stood.

“Mr. Bennett, please sit down. We're trying to establish—”

“My daughter just told me someone put their hands on her.””

“And three students claim Emma assaulted them.””

Dad looked at me again.

“Did you?””

“I defended myself.””

He nodded once.

“Then let's watch the video.””

Mrs. Carter stood.

“My daughter is a minor.””

“So is mine,” Dad said.

That ended the conversation.

Mr. Alvarez turned the laptop.

The footage began.

There I was, walking down the hallway.

Madison stepped into my path.

Tyler blocked me.

Madison took my paper.

Ripped it.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The room became completely silent.

Then the video showed Madison pointing at the floor.

There was no audio, but everyone could see her mouth moving.

Everyone could see me refusing.

Then Tyler grabbed my backpack.

I warned him.

He grabbed my wrist.

Dad leaned closer.

The next few seconds happened quickly.

I escaped.

Tyler stumbled into the lockers.

Connor rushed me.

I redirected him.

He fell.

Then Madison raised her hand toward my face.

I caught her wrist.

Released it.

Done.

Mr. Alvarez paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Dad looked at Wallace.

“You suspended my daughter for that?””

Wallace cleared his throat.

“Obviously this provides additional context.””

“Context?””

Dad pointed at the screen.

“A student steals her property, destroys it, orders her around, and then two boys physically corner her.””

Mrs. Carter stepped forward.

“Emma used excessive force.””

Dad looked at her.

“Where?””

“Excuse me?””

“Show me.””

He pointed at the laptop.

“Show me the excessive force.””

Mrs. Carter's mouth tightened.

Madison whispered, “Mom.””

Dad heard her.

He turned toward Madison.

“Did you tear up Emma's test?””

Madison looked at Wallace.

“Don't interrogate my daughter,” Mrs. Carter snapped.

“I'm asking one question.””

“She doesn't have to answer you.””

“No,” Dad said.

“She doesn't.””

Then he looked at Wallace.

“But you do.””

Wallace sat down.

“Mr. Bennett, let's remain calm.””

“I am calm.””

That was the frightening thing about my father.

He really was.

“Why did you decide Emma was guilty before reviewing your own security footage?””

Wallace didn't answer.

Dad continued.

“Why was her scholarship mentioned?””

Mrs. Carter's head turned sharply.

“Who mentioned her scholarship?””

I answered.

“Mrs. Carter said I wasn't the right cultural fit.””

Dad's expression hardened.

Mrs. Carter waved a hand.

“My words are being deliberately distorted.””

“No,” I said.

“They're being repeated.””

She stared at me.

I stared back.

Something about that bothered her more than anything else.

Maybe because I wasn't lowering my eyes anymore.

Wallace finally spoke.

“The suspension is withdrawn.””

Madison spun toward him.

“What?””

“Given the footage, Emma's actions appear defensive.””

“Appear?”” Dad asked.

Wallace corrected himself.

“Were defensive.””

“And Madison?””

Mrs. Carter stepped forward.

“You will not punish my daughter because this girl provoked—”

“Mom!””

Madison grabbed her arm.

Too late.

Everyone heard it.

Dad tilted his head.

“Provoked what?””

Mrs. Carter froze.

Madison whispered, “Stop talking.””

Mr. Alvarez closed the laptop.

“I should mention something else.””

Wallace looked exhausted.

“What?””

“This isn't the first complaint involving these students.””

Madison's face drained of color.

Tyler looked up.

“What complaints?””

Mr. Alvarez looked toward me.

“Emma, have they done things like this before?””

I thought about the cafeteria.

The locker room.

My backpack thrown into a trash can.

My missing calculator.

The anonymous messages.

The scholarship jokes.

Two years of pretending I hadn't heard.

“Yes.””

Dad looked at me.

“How long?””

I couldn't meet his eyes.

“Since sophomore year.””

His face changed.

“Emma.””

“I thought I could handle it.””

“For two years?””

“I didn't want you worrying.””

He stepped closer.

“You don't protect me by letting people hurt you.””

That sentence nearly broke me.

I swallowed hard.

Madison rolled her eyes.

“Oh my God. Can we stop acting like she's some helpless victim?””

Dad turned.

Madison continued before her mother could stop her.

“She thinks she's better than everyone because she gets perfect grades.””

“I never said that.””

“You don't have to!””

Madison pointed at me.

“You walk around here acting like you're special because you're the scholarship genius.””

“I walk to class.””

“You humiliated me!””

“When?””

“Every time grades get posted!””

I stared at her.

“You mean every time I score higher than you?””

Silence.

Tyler actually looked away.

Madison realized what she'd admitted.

Her mother grabbed her purse.

“We're leaving.””

“No,” Wallace said.

Everyone turned.

For the first time, the headmaster sounded authoritative.

“This meeting is not over.””

Mrs. Carter stared at him.

“My family has donated more money to this school than—”

Dad laughed.

Just once.

It wasn't amused.

“There it is.””

Mrs. Carter's eyes narrowed.

“What exactly are you implying?””

“Nothing.””

Dad looked at Wallace.

“I'm waiting to see whether your headmaster understands what you're implying.””

Wallace's face reddened.

Then his office phone rang.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

His secretary opened the door.

“Sir, I'm sorry.””

“What is it?””

She looked toward Madison.

Then toward me.

“You need to come outside.””

“Why?””

“There are about forty students in the hallway.””

Wallace frowned.

“Send them back to class.””

“They won't go.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why are they here?””

The secretary hesitated.

“Because somebody posted a video.””

Madison stopped breathing.

Mrs. Carter whispered, “What video?””

May you like

The secretary looked directly at her.

“The one from the hallway.””
