Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Missing Years
I didn’t sleep that night.
How could I?
A few hours earlier, I had been worried about flowers, seating arrangements, and whether my makeup would survive my tears.
Now I was sitting on the floor of my bedroom, holding a photograph of a man I had never met.
A man who claimed he had spent eighteen years waiting for me.
The wedding dress was still hanging beside my closet.
White.
Beautiful.
A lie.
My phone sat in my hand, the last message glowing on the screen.
“Your mother wasn’t the only person who lied to you.””
I read it again.
And again.
Every time, the same question returned.
Who else?
David sat across from me, his hands folded together.
He looked exhausted.
Older.
For the first time, I noticed the gray hair near his temples that I had ignored for years.
“Emma,” he said quietly.
I looked up.
“You don’t have to answer him tonight.””
I almost laughed.
“Tonight is the only time I have.””
He looked toward the clock.
Three hours until sunrise.
Six hours until I was supposed to walk down the aisle.
“My whole life changed in one night.””
David nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
His expression didn’t change.
“You’re right.””
That made me feel worse.
“I’m sorry.””
“You don’t need to apologize for being hurt.””
I looked down at the photograph.
The young man in the picture looked happy.
He was holding a baby like the world had finally given him something precious.
I wondered how many times he had looked at that picture.
How many birthdays.
How many Christmas mornings.
How many moments he had missed.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, I opened it immediately.
“Meet me tomorrow after the wedding. Not before. There are things you need to hear from me in person.””
I stared at the words.
“Tomorrow after the wedding.””
I showed David.
He read it carefully.
“Do you want to meet him?””
I didn’t answer right away.
“I don’t know.””
That was the hardest truth.
I wanted to hate him for leaving.
But I had just learned he might not have left at all.
A knock came from the hallway.
My mother.
“Emma?””
I froze.
David stood.
“Do you want me to stay?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
The door opened slowly.
My mother stepped inside.
Her face was swollen from crying.
“I know you’re angry.””
I said nothing.
“I deserve that.””
Still nothing.
She walked closer.
“I was young.””
I looked at her.
“You were thirty.””
She stopped.
“I wasn’t a child.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You weren’t.””
“Then why did you make a decision that affected my entire life?””
She sat on the edge of the bed.
“Because I was terrified.””
“Of what?””
She looked at David.
Then back at me.
“Your father had money. His family had connections. I thought if he took you away from me, I would lose everything.””
I frowned.
“Take me away?””
“Yes.””
“Did he threaten you?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
“No.””
My stomach dropped.
“He never threatened you?””
She shook her head.
“He wanted shared custody.””
David closed his eyes.
Like hearing it again still hurt.
“He wanted to be your father,” my mother whispered.
I stared at her.
“Then why did you tell me he abandoned me?””
She began crying.
“Because after the court papers came, I panicked.””
“Court papers?””
David looked at me.
“What court papers?””
My mother went quiet.
I felt my heartbeat change.
“What?””
She looked away.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stood.
“What court papers?””
My mother wiped her face.
“Your father filed for custody.””
The room went silent.
“And?””
“He withdrew.””
I blinked.
“He gave up?””
“No.””
Her voice became barely audible.
“He didn’t.””
My blood ran cold.
“Then why did you say he did?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because I told him I would make sure you hated him if he kept fighting.””
David whispered:
“Linda.””
She looked at him.
“I was angry.””
“You destroyed a relationship between a father and daughter because you were angry.””
My mother covered her face.
“I know.””
I couldn’t look at her anymore.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the neighborhood was dark.
Quiet.
Everyone was sleeping.
Everyone except the three people whose lives had just shattered.
Then my phone rang.
Not a message.
A call.
I looked at the screen.
The name appeared.
A name I had never saved.
A name I had never seen before.
My biological father.
I answered.
Neither of us spoke for several seconds.
Then a man’s trembling voice came through.
“Emma?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
A deep breath.
Like he had waited eighteen years to say one word.
“My daughter…”
I felt my knees weaken.
Then he said something that made me sit down.
“Before you decide whether you want me in your life, there’s something you need to know about David.””
I looked across the room.
David was staring at me.
Confused.
Worried.
“What about David?”” I whispered.
My biological father was silent.

Then he said:
“He wasn’t just your stepfather.””
