Chapter 1

The moment my mother-in-law poured an entire bottle of milk over my six-month-old son’s face because he wouldn’t stop crying, something inside me snapped. I slapped her before I even realized my hand had moved.
It happened on a Sunday afternoon at our house outside Chicago.
My husband, Ethan, had gone to pick up groceries.
I was upstairs changing the sheets when I heard my baby, Lucas, crying harder than usual.
Then I heard his grandmother, Margaret, say, “Stop it. Drink your milk.”
Lucas cried even louder.
I hurried downstairs.
Margaret was sitting on the couch with Lucas in her arms and a bottle in her hand.
“He won’t take it,” she said sharply.
“Give him to me,” I said.
She ignored me.
Lucas turned his face away from the bottle.
Margaret’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t be difficult.”
“He’s six months old,” I said. “He’s not being difficult.”
Then Lucas started screaming.
Margaret suddenly pulled the bottle away.
Before I could reach her, she tipped the entire bottle over his face.
Milk ran into his hair, down his cheeks, and across his little shirt.
Lucas gasped and began crying so hard his whole body shook.
I saw red.
I grabbed my son from her arms.
Then I slapped Margaret across the face.
The room went silent.
She stared at me like she couldn’t believe I had touched her.
“You hit me?”
“You poured milk on my baby!”
Margaret slapped me back so hard my head turned.
Lucas screamed against my chest.
My cheek burned.
“You ungrateful little woman,” she hissed. “This is my son’s house.”
I held Lucas tighter and stepped away from her.
“Touch me or my child again and you’re done.”
Margaret laughed.
Then she walked to the kitchen counter and picked up her phone.
“You think Ethan is going to choose you over his mother?”
I froze.
She tapped the screen and held it up.
A video was already playing.
It showed me slapping her.
But the part where she poured the milk on Lucas was missing.
My stomach dropped.
“You recorded this?”
Margaret smiled.
“No. The house did.”
Then the front door opened.
Ethan walked in with grocery bags and looked from my red cheek to his mother’s face.
Margaret immediately burst into tears.
“She attacked me.”
I opened my mouth to speak.
But before I could, Margaret held up the edited video and said, “Watch what your wife did to me.”

Ethan stared at the screen.
Then he looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
