Chapter 14: The Last Secret My Mother Left

I took the document home.

Not to my father’s house.

Not to the place where everyone had spent years hiding things.

To my mother’s room.

The room they tried to take from me.

The room that had held every secret waiting to be found.

I sat on the floor beneath the window.

The same place where my mother used to read to me.

Then I opened the final document.

My dear Nia,

I already knew I was going to cry before I finished the first sentence.

If you are reading this, then you know the truth about Samuel.

I looked at the photograph of my mother beside the bed.

She had known.

She had prepared for this.

I need you to understand something. Richard was not always a bad man.

I paused.

That was the hardest part.

Because I wanted villains.

I wanted one person to blame.

But life was never that simple.

Your father loved me. He loved you. But fear changed him.

I continued.

When Richard discovered Samuel was your biological father, he believed he was going to lose everything.

The next line made my heart ache.

He did not want to lose you.

I closed my eyes.

Even after everything, my mother still saw the humanity in him.

But wanting to keep someone and owning someone are not the same thing.

That was the sentence that broke me.

Because it explained everything.

The house.

The lies.

The control.

My father wasn’t protecting a family.

He was trying to prevent one from changing.

The letter continued.

Richard made choices that hurt me. Diane helped him. Samuel waited too long to return. My mother made a terrible decision because she was afraid.

Everyone had failed.

Everyone.

But one person still had to answer.

I found the final pages.

There is one thing you need to know about your treatment.

My heart stopped.

The delay was not what killed me.

I stared.

My cancer had already progressed. The delay hurt me, but it was not the reason I died.

A tear fell.

My mother wasn’t leaving me revenge.

She was leaving me the truth.

The reason I am telling you this is because I do not want you to spend your life carrying hatred.

I covered my mouth.

That was my mother.

Even dying, she was worried about my heart.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

The person who caused the delay needs to face consequences. But you do not.

I looked at the signature.

Love always, Mom.

I sat there for a long time.

Until someone knocked.

I looked up.

My father stood in the doorway.

For once, he didn’t look angry.

He looked broken.

“Can I come in?””

I almost said no.

But I moved aside.

He entered slowly.

His eyes moved around the room.

“It still looks like her.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I never should have let Diane change anything.””

I didn’t answer.

He sat in the chair by the window.

The same chair my mother loved.

“I know you hate me.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

That was the truth.

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“I need to tell you something.””

I waited.

“When I found out Samuel was your biological father, I was angry.””

I said nothing.

“I felt like my entire life was a lie.””

He looked at his hands.

“But then I realized something.””

“What?””

“You were never a lie.””

My throat tightened.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””

I looked away.

Because I wanted to believe him.

And I hated that I still did.

“Why did you hide everything?””

He whispered:

“Because I was afraid you would leave me.””

I looked at him.

“You pushed me away first.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

A long silence followed.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Evelyn.

I opened it.

My blood went cold.

*Nia, I found the missing hospital security footage.*

I looked at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*The person who entered your mother’s records wasn’t Richard.*

I froze.

A third message came.

*It was someone else. Someone who had access after her death.*

I looked at my father.

He saw my face.

“What happened?””

I stood.

Because suddenly I understood.

The story wasn’t ending.

It was changing.

May you like

And the person who had been hiding the final secret…

Was still out there.
