Chapter 13: The Truth Mr. Ellis Hid
“I was there.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
Daniel stared at his father like he had never seen him before.
For twenty-three years, he had searched for answers.
For twenty-three years, he had believed Richard Mitchell was the reason his family was broken.
And now the one person he trusted most had admitted he was there the night everything changed.
“Dad…”
Mr. Ellis looked down.
“I knew this day would come.””
Daniel’s voice trembled.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Mr. Ellis didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Daniel stepped back.
“Why?””
Mr. Ellis looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer seemed impossible.
This was the man who stood against Richard Mitchell in front of the entire school.
The man who exposed corruption after decades of silence.
But now he looked like someone who had been defeated by his own memories.
“What happened that night?”” Daniel asked.
Mr. Ellis sat down slowly.
“Martha discovered everything.””
He looked at the old letter.
“She found proof that Richard had stolen money from the scholarship fund. She found proof that he had manipulated school records.””
He took a breath.
“But she also found something else.””
“What?””
Mr. Ellis looked at Daniel.
“She found out Richard was planning to take over my entire company.””
Daniel shook his head.
“But why would that make Mom disappear?””
Mr. Ellis closed his eyes.
“Because she confronted him.””
The room became silent.
“She told Richard she would expose him.””
I listened carefully.
“What happened next?””
Mr. Ellis’s hands tightened.
“She called me that night.””
Daniel froze.
“She said she was meeting Richard to get the final documents.””
“You let her go?””
The pain in Daniel’s voice was impossible to ignore.
Mr. Ellis looked at him.
“I tried to stop her.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
A tear moved down Mr. Ellis’s face.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
He looked at the floor.
“I thought I could meet them, get the documents, and bring her home.””
Daniel whispered:
“And?””
“I arrived too late.””
Nobody spoke.
“The meeting place was empty.””
Mr. Ellis’s voice became softer.
“Martha was gone.””
Daniel looked away.
“So you knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Mr. Ellis looked destroyed.
“I was told not to.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“By who?””
Mr. Ellis looked toward the door.
“Richard.””
The principal lowered his head.
I felt my stomach twist.
“What did he threaten you with?””
Mr. Ellis looked at me.
“He told me if I went to the police, he would destroy the evidence and make sure Daniel was taken away from me.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“He threatened to take me?””
Mr. Ellis nodded.
“He had money. Lawyers. Connections.””
Daniel looked angry.
“But you still should have told me.””
“I know.””
The words were barely audible.
“I know.””
For the first time, Mr. Ellis looked like a father who had failed his son.
Not because he didn’t love him.
Because fear had made his choices.
Daniel walked toward the window.
“I spent my entire life thinking you abandoned me.””
“I never did.””
“But you let me believe it.””
Mr. Ellis had no answer.
Because it was true.
The principal quietly stepped forward.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He pulled another document from his folder.
“This was found with Martha’s letter.””
Mr. Ellis took it.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then he stood suddenly.
“No.””
“What is it?”” Daniel asked.
Mr. Ellis looked at him.
“It’s proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Mr. Ellis turned the page.
“Proof that your mother survived that night.””
Nobody moved.
The sentence didn’t make sense.
“Survived?””
The principal nodded.
“Martha wasn’t killed.””
Daniel stared.
“Then where was she?””
Mr. Ellis looked at the document again.
And for the first time in twenty-three years…
Hope appeared on his face.
“She was looking for a way back.””
A notification appeared on my phone.
Another unknown message.
But this time, it wasn’t from Richard.
It was a location.
May you like
And three words.
*She is alive.*
