Chapter 10: The Visitor in the Dark

The person standing outside my house was someone I knew.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had sat beside me, listened to my fears, and promised to help uncover the truth.

My heart stopped.

Because the person under my porch light was Daniel.

My coworker.

My friend.

The man who had been sitting beside me when I first saw Noah crying on that classroom camera.

I didn’t move.

I didn’t breathe.

The phone was still pressed against my ear.

“Sarah?”” Amanda said.

I couldn’t answer.

“Sarah, what’s happening?””

I whispered:

“Daniel is outside.””

There was silence.

Then Amanda’s voice changed.

“Do not open the door.””

I watched Daniel look toward my window.

He knew I was home.

He knew I saw him.

The question was why.

I slowly stepped away from the window.

“Noah,” I whispered.

My son looked up from the couch.

“Mom?””

“Go to your room.””

His face changed.

“Why?””

“Just go.””

He didn’t argue.

That alone told me he understood something was wrong.

I locked the back door.

Then the front.

Then I checked the windows.

My hands were shaking.

The same man who had helped me call the school was standing outside my house.

The same man who had said, “Should we call the police too?””

The same man who had watched the footage with me.

How long had he known?

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

“Sarah,” Daniel called.

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Please open the door.””

I stayed silent.

“Sarah, I know you’re scared.””

I looked at the phone.

Amanda was still there.

“Record everything,” she whispered.

I pressed the recording button.

Daniel knocked again.

“I can explain.””

That sentence.

People only say that when there is something to explain.

I finally spoke through the door.

“Why are you here?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because you’re in danger.””

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know what it looks like.””

“You were at my house after midnight.””

“Yes.””

“You followed the school investigation.””

“Yes.””

“You were the one who told me to call the police.””

“Yes.””

My voice hardened.

“Then why are you standing outside my door?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Because I’m the reason you saw the footage.””

My body went cold.

“What?””

“I restored the camera feed.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because I knew what she was doing.””

The words hit me.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes.””

I looked through the window again.

Daniel looked exhausted.

Not threatening.

Not angry.

Just broken.

Amanda whispered:

“Don’t trust him.””

But something about his voice stopped me.

Not because I believed him.

Because I needed answers.

I opened the door chain but kept the door locked.

“Talk.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I used to work for the school district.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Before your company hired me.””

I had known Daniel for three years.

He had never mentioned that.

“I was part of the technology department.””

He swallowed.

“I installed the camera system.””

The pieces started connecting.

“You knew the cameras had blind spots.””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone covered it.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

His face fell.

“I tried.””

“Try harder.””

He looked away.

“Mrs. Carter’s father was on the school board.””

I froze.

“She wasn’t protected because she was a good teacher.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“She was protected because people were afraid of what would happen if she was exposed.””

I stared at him.

“Then why me?””

“Because Noah was different.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked toward the house.

“Mrs. Carter didn’t just choose random children.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she choose?””

He hesitated.

“Children who reminded her of herself.””

I didn’t understand.

“She believed certain children had the potential to become difficult adults.””

“That’s insane.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“But she built an entire system around that belief.””

A car pulled into the street.

Daniel looked behind him.

His expression changed.

“Sarah.””

“What?””

“You need to leave.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because she knows I talked.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the darkness beyond the driveway.

Then whispered:

“Mrs. Carter.””

The porch light flickered.

For one second, everything went dark.

Then it came back.

Daniel was staring past me.

Not at me.

Behind me.

I turned.

A folded envelope sat on the floor inside my doorway.

I hadn’t seen it before.

My name was written across it.

Sarah.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“She was already here.””

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Noah walking into school that morning.

Taken from across the street.

May you like

On the back were five words.

“Next time, I choose the witness.””
