Chapter 11: The Brother Behind The Curtain

The call ended.

But nobody moved.

Because my father had just spoken a name that should have belonged only to the past.

My uncle.

The man everyone believed was dead.

The man who had been controlling events from the shadows.

My father sat down slowly.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For us.

“How long have you known?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Six months.””

My anger returned.

“Six months?””

I stepped closer.

“You came back six months ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed away?””

“I was trying to find him.””

I shook my head.

“You should have found your family first.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But they were true.

My mother reached for my arm.

“Salvatore.””

“No, Mother.””

I looked at my father.

“I spent twelve years thinking you were dead.””

My father nodded.

“I deserve that.””

That answer stopped me.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t making excuses.

He was accepting the damage.

Then he opened a small folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Messages.

Names.

“He has been rebuilding power quietly.””

My eyes moved across the pages.

“Nolan?””

My father nodded.

“Hired.””

“Hattie?””

“Manipulated.””

“Victor?””

My father looked at him.

“Loyal.””

Victor looked away.

I still didn’t fully trust him.

But maybe I had been wrong about some things.

“What does my uncle want?””

My father looked at my mother.

“He wants what he believes was stolen from him.””

“The company?””

“No.””

A pause.

“The family.””

That answer confused me.

My father continued.

“Your uncle believed I destroyed his future. He believed Adelaide chose me and abandoned him.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“That was never true.””

“But he believed it.””

My father looked at me.

“And when people build their entire lives around resentment, they stop caring who gets hurt.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Ask your father why your uncle hated him.*

I showed it to him.

His expression changed.

“He knows we found the evidence.””

“Then he’s watching us.””

“Yes.””

The security alarm suddenly activated.

Again.

This time, the cameras showed something different.

A man standing outside the gate.

Older.

Holding a cane.

Not hiding.

Not running.

Waiting.

My father looked at the screen.

“That’s him.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“Adrian.””

The name felt strange.

My uncle.

Alive.

Standing outside.

My father walked toward the entrance.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I have to face him.””

“Not alone.””

For a moment, he looked at me like I was still a child.

Then his expression softened.

“You grew up.””

I nodded.

“Because I had to.””

The words hurt both of us.

We opened the door.

Adrian stood outside.

He looked nothing like the monster I expected.

He looked calm.

Almost gentle.

That made him more dangerous.

He smiled.

“Brother.””

My father stared at him.

“You should be dead.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“So should you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian looked at me.

“Salvatore.””

His smile widened.

“I have waited a long time to meet you.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

He tilted his head.

“Because I needed to see if your father created a son like himself.””

“And?””

Adrian looked toward my mother.

Then back at me.

“I’m disappointed.””

My hand tightened.

“Why?””

May you like

His smile disappeared.

“Because you still don’t know what your father did to our family.””
