Chapter 1

The moment I saw my mother-in-law dragging my three-year-old daughter toward the trash bins, I thought I was imagining it. Then she lifted my little girl and dropped her inside one.
It happened behind our suburban home outside Phoenix on a Saturday afternoon.
My husband, Michael, had gone to help his brother move.
I was in the laundry room when I heard Lily screaming.
“Mommy!”
I ran outside barefoot.
My mother-in-law, Diane, had Lily by the arm.
My daughter was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
“What are you doing?” I screamed.
Diane didn’t even look at me.
“She needs to learn what happens when she throws food on the floor.”
“She’s three!”
Lily reached both hands toward me.
“Mommy, please!”
I ran toward them.
But Diane dragged her to the large trash bin beside the garage.
Then she lifted Lily and put her inside.
My daughter screamed my name.
“Get her out!”
I grabbed Diane’s arm.
She shoved me away.
I begged her, “Please, that’s my baby.”
Diane turned and kicked me hard enough that I fell onto the driveway.
For a second, I couldn’t move.
Then I heard Lily crying from inside the bin.
Something inside me exploded.
I jumped back up.
Diane started to walk away like nothing had happened.
I grabbed her hair and spun her around.
Then I slapped her across the face.
She stared at me in shock.
“You touched me?”
“You put my daughter in the trash!”
I rushed to the bin and pulled Lily into my arms.
She buried her face against my neck.
Then Diane suddenly smiled.
“You just made the biggest mistake of your life.”
I looked at her.
She pointed toward the security camera above the garage.
“You think Michael is going to believe you after he sees you attacking his mother?”
My stomach dropped.

Then Lily lifted her head and whispered something that made Diane’s smile disappear.
“Mommy… Grandma does worse things when Daddy isn’t home.”
