Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of Brandon.

Not because of his father.

Because of the one possibility I refused to accept.

Someone close to me had betrayed us.

Someone who knew Sophia.

Someone who knew what the foundation meant.

The next morning, Emily arrived at my house.

She looked like she hadn’t slept either.

“I need you to hear this from me.””

I nodded.

“Who?””

She placed a file on the table.

I opened it.

And my heart sank.

The signature was familiar.

Too familiar.

Daniel Brooks.

My closest friend.

The man who had helped me build the foundation from nothing.

The man who had stood beside Sophia during every surgery.

The man who once told me:

“Your daughter is the reason this foundation exists.””

I stared at the signature.

“No.””

Emily stayed quiet.

I looked up.

“There has to be another explanation.””

“There might be.””

“Then find it.””

She nodded.

“I’m trying.””

Daniel arrived that afternoon.

He knew immediately why I called him.

He walked into my office and saw the documents.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“How long have you known?””

I asked.

He looked away.

“Michael…”

“How long?””

He sat down.

“I didn’t know everything.””

My hands tightened.

“That’s not an answer.””

He took a breath.

“Eleven years ago, when the accident happened, Whitmore Development offered a settlement.””

I stared at him.

“And you accepted it?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I rejected it.””

“Then why is your name on the report?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that says more than words.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Because they threatened us.””

I froze.

“Us?””

He looked toward the hallway.

Toward where Sophia was.

“They knew about the foundation. They knew about the research. They knew you would never stop.””

My voice lowered.

“So you helped them?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I tried to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By hiding the truth?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I was trying to buy time.””

“Eleven years?””

He had no answer.

Sophia appeared at the doorway.

“Uncle Daniel?””

Daniel immediately stood.

Her expression changed when she saw his face.

“What’s wrong?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel walked toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

Sophia looked confused.

“For what?””

He swallowed.

“For not telling the truth.””

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

“Did you know?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Her face fell.

Not because of the accident.

Because of the betrayal.

“You knew why I lost my leg?””

He nodded.

“I was trying to fix it.””

Sophia stepped back.

“But you didn’t tell me.””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then quietly said:

“I trusted you.””

Those three words broke him.

Later that evening, I reviewed everything Daniel had given us.

There were emails.

Payments.

Hidden meetings.

And one name appeared again and again.

Not Brandon.

Not his father.

Someone else.

Someone who had been controlling things from the shadows.

Someone who had been involved before Sophia ever entered that school.

I zoomed in on the document.

My blood went cold.

Because the person behind everything…

Was someone I knew.

Someone who had been publicly defending disabled children for years.

Someone everyone trusted.

Emily looked at me.

“Do you know him?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I did.

Very well.

And when I finally said his name, even Emily looked shocked.

“It’s impossible.””

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

I whispered.

“It’s worse than that.””

May you like

Because the person behind the cover-up…

Was the man who helped me create Sophia’s prosthetic leg.
