Chapter 1

The moment I saw the stroller rolling toward the pool, I knew the baby’s stepmother had done it on purpose. What I didn’t know was that his billionaire father had come home early.

I had worked for Daniel Harrison’s family in Dallas for almost three years.

His eight-month-old son, Noah, was the sweetest baby I had ever cared for.

That afternoon, Daniel was supposed to be in New York until Friday.

His new wife, Vanessa, thought she had the entire estate to herself.

I was carrying folded towels through the glass doors when I heard Noah crying near the pool.

Vanessa stood behind his stroller with one hand on the handle.

“Noah needs some fresh air,” she said without looking at me.

Something in her voice made me stop.

The stroller was only a few feet from the water.

“Mrs. Harrison, the brakes aren’t locked,” I warned.

She looked down at me and smiled.

Then she gave the stroller one hard push.

“No!”

The stroller rolled straight over the pool’s edge.

I dropped everything and ran.

Noah disappeared beneath the water before I could reach him.

I jumped in fully dressed and grabbed the stroller with both hands.

My lungs burned as I fought the straps around his tiny body.

When I finally pulled him free, he was coughing and screaming.

I held him against my chest and cried harder than he did.

Then I heard a man shout behind me.

“What the hell happened?”

Daniel stood at the patio doors with his suitcase still in his hand.

Vanessa moved faster than I could speak.

“She pushed him!”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“She pushed Noah into the pool,” Vanessa screamed, pointing at me. “I tried to stop her!”

Daniel’s face went white.

I climbed out of the pool holding his son and shook my head.

“Sir, please. Check the cameras.”

Vanessa suddenly stopped crying.

For one second, her whole face changed.

Daniel noticed it too.

He took Noah from my arms and stormed inside to the security panel.

Vanessa followed him, begging him not to “waste time.”

The video loaded.

We all watched her put both hands on the stroller.

We all watched her look directly at the pool.

Then we watched her shove Noah into the water.

Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.

Vanessa backed away.

“Daniel, I can explain.”

He grabbed her by the hair and dragged her toward the patio while she screamed his name.

I ran after them, terrified he was about to do something he could never undo.

He stopped at the same pool where Noah had nearly died.

Then Vanessa looked at me and screamed one sentence that made Daniel freeze.

“Ask your precious maid who Noah’s real mother is!”
