Chapter 13: The Man Who Came Back From The Dead
I stared through the warehouse window.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The man standing beside the black sedan was impossible.
A person who belonged in the past.
A person I had mourned.
A person I had buried.
“Ryan,” Daniel whispered.
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“You know him?””
I didn’t answer.
Because saying his name out loud would make it real.
The man outside stepped closer to the warehouse.
The same slow walk.
The same posture.
The same familiar face.
My hands started shaking.
“That’s…”
Daniel looked at me.
“Who?””
I swallowed.
“That’s my uncle.””
Silence.
Victor had told me my family was full of secrets.
I just never imagined one of those secrets would be standing alive ten feet away.
Michael’s expression changed.
“Your uncle?””
I nodded.
“Ethan Carter.””
The man who had been my father’s younger brother.
The man who supposedly died in a car accident when I was twelve.
The man whose funeral I attended.
The man my father never wanted to talk about afterward.
Daniel moved closer.
“Your uncle was involved?””
“I don’t know.””
But deep down, I knew.
Because my father’s final warning suddenly made sense.
*Trust no one.*
The warehouse door opened.
Ethan stepped inside.
He looked older.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But he was alive.
“Ryan.””
Hearing my name from his mouth felt wrong.
Like a voice from a nightmare.
I stepped back.
“You’re dead.””
Ethan gave a sad smile.
“I was supposed to be.””
Michael immediately moved between us.
“You need to leave.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Still protecting Robert’s son?””
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Still destroying everything he loved?””
The tension between them was immediate.
They knew each other.
Not casually.
Deeply.
I looked at Ethan.
“You were part of this.””
He sighed.
“I was part of trying to stop it.””
I laughed.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Ethan looked around the warehouse.
Then at Daniel.
“So he finally found you.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“You knew about him?””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
My anger rose.
“Of course you did.””
I stepped forward.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I closed my eyes.
Again.
Another promise.
Another secret.
“What happened to you?””
Ethan looked away.
“The accident wasn’t an accident.””
The room went still.
“What?””
“Someone tried to kill me.””
“Who?””
He looked at Michael.
Michael looked away.
That was enough.
My head started spinning.
“How many people were involved?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“Your father left this with me.””
Daniel stared.
“Another secret?””
Ethan nodded.
“His last one.””
I didn’t take it.
“Why now?””
“Because they found Daniel.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
“The people who started all of this.””
A sound came from outside.
Several cars.
Not one.
Several.
Michael cursed under his breath.
“They followed us.””
Ethan looked at me.
“You need to listen carefully.””
I didn’t trust him.
But I listened.
“Your father wasn’t trying to protect money.””
“Then what?””
“He was trying to protect evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Evidence that your family was destroyed because someone wanted control of a company, a fortune, and a name.””
I frowned.
“What name?””
Ethan’s eyes darkened.
“Carter.””
The warehouse lights suddenly shut off.
Someone had cut the power.
Then a voice came from outside.
“Ryan.””
Everyone froze.
Because the voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t an enemy.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Michael whispered:
“No.””
May you like
The warehouse door opened.
And Diane stepped inside.
