Chapter 9

Adrian did not speak to Camille until sunrise.

Leo was taken to the hospital.

Grace went with him.

Adrian rode beside them.

For the first time since the pool, Leo slept without crying.

One tiny hand remained closed around Grace’s finger.

Adrian watched that hand for almost the entire drive.

At the hospital, doctors examined Leo again.

No serious injuries.

A few small cuts from the window rescue.

Stress.

Exhaustion.

Nothing that would not heal.

Grace nearly cried when the doctor said the words.

Adrian actually did.

He stood beside the hospital window and wiped his face quickly, as if old habits still told him grief should be private.

Grace sat beside Leo’s crib.

“You don’t have to hide it,” she said.

Adrian looked at her.

“My father believed crying made people weak.”

“Your father believed a lot of terrible things.”

A surprised laugh escaped him.

It was small.

Broken.

But real.

“Yes.”

Grace looked at Leo.

“You don’t have to keep inheriting his rules.”

Adrian was silent for a moment.

Then nodded.

“No.”

The door opened.

Camille entered.

Adrian’s face hardened immediately.

Grace stood.

“I should give you privacy.”

“No,” Adrian said.

Camille looked at Grace.

“Stay.”

Grace hesitated.

Camille continued.

“You’re already part of this whether any of us like it or not.”

Grace sat again.

Adrian crossed his arms.

“Explain the shares.”

Camille looked exhausted.

“Three years ago, Dad discovered I had copied the financial records.”

“We know that.”

“He threatened criminal charges.”

“For crimes he fabricated.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you fight?”

Camille looked at him.

“Because he threatened you too.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“He created documents showing your signature on several transfers.”

Adrian went still.

“I never signed transfers.”

“I know.”

“But a prosecutor wouldn’t know.”

Camille’s voice tightened.

“Dad said if I went public, he would make sure both of us were indicted.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You had already called me a liar.”

He flinched.

“I believed you hated me.”

“I did hate you.”

Her eyes filled.

“But I didn’t want you in prison for something you didn’t do.”

Grace watched them.

Three years of silence.

Three years of anger.

Built on a father’s manipulation.

Camille continued.

“Theodore offered a solution.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.”

“He bought the disputed block of shares through a private holding company. In return, Dad withdrew the allegations and let me leave.”

“How much?”

“Eight percent of Harrington Global.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Enough to matter.

Camille continued.

“I discovered later Theodore had already accumulated smaller positions through other entities.”

“How much does he control now?”

“With my shares?”

She swallowed.

“Just under twenty-seven percent.”

Adrian looked shocked.

Grace asked, “Is that enough to take the company?”

“Not alone,” Camille said.

“But with Leo’s Weston voting assets and enough pressure on Harrington board members…”

Adrian finished.

“He could control both families’ companies.”

Camille nodded.

Grace looked at Leo.

A sleeping baby at the center of an empire he did not understand.

“This is insane.”

Adrian’s voice turned bitter.

“It’s Tuesday in my family.”

Grace almost smiled.

Then Marcus entered.

Everyone looked at him.

“Theodore survived the boat fire.”

Grace’s heart sank.

“Where is he?”

“Gone.”

Adrian stared.

“How?”

“Marine unit recovered a jacket and blood from the water, but no body.”

Camille swore.

Marcus continued.

“We believe the explosion was staged.”

Grace looked at Adrian.

“The distraction.”

“Yes.”

“Theodore escaped while everyone focused on Leo.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Howard?”

“In custody.”

“Vivian?”

“Also.”

“Will they talk?”

“Vivian already is.”

Everyone froze.

Marcus placed a recorder on the table.

“She requested a deal.”

Grace’s anger rose.

“After pushing Leo into a pool?”

“She’s not walking away.”

Marcus’s expression remained hard.

“But prosecutors want Theodore more.”

Adrian looked toward his sleeping son.

“What did she say?”

Marcus pressed play.

Vivian’s recorded voice filled the room.

“I met Howard at a charity dinner eight months ago.”

An investigator asked, “Did he introduce you to Theodore Weston?”

“No. I met Theodore later.”

“What were you asked to do?”

“Get close to Adrian.”

“For what purpose?”

“Marriage.”

“And after marriage?”

Vivian hesitated.

“Convince him to change the trust.”

“How?”

“Howard said Adrian was lonely. He said Leo needed a mother and Adrian needed someone who understood his world.”

Grace looked at Adrian.

His eyes were fixed on the recorder.

Vivian continued.

“They gave me information.”

“What information?”

“Adrian’s favorite restaurants. His schedule. Claire’s perfume.”

Adrian went white.

Grace’s stomach turned.

Vivian had worn Claire’s perfume deliberately.

The investigator asked, “Did you know that?”

“At first, no.”

“When did you learn?”

“After the engagement.”

“And you stayed involved?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

No tears.

No excuses.

Just money.

“How much?”

“Five million if the trust changed.”

Grace closed her eyes.

“And if Adrian refused?”

“Howard said we would create evidence showing Grace was unstable and dangerous around Leo.”

“What was the purpose of removing Grace?”

“Leo trusted her.”

Vivian’s voice became quieter.

“Howard said as long as Grace was in the house, Leo would always reach for her first.”

Grace looked at the sleeping child.

The investigator continued.

“And the pool?”

“That was my idea.”

Adrian turned away.

Vivian spoke faster.

“I wasn’t trying to kill him.”

“You pushed his stroller toward water.”

“I knew Grace was close.”

“You then accused Grace.”

“I panicked.”

“No. Security footage shows you prepared the accusation immediately.”

Silence.

Then Vivian whispered, “I wanted Adrian to fire her.”

“Why that day?”

Another pause.

“Because Grace saw me.”

Grace frowned.

The investigator asked, “Saw you doing what?”

“Leaving Adrian’s study.”

“When?”

“The night before.”

Grace remembered.

She had gone downstairs at 2 a.m. because Leo needed a bottle.

A shadow near Adrian’s office.

Vivian had said she could not sleep.

Grace had believed her.

“What had you been doing in the study?”

“Copying Claire’s trust letter.”

Adrian turned sharply.

Marcus paused the recording.

“She saw Claire’s supplemental documents?”

“Yes.”

Grace’s heart pounded.

“What did she find?”

Marcus resumed.

Vivian’s voice returned.

“I found the name Margaret Miller.”

Grace froze.

“I searched the house employee database.”

The investigator asked, “And?”

“Grace Miller.”

Vivian breathed slowly.

“I called Howard.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me Grace could never learn why her mother was in Claire’s trust.”

Grace felt sick.

Theodore had not discovered her connection that afternoon.

Vivian and Howard had known before the pool.

The pool was not only about isolating Leo.

It was about removing Grace before she learned who she was.

The recording continued.

“What was Plan B?”

Vivian hesitated.

“Take Leo.”

“And then?”

“Force Adrian to sign.”

“And Grace?”

Another long silence.

Grace leaned closer.

“What about me?” she whispered.

Vivian finally answered.

“Howard said Grace would eventually lead them to Margaret’s evidence.”

The investigator asked, “Then what?”

Vivian’s voice dropped almost beyond hearing.

“They planned to make sure she never came back from the exchange.”

Grace went cold.

Adrian grabbed the recorder and shut it off.

“No more.”

His face was white with fury.

Marcus looked at Grace.

“That’s why Theodore ordered you to remain behind initially.”

Grace understood.

“They wanted to control when I came.”

“Yes.”

Camille sat beside her.

Grace could barely feel the chair beneath her.

Adrian began pacing.

“I brought her into my house.”

Nobody answered.

“I gave her keys.”

His voice rose.

“I gave her access to my son.”

Grace looked at him.

“Adrian.”

“I almost married her.”

“Adrian.”

“I hit you because of her lie.”

“Stop.”

He stopped.

Grace stood.

“You keep saying ‘because of her.’”

His face changed.

Grace continued.

“She lied.”

“Yes.”

“She manipulated you.”

“Yes.”

“She planned all of this.”

“Yes.”

“But your hand was yours.”

He went completely still.

Grace’s voice softened.

“If you want to become different from your father, you have to stop giving other people ownership of your worst choices.”

The room became silent.

Adrian looked at her for a long time.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.”

No defense.

No excuse.

Just acceptance.

Grace breathed out.

“Good.”

Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His expression sharpened.

“Howard wants to talk to Adrian.”

“No,” Grace said.

Marcus looked at her.

“He says he has Theodore’s location.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Then I’ll talk.”

The federal interrogation room was shown through secure video from the hospital.

Howard sat at a metal table.

His hands cuffed in front of him.

Still calm.

Still expensive.

Still dangerous.

Adrian appeared on the screen from a private conference room.

“What do you want?”

Howard smiled.

“You always were impatient.”

“Where is Theodore?”

“You resemble Richard when you’re angry.”

Adrian’s expression did not change.

“I’m not my father.”

Howard smiled wider.

“That remains to be seen.”

Grace watched from behind the camera.

Howard could not see her.

Adrian leaned closer.

“My son survived.”

“I know.”

“Your plan failed.”

“Did it?”

“Yes.”

Howard shook his head.

“Theodore did not need Leo to die.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“He needed you frightened.”

“For what?”

“To make you predictable.”

Howard looked directly into the camera.

“You have an emergency board meeting at nine this morning.”

Adrian froze.

Camille whispered, “No.”

Howard smiled.

“Theodore has called one.”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus was already checking his phone.

His face changed.

“It’s true.”

Adrian turned back.

“On what authority?”

Howard laughed.

“Twenty-seven percent ownership, four allied board members, and an emergency petition claiming your judgment has become unstable.”

Adrian stared.

“Based on what?”

Howard’s smile vanished.

“Yesterday you assaulted an employee.”

Grace felt the air leave the room.

Howard continued.

“Police documentation exists.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“You abandoned a major acquisition meeting.”

“My son nearly drowned.”

“You allowed your private residence to become the scene of a kidnapping.”

“My son was kidnapped.”

“Your security chief admitted to accepting bribes years ago.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Howard leaned back.

“Your fiancée has been arrested. Your sister is tied to disputed shares. Your employee is named in your dead wife’s trust.”

He smiled again.

“To a board of directors, Adrian, your life does not look tragic.”

He paused.

“It looks unstable.”

Camille whispered, “Theodore is trying to remove him as CEO.”

Howard heard nothing.

Adrian did.

“And if the board removes me?”

Howard answered calmly.

“Theodore proposes an interim executive chairman.”

“Who?”

Howard’s smile returned.

“You already know.”

Grace did.

They all did.

Theodore Weston.

Adrian looked at the clock.

8:14 a.m.

Forty-six minutes.

Howard leaned toward the camera.

“You spent all night trying to save one child.”

May you like

His eyes hardened.

“Now Theodore is going to take everything else.”
