Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Before Me
I didn’t call the number immediately.
I wish I could say I was brave.
I wasn’t.
I sat there staring at the message for almost an hour.
Because some part of me wanted the story to end.
I wanted the truth to stop arriving.
I wanted one normal answer.
One simple explanation.
But my entire life had become a locked door.
And every person I trusted had been holding a different key.
Finally, I called.
The phone rang twice.
Then a man answered.
“Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Michael Reed.””
“You were my mother’s lawyer.””
There was a pause.
“Yes.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“What do you know?””
Michael sighed.
“I know I should have told you years ago.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone was afraid.
Everyone except me.
I was the only person who never got a choice.
“Tell me the truth.””
His voice became quiet.
“Your father didn’t take you because of custody.””
“Then why?””
“Because Sarah found something.””
My heart slowed.
“What?””
“A financial record.””
I frowned.
“What does money have to do with me?””
“It wasn’t about money.””
He paused.
“It was about Daniel.””
I stood up.
“What did she find?””
Michael took a breath.
“Before you were born, Daniel was involved in a business deal with someone dangerous.””
I felt cold.
“Dangerous how?””
“He owed people money.””
I looked out the motel window.
Cars moved along the road like nothing had changed.
Like my entire life hadn’t just fallen apart.
“Are you saying my father was hiding from someone?””
“Yes.””
“And he took me because?””
“Because Sarah discovered documents proving Daniel had been lying.””
I sat down again.
“What kind of documents?””
Michael hesitated.
“Records showing he had been using your name.””
My stomach turned.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
The pieces started connecting.
The changed records.
The adoption papers.
The lies.
“What did he do?””
“I can’t explain everything over the phone.””
“Then explain enough.””
Silence.
Then:
“Ethan, your father didn’t create a new identity for you because he wanted a fresh start.””
I waited.
“He created one because he wanted to disappear.””
I felt sick.
My father wasn’t just hiding me.
He was hiding himself.
I ended the call twenty minutes later.
Not because I had enough answers.
Because I had too many.
When I returned home, everyone was waiting.
Sarah stood on one side.
Dad and Vanessa stood on the other.
The image felt almost symbolic.
Two versions of my life.
The truth.
And the lie.
Dad walked toward me.
“Where were you?””
I looked at him.
“Finding out things you should have told me.””
His face fell.
“What did you hear?””
“That you were running.””
Nobody spoke.
Sarah looked shocked.
Vanessa looked confused.
Dad looked afraid.
Again.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That hurt more than an argument.
Because my father always had something to say.
Except when the truth arrived.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Ethan.””
I turned.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
I nodded.
“I believe you.””
The words surprised her.
They surprised me too.
Because despite everything, I believed her.
Not because she was perfect.
Because she was the only person who had nothing to gain anymore.
Then Grandpa walked into the room holding another envelope.
My patience disappeared.
“No.””
Everyone stopped.
“I can’t do another letter.””
Grandpa nodded.
“I understand.””
“Do you?””
My voice cracked.
“Because every time someone says they have something to show me, my whole life changes.””
He looked ashamed.
“This one is different.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
He handed it to me anyway.
“This isn’t from your father.””
I looked at the envelope.
The handwriting wasn’t Daniel’s.
It wasn’t Sarah’s.
It was unfamiliar.
“Who is it from?””
Grandpa looked toward the window.
“Your biological grandfather.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He nodded.
“Your mother’s father.””
I opened it slowly.
Inside was one sentence.
One sentence that made everyone go silent.
“I know who really took Ethan.””
I looked up.
May you like
Grandpa whispered:
“And he’s been alive this entire time.””
