Chapter 1

The second I walked through the front door, I saw my mother-in-law dumping an entire bucket of ice water over my five-year-old son while he screamed for me.
I had come home early from work because my last meeting in Nashville was canceled.
The house was strangely quiet when I pulled into the driveway.
Then I heard Noah crying.
“Please, Grandma! I won’t tell!”
I dropped my purse and ran toward the kitchen.
Diane was standing over my son with an empty metal bucket in her hands.
Noah was on the floor, soaked from head to toe, ice cubes scattered around his bare feet.
His little body was shaking.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Diane spun around.
Her face went pale.
“He needed discipline.”
I rushed to Noah and wrapped him in my coat.
His teeth were chattering.
“Mommy… I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
Diane stepped toward us.
“He was snooping where he didn’t belong.”
Noah suddenly pointed at her.
“I saw Grandma go into your bedroom.”
Diane’s expression changed instantly.
“Be quiet.”
I looked at my son.
“What did you see?”
“She opened your drawer.”
Diane grabbed his arm.
“I said shut your mouth!”
I knocked her hand away.
“Don’t touch my child.”
She shoved me hard in the shoulder.
I shoved her back.
Diane slapped me across the face.
For one second, I just stared at her.
Then I lunged at her.
We crashed into the dining table as she grabbed my hair and tried to force me backward.
I caught her wrists and pushed her away.
“You poured ice water on a five-year-old because he saw you stealing from me?”
“I wasn’t stealing anything!”
She grabbed my shirt and yanked me toward her.
I twisted free, and we stumbled into a chair hard enough to knock it over.
Noah screamed from behind me.
“Mommy, stop!”
Diane tried to get past me toward him.
I blocked her and shoved her back again.
“Stay away from my son!”
Her cardigan pocket caught on the edge of the table.
Something small fell onto the hardwood floor.
Diane froze.
So did I.
It was a black flash drive.
Noah pointed at it with a trembling finger.
“That’s it, Mommy.”
My stomach dropped.
“That’s what Grandma took from the secret drawer in your room.”
Diane suddenly lunged for the flash drive.
But I grabbed it first.
May you like
And when she saw it in my hand, she whispered the one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“If you open that, your husband will never forgive you.”
