Chapter 12: The Cousin Who Knew Too Much

Nobody moved.

Emily stood in the doorway.

Her eyes weren’t on me.

They weren’t on Dad.

They were on the key.

That was all I needed to see.

“You knew about this?””

Emily looked away.

“Not everything.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Then what did you know?””

She swallowed.

“I knew your mother left something.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Emily entered slowly and closed the door.

“Because she told my mother.””

Dad’s face changed.

“Your mother?””

Emily nodded.

“My mom knew about the trust.””

Madison looked confused.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell us?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Because everyone thought it would cause problems.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Problems?””

I held up the key.

“People destroyed my scholarship over this.””

Emily flinched.

“I know.””

The room went silent.

Dad looked at her.

“You know?””

She closed her eyes.

“I know who started it.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Who?””

Emily looked at me.

“I was hoping you’d never have to find out.””

“Find out what?””

She took a deep breath.

“The person who wanted your scholarship destroyed…”

She looked toward the hallway.

“…was your father’s closest friend.””

Dad froze.

“What?””

Emily nodded.

“Mark.””

The name meant something.

Dad’s old business partner.

Someone who had been at our house for years.

Someone who had brought gifts on holidays.

Someone who called me “kiddo.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Emily looked at Dad.

“Because he knew about the trust.””

Dad stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“He found out years ago.””

Dad looked angry.

“How?””

“Your mother told him.””

The room went silent.

Claire whispered:

“No…”

Emily nodded.

“She trusted him.””

Dad looked devastated.

“Why would he do this?””

Emily answered quietly.

“Because he believed the money should have gone to him.””

My hands tightened.

“He wanted my mother’s money?””

Emily nodded.

“He thought he deserved it.””

Dad sat down.

For the first time, he looked completely defeated.

“He was like family.””

Emily looked at him.

“That’s why it worked.””

The betrayal was deeper because it wasn’t from someone outside.

It was from someone who had been welcomed inside.

Dad grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling him.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at Emily.

“He knows you found out.””

“How?””

She looked nervous.

“Because I told him.””

Silence.

My eyes widened.

“You?””

Emily started crying.

“I made mistakes too.””

Madison stared at her.

“How many people were involved?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Too many.””

Dad’s voice became heavy.

“Why are you telling us now?””

Emily wiped her face.

“Because Mark crossed a line.””

“What line?””

She looked at me.

“He didn’t just want the trust fund.””

A chill moved through me.

“What else?””

Emily whispered:

“He wanted to make sure you never became the person your mother believed you could be.””

Before anyone could respond, Dad’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice came through.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Daniel.””

Dad froze.

Because he knew exactly who it was.

Mark.

The man who had been part of our family for years.

The man who had been hiding behind every lie.

Then Mark said:

“I know you found the key.””

Dad tightened his grip on the phone.

“How?””

A pause.

May you like

Then Mark laughed softly.

“Because I was the one who gave it to you.””
