happy

Chapter 1

The moment my five-year-old daughter looked up at me with orange juice dripping from her hair, the entire birthday table went silent—and my wife was still holding the empty glass.

It was supposed to be a happy Saturday afternoon at our house outside Dallas.

My daughter, Lily, had spent all morning helping me hang balloons for her grandmother’s birthday.

She was five, shy around adults, and still carried her stuffed bunny everywhere.

My wife, Vanessa, had been irritated with her since breakfast.

“Stop following your father everywhere,” she snapped when Lily climbed into my lap.

I told Vanessa to leave her alone.

She smiled tightly and said, “Of course.”

During lunch, Lily accidentally knocked over a napkin holder.

Vanessa slammed her fork down.

“Can you behave for five minutes?”

Lily froze.

“I’m sorry.”

My mother immediately said, “She’s a child, Vanessa.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

Then Lily reached across the table for a cupcake.

“Daddy said I could have one.”

Vanessa grabbed Lily’s wrist.

“I said no.”

Lily whimpered and tried to pull away.

I pushed my chair back.

“Take your hand off her.”

Vanessa released her, but instead of backing down, she grabbed the pitcher of orange juice.

Before anyone could react, she poured it directly over Lily’s head.

My daughter screamed.

Orange juice ran down her face, soaked her little dress, and dripped from the ears of her stuffed bunny.

Vanessa set the pitcher down.

“Maybe now she’ll finally learn to listen.”

I rushed across the room and pulled Lily into my arms.

She buried her wet face against my chest.

“Daddy, please don’t leave me with her.”

I handed Lily to my mother.

Then I turned around.

Vanessa barely had time to speak before I slapped her across the face.

Her head snapped sideways.

The entire table erupted.

Vanessa stared at me for one second, then screamed and shoved me hard in the chest.

“You hit me!”

“You just humiliated my daughter!”

She shoved me again.

I grabbed her wrists before she could swing at me.

“Get away from me!” she screamed, twisting violently.

Vanessa ripped one hand free and grabbed my shirt.

I caught her arm, and the two of us stumbled against the dining table.

Glasses tipped over.

Guests jumped backward.

My mother screamed for us to stop while Lily cried behind her.

Vanessa clawed at my shirt, trying to push past me toward Lily.

I blocked her.

“You are never touching my daughter again.”

Vanessa suddenly froze.

Then she looked toward Lily with a terrified expression.

“Ask her what she did first.”

The room went silent again.

I stared at my daughter.

Lily’s face went white.

My mother slowly reached into her purse.

“No,” she whispered. “Ask Vanessa what she’s been doing when you’re at work.”

Vanessa released my shirt.

For the first time all afternoon, she looked scared.

My mother pulled out her phone.

“I installed a camera three days ago.”

Vanessa lunged toward her.

“Give me that!”

But I grabbed the phone first.

May you like

I pressed play.

And the first thing I heard was Lily crying from somewhere dark while Vanessa’s voice said, “If you tell your father, you’ll stay down here all night.”
