Chapter 13: The Name Above Vance
“Helen!””
Marcus shouted into the phone.
Nothing.
The call had ended.
Santos immediately turned to her colleague.
“Trace the emergency callback location. Contact local law enforcement.””
Vance stepped forward.
“You can't trace a private citizen without—”
“Be quiet, William.””
The voice came from Thomas Caldwell.
Not loud.
But furious.
Vance stared at him.
Caldwell had spent most of the morning looking shocked.
Now he looked betrayed.
“You knew Brennan was still alive.””
Vance shook his head.
“No.””
“You knew Phoenix existed.””
“No.””
“You nearly climbed over a security officer when Helen mentioned the master index.””
“That proves nothing.””
Caldwell stepped closer.
“It proves you're terrified.””
Vance laughed bitterly.
“You should be terrified too.””
Caldwell stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Vance's expression changed.
For the first time, Marcus saw something almost like satisfaction.
“You've been on this board for eighteen years.””
“So?””
“You think your name isn't somewhere in those records?””
Caldwell went pale.
“I never ordered a student record changed.””
“Maybe not.””
Vance smiled.
“But how many budgets did you approve?””
Caldwell said nothing.
“How many closed sessions did you attend?””
“Don't confuse ignorance with participation.””
“Try explaining that distinction when every camera in this auditorium is recording you.””
Marcus stepped toward the microphone.
“That's what you've been doing all morning.””
Vance turned.
“What?””
“Making everyone afraid of being exposed so they'll stop looking.””
The chairman's smile disappeared.
Marcus continued.
“You did it to Mr. Carter. You did it to my dad. You did it to Ethan.””
He looked around the auditorium.
“And now you're doing it to the board.””
Vance stared at him.
“You really think you're the smartest person in this room, don't you?””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I just think that's what scares you.””
Applause erupted.
Vance looked toward the exit.
Security didn't move.
Neither did he.
Santos's colleague hurried back.
“We have a location.””
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Her phone last connected to a tower near the district records annex.””
Dr. Hayes frowned.
“That building is closed on weekends.””
“Who has access?””
“District administration. Records staff.””
Vance immediately said, “And the superintendent.””
Everyone looked at Dr. Hayes.
She didn't flinch.
“Yes. Including me.””
Vance smiled.
“Interesting.””
Dr. Hayes took her district keycard from her pocket and handed it to Santos.
“Check every access log associated with me.””
The smile vanished from Vance's face.
Dr. Hayes added, “That's what cooperation looks like.””
Santos dispatched officers.
Then Claire called from the AV table.
“Dr. Hayes?””
“What?””
“The Phoenix folder changed.””
Santos moved immediately.
“I thought the computer was offline.””
“It is.””
Claire pointed at the screen.
“One file wasn't visible before.””
“How?””
“I think disconnecting the network interrupted a synchronization process. The local copy finished indexing.””
A new filename appeared.
MASTER_INDEX_ENCRYPTED.
Vance took a step backward.
Santos saw him.
“Sit down.””
“I need air.””
“Sit.””
He did.
David approached the computer but stopped several feet away.
“That file wasn't in my old archive.””
“Can it be opened?”” Marcus asked.
Santos shook her head.
“Not until forensic staff handles it.””
Marcus exhaled in frustration.
Then Ethan Cole spoke.
“Maybe you don't need to open it.””
Everyone turned.
He was still holding his mother's hand.
“When Brennan left Eastbrook, he gave me something.””
Vance's face tightened.
Ethan reached into his wallet.
He removed a worn business card.
On the back were twelve handwritten characters.
Letters.
Numbers.
Symbols.
“My mother thought it was his personal email password.””
Laura looked at him.
“You kept that?””
“I didn't know why.””
Ethan handed it to Santos.
“He told me, ‘If Eastbrook ever tries this again, find the bird that rises from ashes.’”
Phoenix.
Marcus felt chills.
Santos photographed the card.
“We still don't enter anything until forensic staff approves it.””
Claire suddenly leaned closer to the computer.
“There’s a password hint.””
“What does it say?””
She read it aloud.
THE SPEECH THEY NEVER HEARD.
Everyone looked at Ethan.
His mouth fell open.
“My speech?””
Laura immediately unfolded the old pages.
Ethan took them with trembling hands.
“I don't understand.””
Marcus walked beside him.
“Maybe there's something in it.””
They scanned the first page.
Nothing.
Second page.
Nothing.
Then Ethan stopped.
At the bottom of the final page was a handwritten sentence in red ink.
Not Ethan's handwriting.
Laura whispered, “I never noticed that.””
Ethan read it.
“When institutions fear the truth, records become memory.””
Below it were three numbers.
12-4-7.
Claire whispered, “A cipher?””
Santos nodded.
“Possibly.””
David looked at Ethan's speech.
“Twelve, four, seven could mean words.””
Ethan counted.
Twelfth paragraph.
Fourth sentence.
Seventh word.
He stopped.
“Crown.””
Marcus frowned.
“Crown?””
Vance stood.
“That's enough.””
Security immediately blocked him.
Caldwell stared at the chairman.
“Why does that word scare you?””
“It doesn't.””
Caldwell's eyes widened.
Then he whispered, “Crown Foundation.””
Dr. Hayes turned.
“What is that?””
“The private foundation that funded Eastbrook's expansion.””
Marcus looked toward Vance.
“Who runs it?””
Caldwell didn't answer.
“Mr. Caldwell?””
He slowly turned toward the reserved seats.
At the far end of the front row sat an elderly woman in a cream suit.
Marcus had barely noticed her all morning.
She had never stood.
Never shouted.
Never appeared shocked.
Even now, she sat perfectly still.
Caldwell's voice dropped.
“Margaret Crown.””
The woman rose.
Vance looked at her.
Not like a colleague.
Like an employee seeing his boss.
Margaret Crown walked toward the stage.
She was nearly seventy.
Elegant.
Calm.
Untouchable.
Or at least she believed she was.
“William,” she said quietly, “you've made an extraordinary mess.””
Vance swallowed.
Marcus stared at her.
“Are you the name above him?””
Margaret looked at Marcus for several seconds.
Then smiled.
“My dear boy.””
Angela immediately stepped forward.
“Don't call him that.””
Margaret ignored her.
“You've turned what should have been the happiest day of your young life into a public scandal.””
Marcus stared back.
“No.””
He pointed toward the microphone.
“I think somebody else did that.””
Margaret's smile faded.
Then Santos's phone rang.
She answered.
Everyone waited.
“Yes?””
Her expression sharpened.
“Is she safe?””
Marcus held his breath.
Santos listened.
Then looked directly at Margaret Crown.
“We found Helen Carter.””
Angela exhaled.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Alive.
But Santos wasn't finished.
“She wasn't alone.””
Margaret's composure finally cracked.
“Who was with her?”” Dr. Hayes asked.
Santos lowered the phone.
“A man carrying the original Phoenix archive.””
May you like
She looked toward Marcus.
“Dr. Brennan.””
