Chapter 3: The Secret Daniel Hid
Daniel had not spoken to his father in eleven years.
Not since the night he left home at twenty-two with one suitcase and a promise that he would never become like him.
That was the story I knew.
The story Daniel told me.
But as he sat there holding the phone, staring at the ground, I realized there were pieces missing.
A lot of pieces.
“Your father?”” I repeated.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
The backyard was still full of guests.
But somehow it felt like we were the only three people there.
Me.
Daniel.
And Linda.
Linda looked nervous.
Not angry.
Nervous.
That was the first time I had ever seen it.
“Daniel,” she said quietly, “don’t listen to him.””
My eyes moved toward her.
Interesting.
Because she knew exactly who he was.
Daniel stood up.
“Why did Dad call you?””
Linda looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer came too quickly.
Daniel noticed too.
“Mom.””
She sighed.
“Today is not the day for this.””
I almost laughed.
Today was not the day?
She had destroyed my baby shower.
She had insulted my daughter.
She had turned a celebration into humiliation.
But suddenly she wanted peace.
Daniel walked away from the table.
“Everyone needs to leave.””
The guests exchanged looks.
My sister Emily came toward me.
“Sarah, are you sure you’re okay?””
I nodded.
“I will be.””
But I knew I wouldn’t.
Not until I understood why my husband’s family had been hiding things from me.
The guests slowly left.
The decorations stayed.
The cake remained smashed on the ground.
A perfect symbol of everything that had fallen apart.
An hour later, Daniel and I sat inside the living room.
The silence between us felt heavier than any argument.
Finally, he spoke.
“My dad called because he saw something online.””
I looked at him.
“Your mother’s baby shower?””
He nodded.
“He saw the video.””
My stomach tightened.
“There was a video?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Someone recorded it.””
I looked away.
Of course.
The humiliation that had happened in private was now something strangers could see.
Then Daniel said something I didn’t expect.
“He asked if you knew.””
“Knew what?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“My family history.””
I waited.
He didn’t continue.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“My father says my mother has been lying to me for years.””
I felt a chill.
“About what?””
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Like he was afraid of the words.
“About why they divorced.””
I stared at him.
“You told me your father left.””
“He did.””
“But?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“My mother told everyone he left because he didn’t want a family.””
A pause.
“But my father says she forced him out.””
I didn’t know what to say.
This was no longer just about a cake.
This was about years of secrets.
“Do you believe him?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
“I don’t know.””
I stood up.
“Daniel, what else don’t I know?””
His face tightened.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You stood there today while your mother said our daughter wasn’t enough.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I stepped closer.
“Because I need to know if you actually understand what happened.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I failed you.””
It was the first honest thing he had said all day.
But before I could respond, his phone buzzed again.
He looked at the screen.
This time, he didn’t answer.
“Who is it?””
He hesitated.
Then turned the phone toward me.
There was a message.
One sentence.
One name.
And a photo attached.
My heart stopped when I saw who was standing beside Daniel’s father.
Because the woman in the picture was not a stranger.
It was Linda.

And the message underneath said:
*“Your mother knows the real reason I left. Ask her what happened the night your sister was born.””*
