Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried

The silence after Ethan’s question felt heavier than any argument I had ever had with Marcus.

Nobody moved.

Nobody coughed.

Nobody even whispered.

All eyes were on my ex-husband.

Marcus stood slowly, his hands shaking.

“Ethan, this isn’t the place.””

My son stared at him.

“You said that when Mom was crying in the kitchen.””

Marcus froze.

“You said that when you packed your bags.””

Another pause.

“You said that every time someone asked why Mom wasn’t invited to family events.””

The audience listened.

Some people looked uncomfortable.

Others looked angry.

I just stood there, trying to understand.

Because even after everything Marcus had done, a part of me still believed there were things I didn’t know.

Chloe stood up.

“Ethan, you’re upset. You’re emotional. This is your graduation day, and you’re turning it into a scene.””

Ethan looked at her.

“No, Chloe. I’m finally telling the truth.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand what happened between your father and me.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

A sad laugh.

“I understand more than you think.””

He reached into his folder again.

This time, he pulled out a printed document.

My eyes followed the paper.

“What is that?”” I asked.

Ethan walked toward me.

“Something I found three months ago.””

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

The first words made my hands go numb.

*College Tuition Payment Records*

My eyes scanned the page.

There were years of payments.

Thousands of dollars.

And next to each payment was a name.

Mine.

I looked at Ethan.

“I don’t understand.””

He swallowed.

“Mom, you always told me you didn’t pay for college because you couldn’t afford it.””

“I couldn’t,” I whispered.

“That’s what I thought too.””

He pointed at the paper.

“Then I found out you secretly used your retirement savings.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“I never told you that.””

“I know.””

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s why I was angry.””

I touched the paper.

“Angry?””

“I wasn’t angry at you.””

He looked toward Marcus and Chloe.

“I was angry because someone else took credit for your sacrifice.””

The room changed.

Suddenly, people weren’t looking at me as the abandoned woman standing near the exit.

They were looking at the person who had carried the weight silently.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Ethan, enough.””

My son turned.

“No.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You don’t know everything.””

Ethan nodded.

“You’re right.””

He lifted another paper.

“That’s why I checked.””

Chloe’s face became pale.

“What did you check?”” she asked.

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at me first.

“Mom, remember when you asked Dad why the college account was empty?””

A chill moved through me.

I remembered.

Two years earlier, I had called Marcus after receiving a letter from Ethan’s university.

The savings account we created together was gone.

Marcus told me there was a mistake.

He promised he would fix it.

I believed him.

Because after twenty-two years, I still wanted to believe the man I married wasn’t someone who could hurt us.

Ethan turned toward the audience.

“The money was transferred.””

The room held its breath.

“Not stolen,” Marcus said quickly.

Ethan looked at him.

“I didn’t say stolen.””

Marcus went quiet.

“The money was transferred,” Ethan repeated, “into an account connected to Chloe.””

A wave of shock moved through the auditorium.

Chloe shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“I have the bank records.””

“You hacked into private information?””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“I requested my own financial records because I needed proof.””

Marcus’s face lost color.

Chloe looked around.

She was searching for support.

But nobody moved.

Then Ethan said the words that made her completely freeze.

“And that’s not the only thing I found.””

Chloe stared at him.

“What else?””

Ethan looked at me.

Then back at her.

“The reason you wanted my mother in the back row wasn’t because you hated her.””

A pause.

“It was because you were afraid she would recognize someone sitting in this audience.””

My heartbeat quickened.

Someone?

Ethan looked toward the entrance doors.

And the doors slowly opened.

A man stepped inside.

A man I hadn’t seen in three years.

May you like

Marcus turned white.

Because he knew exactly who it was.
